Right Now: June 15, 2010

Outside my window... it's hot. And humid. And hot. Also? There are humongous mosquitoes.

I am thinking... that whoever created Zicam Oral Mist should be given awards & accolades.

I am thankful for... quiet evenings at home.

From the kitchen... come surprises this week. There was no menu planned. There was a lesson learned though: I hate having to think about what's for dinner on short notice.

I am wearing... green capri cargo pants & my big comfy Pedroia stars & stripes Sox t-shirt. I do not match & I do not care.

I am creating... a mountain of tissues because my nose keeps running. I don't feel bad at all though, so I am not complaining.

I am going... to bed early tonight.

I am reading... Deep Drive: A Long Journey to Finding the Champion Within by Mike Lowell with Rob Bradford. I read all but the last half of the final chapter & the epilogue while waiting at the airport & then flying home. Could not stop turning the pages.

I am hoping... the Zicam keeps working.

I am hearing... the end of the baseball game. Man, I missed my Sox this weekend.

Around the house... there are small messes to be tamed. This is why I clean *before* I travel. Because I come home & make messes while I unpack, but the mess is that much smaller since it was clean to begin.

One of my favorite things... laughing with friends.

A few plans for the rest of the week... kick the rest of this (can't even really call it a) cold to the curb, get my hair cut & highlighted which it has needed badly for over a week now, and go out to dinner Friday before watching the Sox game from my usual perch on the couch.

A picture to share... of the not-quite-three-year-old who seriously blew my mind this weekend with how well he can hit. Not just off a tee, but with someone tossing underhand to him. And not little taps but home runs & line drives & grounders. In all directions. And? He switch hits. I kid you not. I'm going to inform Theo that he needs to draft the boy right now. He's going to be the Second Coming of Pedey's Laser Show. Mark my words.

Memory Lane: June 10, 2010

Four years ago today, my brother married my sister-in-law.

Six days ago, they brought a new little life into their family. Just in case there was any doubt that this is my brother's boy (there isn't, but for argument's sake), Memory Lane presents, my brother on the right at a month old, and his son on left.

I Want Wednesday: June 9, 2010

**I Want to see the Main Street Electrical Parade and the Summer Nightastic! Fireworks Spectacular, now showing at Magic Kingdom.

**I Want this pitcher.

**I think this is the coolest thing ever for storing sugar & I Want it.

**While I'm at it, I Want a new canister to store my flour container too.

**You see that little triangle of white tank top showing behind the pink polo?

I Want to know how it is possible that I got a glob of yogurt to land perfectly perched there in that little space yet I lack the coordination to walk without stumbling or not drop my phone on the ground most days.

**I Want to snuggle this little cuddle bug.

Right Now: June 8, 2010

Outside my window... it's hot & humid. There are some low rumbles of thunder, but no rain.

I am thinking... that I have so much to do & so little motivation to make it happen.

I am thankful for... the safe arrival of my nephew this past Friday night.

From the kitchen... comes meals that require little to no cooking. It's too hot to turn on appliances that generate heat. It's too hot to eat anything hot. Heck, it might actually be too hot to eat. Unless you mean ice cream.

I am wearing... capri pj pants & a tank top.

I am creating... excuses for not getting anything done tonight.

I am going... to bed soon. See? Another excuse.

I am reading... an old issue of Redbook magazine that I didn't get to before.

I am hoping... I make it through the rest of the week.

I am hearing... the steady hum of the air conditioner.

Around the house... are piles that I am avoiding. I will regret this eventually. Like Thursday, when I am preparing to travel. I cannot leave a messy home behind me.

One of my favorite things... is sharp cheddar cheese.

A few plans for the rest of the week... cleaning, packing, flying, celebrating the anniversary of my god daughter's birth, seeing my Connecticut girlies & a whirlwind of other activities associated with being there for a quick couple of days.

A picture to share... of my sweet new nephew.

20 Questions: June 6, 2010

1. What do you think of chivalry?
I love it. I don't mind have doors opened for me or any other gentlemanly act bestowed upon me. Sure, I can do those things for myself, but it's awfully nice to have it done for you.

2. Silver or gold?
I prefer silver-tone, though gold looks better on me, I suppose.

3. What color are your sheets?
My cotton ones are white. My flannel ones are tan.

4. When did you last complain about the weather?
Only all day. It's hot, humid & not a breath of a breeze. It is positively stifling out there.

