June 27 - “Children are our Future” – show me that quote in a picture.


this photo was taken when i was up in Connecticut three weeks ago for Baby Girl's birthday. (i say Baby Girl, but just look at her on my lap! no more baby!) i look at this photo of us though, and i can't help but see that those kids are our future, our legacy. they are themselves and yet us, carried forward. pieces of us, both genetically and emotionally. those five beautiful children (plus the two not pictured -- Gosia's son Seamus and her upcoming December arrival) make the future look promising and bright. and maybe someday i will get the opportunity to contribute my own piece of it...

Stuff Portrait Friday: June 11, 2008

yes, i know i am late. but when you see the assignment, you'll see why i couldn't actually "take" the photos until Saturday. (that doesn't really provide an excuse for why i took til today to actually post them, but... ::shrugs::)

the instructions:
June 6: Through the eyes of a child.
If you have a child; Allow the child to take your camera and find something they like to take a picture of. Do not prompt them on what to take, leave them to themselves to pick it.
If you do NOT have a child…you lucky bastards; Get down on your stomach or knees, about the height of child or baby and see what you see from there point of view.

now i do not have a child but i did have the opportunity this past weekend to borrow a child! plus, Baby Girl loved participating. =) that's right. i placed my camera into the hands of a not-quite-four-year-old (well, sort of. i did keep it cupped in my hand for stability but she looked through the viewfinder & pushed all the buttons!). there are some privileges to being the god child, you know. plus i love that i instilled the seeds of the photography bug! she asked several more times to take photos over the course of the weekend! (of course her mom might kill me if she helps herself to the family camera now... hopefully its tucked away somewhere safe!)

without further ado, i present to you:

the first one was a little... experimental. ;-) it's tough to explain all the steps to taking a photo to a preschooler! LOL! this was an attempt to photograph Daddy. as you can see, there is no Daddy in this photo. actually... maybe you *can't* really see.

ok. here's some progress. we're in focus. and there is *some* Daddy. at least we're looking in the right direction now! preschoolers can't close one eye & just look through the viewfinder so it's challenging to explain that you need to see Daddy in "the little window" when you can still see him with your other eye.

almost there... "can we try again, Auntie Dawn?" she asked. of course! we do not argue with the photography muse. she knew what she wanted & that wasn't it!

success!! a photo of Daddy! and a very excited little photographer. =)


by the way? when almost-four-year-olds take "artistic photography" and see the results in the review window? they find it *hysterical*.

Who’s your hero? What is symbolic of a hero? What does Hero mean to you? What does it look like?



i couldn't take my photo for "hero" myself. i had to scan one in that i already had.

i don't know exactly how i would define 'hero' but i know heroes give of themselves, at a cost, for the benefit of others. and i know that we look up to heroes for those sacrifices. and i know that heroes are often so much more than we even see or realize or acknowledge, because we can't, because they don't broadcast it, because they do without expecting accolades.

that photo says 'hero' in many ways to me. some less obvious than others. i mean that young man there put on a uniform for his country & served his Uncle Sam. and to this day won't talk about much of it. based on the few stories i have heard, and what history i have read, i can't say as though i blame him. that young man in a uniform is a hero for his country.

that young man also grew up to be my father. a single father of two. in a time when fathers were not often the ones awarded custody of small children. a father who sacrificed so much -- and probably so much more than i will ever know -- for his kids.

it's back! it's back! for our first week back, Kristine claimed to "go easy on us": show us your favorite photo. ha! that is not easy at *all*. i cannot pick a favorite! so... i picked one of the many...



why is it a favorite? i love the angle, looking up. i love that it's not your usual view of Cinderella Castle. i love that it's at twilight. i love the colors. i love that there are no people in it. i love that it looks completely peaceful, which is often difficult to achieve, literally, at the center of Magic Kingdom.

Wrapped, unwrapped. Show off your favorite present without looking snobby! Show off some incredible gift-wrapping skills. Show off that Shaun autographed glossy 8×10 (for those off you smart enough to order before the holiday rush). Whatever. Pick a gift. If you’re not religious, buy Kristine something and take a picture of it. I’ll make sure it reaches the closet unless it’s Stripper Cookies.

1. One decoration. - i don't have a tree this year so my decorations are the "stand alone" variety. this snowman is one of my favorite decorations.


2. One gift. - unwrapped. i don't want to have wrap it & make it look pretty just to have the *unwrap* it for airport security. hmmmm... i wonder what this could be... 0=)


3. Something stuffed in a stocking - there are some tiny fragile wrapped tree ornaments stuffed into these stockings for safe keeping. that's all that will be stuffed into these this year though... my stocking collection is on vacation.

Hey Kristine - loved the shout out to Breast Cancer Awareness this week. I totally have a theme for you for sometime in November! I’ll be blogging about it more next Wednesday, but November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month (You know, that crappy monster that has a hold of my little girl!)

Anyway, you can totally say I suggested this so it won’t seem so inappropriate or distasteful (LOL) but I was thinking of this…
