the name game

so for whatever reason, my mind started wandering during the sermon yesterday. not to anything bad. i just started trying to recall my great-grandparents' names (on my dad's side, i don't know hardly anything about my mom's side). i remembered that my Gram's parents were Francis & Helen. and Gramp's mother was Amelia. for the life of me, i can't recall his father's name though. i am hoping my brother remembers or this is going to drive me insane. i know that i know it but it just won't surface, and that's not something i want to lose.

i also remembered that my Gram was one of six kids, and Gramp was one of nine. so this morning, while i was getting ready for work, i was trying to remember all of *their* names.

Gram's family was Mildred (that was my Gram), Elsie, Paul, Arthur, Frederick and Ernest.
Gramp's family was Walter (that's Gramp), William, Margaret, Emma, Esther, Wanda, Martha, Olga and Bertha.

how are those for some good old German names? ;-) i realize no one really cares about any of this but i wanted it written down somewhere so... there ya go.

so anyway this morning, Stacy had this little quiz posted on her blog with the "hidden meaning" of her name, so i decided to play along.

What Dawn Means

You are balanced, orderly, and organized. You like your ducks in a row.
You are powerful and competent, especially in the workplace.

People can see you as stubborn and headstrong. You definitely have a dominant personality.

You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection.
You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.
You have the classic "Type A" personality.

You are very charming... dangerously so. You have the potential to break a lot of hearts.
You know what you want, how to get it, and that you will get it.
You have the power to rule the world. Let's hope you're a benevolent dictator!

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.
You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts.
You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.

interesting. that first part is right. i am definitely organized & orderly. and i do like my ducks in a row. i don't know about powerful, but i do like to think that i am competent.

i suppose that i could be considered stubborn & headstrong at times. dominant personality though? not so much. at least not from my perspective.

that next section is way off, in my opinion. i'm certainly not the best at much of anything, and i am neither authoritative nor aggressive. and i am *not* a Type A; i think my personality is far more the patient, relaxed, easy-going Type B. i waver in confidence. about the only thing i do agree with there is that i try to strive for perfection, even if i don't actually reach it.

that next section? about being charming? breaking hearts? knowing what i want & how to get it? being a dictator? *that* was worth a good laugh. =P

the last part, though, is so me. the good & the bad. i definitely think too much sometimes. my past has the power to make me a little paranoid or jealous if i listen to my thoughts for too long. but i know that i am very intuitive, which i think is a by-product of being quiet & observant.

hmmmm... benevolent dictator, huh? ::gleam in her eye::

13 with their own thoughts:

Well, I for one, really enjoyed reading those names. I just love old-fashioned names. We named our munchkins using family names. Of course, and much as I adored my beautiful grandma, I just couldn't name my daughter after her (Ethel Viola!).

Debi: I couldn't name a daughter after my Gram either (Mildred Florence) but I have toyed with the possibility of perhaps Lauren, as a spinoff of Florence. My favorite girl name is Emma though, which is a family name!

Ahh... thanks for the fix, benevolent dictator. ;-)

I like the name Elsie... hmmm

Here's mine:

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.
You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts.
You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited... which can be a good or bad thing.
You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long.
You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

You are very open. You communicate well, and you connect with other people easily.
You are a naturally creative person. Ideas just flow from your mind.
A true chameleon, you are many things at different points in your life. You are very adaptable.

You are truly an original person. You have amazing ideas, and the power to carry them out.
Success comes rather easily for you... especially in business and academia.
Some people find you to be selfish and a bit overbearing. You're a strong person.

You are well rounded, with a complete perspective on life.
You are solid and dependable. You are loyal, and people can count on you.
At times, you can be a bit too serious. You tend to put too much pressure on yourself.

You are relaxed, chill, and very likely to go with the flow.
You are light hearted and accepting. You don't get worked up easily.
Well adjusted and incredibly happy, many people wonder what your secret to life is.

You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone.
You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together.
At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together.

Question: How can I be wound up and laid back all at the same time??

Hey, how bout those Pats?!! My hubby was thrilled.

I forgot to do this quiz on Stacy's blog. Maybe today.

Just got through shoveling a foot of snow!

Ted D Monday, January 14, 2008 6:16:00 PM

Dawn, I do the same thing in church sometimes, LOL! Except mine is usually wondering why Francona pulled Daisuke that early or wondering when Timlin is coming off the dl, etc..

Nice to know I'm not alone, even though I feel bad about it.

Debi Monday, January 14, 2008 6:39:00 PM

Oooh, I like both Lauren and Emma! Elsie is another pretty one. But you will stay away from Bertha, I hope!

And though, quite understandably, we didn't use Ethel or Viola, we did use my beloved grandma's maiden name. (That's where Gray came from.)

~**Dawn**~ Monday, January 14, 2008 10:03:00 PM

Nichole: Elsie is a good name. My Gram & her sister were best friends. My Aunt El was one of the sweetest ladies ever. As for how you can be wound up & laid back at the same time... you got me. =P

mamichelle: Two more games to go!!

Ted: I feel bad too... and it's always when the associate pastor preaches. When it's the senior pastor, I pay attention just fine.

Debi: No Bertha. Or Martha, Olga or Wanda. ;-) Ya know... I think the only thing we're missing is an Ethel! I can't even use Gram's maiden name -- Malsheske.

I used my real name and it came back with a very strong type A personality description. Which is totally not me, it was a pretty accurate description of what I am NOT. Like you I am easily a type B personality. Actually Nicholes' description posted above describes me much better than mine did. Maybe I should have used my blogger name.

Scott: I guess that's what you get when you play with a goofy online quiz. =P I have the organization characteristics of a Type A but I have way too much patience & flexibility to be anything but Type B. Except for when it comes to my sports teams. ;-)

I followed the link. It was fun. But I think it could relate to anybody really =)

Janet Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:05:00 PM

I looked up my name and it just SO didn't sound like me LMAO!

I composed your anthem, you know, O Benevolent Dictator. Please do not forget that when you are doling out titles and honours...
