now where were we...
i didn't get to see the Sox games on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, since i was busy playing at WDW with my friends, but we did get to check up on the score & play-by-play thanks to Daniel's Blackberry. here's my recap in a nutshell before we get to last night's game.
Thursday: it would appear that it did not matter that the Jays left the dome open, because the Sox brought bats & Wakey brought his flutterball & the Sox won 8-0. then Roy Halladay came down with appendicitis & now he will be out for four to six weeks.
Friday: Julian faced a guy from Baltimore who i never heard of. Sox thought it would be a good idea to strand 13 batters on base. Julian collects another loss, Orioles 6 Sox 3. i blame this partially on the fact that i did not wear any Sox shirt at all on Friday, let alone the lucky Trot jersey that seems to bring Julian good luck.
Saturday: not sure what happened to Schill, but i was stunned to learn that Javier Lopez got the win, considering last i heard, he was pitching relief in Pawtucket. apparently, Devern Hansack was not getting enough work in Boston, what with our starters going deep into games so consistently, so Tito wanted him optioned to the PawSox to keep giving him opportunities. Lopez rode the shuttle back to Boston (he's probably used to this after last year) & got the win in a 13-4 victory over Baltimore, and from what we could tell it was not a short game!
Sunday: Joshy got his first no-decision of 2007. so much for breaking the record by going 9-0 in nine starts but he's still undefeated. he's got an owie on his finger though & we don't know yet if he'll get his next start or not. maybe we will be getting a little Jon Lester preview sooner than we thought? hmmm...
and without rubbing anything in too much for Bart or J, let's just say that as Daniel was giving us the eighth inning play-by-play of Sunday's game while we sat at the airport, things were looking mighty grim, with the Orioles up 5-0. and then i happened to catch the final score on a tv showing NESN in one of the sports bars before he could get to the ninth & i just about fell over. that 6-5 win was quite a gift win for the Sox is all i can say...
and now for last night:
photos from Yahoo! Sports
1. i am woman enough to admit that the Sox were the beneficiary of a bad call last night. Julio Lugo was most definitely out trying to steal 2B in the first inning. and i am not just saying that because it's Lugo.
2. the first thing i thought of when they said the air was still was that it was too bad Wakey wasn't pitching last night. according to the weather the last time i checked, there are 16mph winds in Boston today. let's just hope it doesn't rain.
3. they were the Tough Luck Tigers last night. it seems just about every possible bad call or weird hop went against Detroit last night.
4. that was some diving catch by Curtis Granderson. he's no Coco but that was still nicely executed.
5. with the King of Doubles busy sending balls out of the park, the Greek God of Walks seems to be handling the doubles nicely. that leaves JD Drew to cover walks, which is certainly better than the outs he's been making lately.
6. the luck evened out a little in the sixth. they called Youk out on batter interference, which i feel was a bogus call. how can he be interfering if he's mid-swing?! and then he lost his balance at the end of the swing & couldn't get out of the way quickly enough but i still don't see how that was interference.
7. Pedroia Pocket may be wee but he sure is showing up to play defense in a BIG way. he's giving Coco a run for his money with all the diving plays.
8. 124 pitches. Matsuzaka pitched his first complete game of 2007. you could see the satisfaction on his face. Remy & Don were talking about how the Sox had only three complete games in 2006, as opposed to the 57 they had one year when RemDawg was playing for Boston, and the 79 complete games they had in 1946. they're right: the art of the complete game has all but vanished.
9. ninth inning. Ordonez Kd. Don said he was Dice-Kd. i may not like Dice-K as a nickname for our hundred million dollar pitcher, but Dice-K as a verb? *love* it.
10. 7-1 Sox win. that's seven runs without a single homer. they won the game playing small ball last night.
11. Wakefield is on the hill for the Sox tonight. his .179 ERA is the AL best. let's hope the love the bats had last Thursday was for Wakey & not for hitting in Toronto.