5. When is the last time you watched fireworks?
May 15, at EPCOT.

6. Name 5 things in your pantry.
Rice. Cream of celery soup. Fruit cups. Bottled water. Cupcake liners.

7. What are your favorite nuts?
Nichole. LFM. Heather. Alison... Oh! OH!! You mean *nuts*! Cashews.

8. What is your favorite "family-friendly" curse word?
Rats. And yes, I do actually use it.

9. What's the best thing about Mondays?
When they give you a three-day weekend.

10. What was the last thing you broke?
It's been a while. I can recall breaking something, but can no longer recall what exactly it was...

11. How often do you use a calculator?
At least once a day. I hate numbers. They are evil.

12. What is your favorite sports movie?
Oh boy... So many good ones. "Major League." "Field of Dreams." "The Cutting Edge." I think I will have to go with "Fever Pitch" though. (You saw that coming, didn't you.)

13. What did you do ten years ago that you do not now?
Ten years ago... 23 years old... ::going back in the Way Back When Machine:: Ok, got it! I do not allow another (no-authority-figure) adult tell me what to do. I demand the same respect I give.

14. When did you last have champagne?
BUBBLES! It's been a while. Nichole's birthday, I think?

15. What was your favorite subject in high school?
Anything to with the English (after freshman year, did NOT like my freshman English class).

16. Where do you store your photos?
On my hard drive. On my external hard drive. On Picasa.

17. What is the best part of traveling?
Getting to see people you miss or new sights at the other end.

18. How do you measure your worth?
By a combination of the joy I bring to the lives of those I care about and the sense of peace I feel internally.

19. Have you ever been to Las Vegas?
Nope. I've never really had the desire to go either. Just not my thing, I guess. So many other places I would choose to see over Vegas.

20. How long is your commute?
A little over 9 miles. 15 minutes without traffic. 40 minutes if traffic is at its peak. INSANITY.

Snapshot from Along the Broken Road: May 2010

Photo of me:

1) Candle scents this month:
Clean Cotton. Sweet Violet. Blue Hydrangea. Garden Sweetpea. Willow Breeze. Ocean Blossom. Sweet Honeysuckle. Drift Away. Midnight Jasmine. Lavender Fields. Blueberry Scone. Vanilla Cupcake. Buttercream.

2) What I am reading this month:
Not much of anything. I am perpetually behind on blogs & magazines, so I've been "decluttering" in those areas.

3) Top three songs I was drawn to:
"Love Like Crazy," Lee Brice. "My Wish," Rascal Flatts. "Falling Slowly," Lee Dewyze & Crystal Bowersox.

4) Movies I saw:
Sex & the City 2. Yes, the first one was better. But this one still made me laugh. A lot.

5) Favorite tv moments of the month:
"Running" (The Good Wife): Perfect season finale, perfect cliffhanger. "Point of View" (CSI: NY): Interesting twist on the old Hitchcock movie "Rear Window." "Vacation Getaway" (CSI: NY): All three CSI season finales were, but this one left me gasping & my heart racing! "The Staircase Implementation (The Big Bang Theory): Friends spoiled me with what may be the best flashback episodes of all time, so I was nervous about Big Bang Theory going down this road. I didn't need to be. I was *not* disappointed! "Team Braverman" and "Lost and Found" (Parenthood): The last two episodes of the season made me laugh. And cry. And impatiently wait for next season.

6) Something yummy I made:
Scallops with Mushrooms and Spinach.

7) Restaurants where I ate:
Biergarten (Germany pavilion, EPCOT). Bonefish Grill. Tropicana Field. Red Mesa. Longhorn Steak House. CineBistro.

8) Something i am thankful for:
The opportunity to grow up with strong family roots. My family is extensive, on my Dad's side, and most of my relatives put down their own roots very close to my hometown. I grew up right in the middle of many of them. There were at least a dozen relatives within walking distance of my grandparents' home. I knew each of them by name. One of these relatives--the wife of one of my Dad's numerous cousins--passed away on May 11. I have many wonderful memories of Laurel. She was one of my favorite relatives, always laughing & friendly & smiling. And while I am sad that those of us who remain here have had to say goodbye, I know that she is in a far better place now. I am thankful for having such a large family, for the chance to get to know so many of them, even if I haven't seen them in quite a while, and for all the wonderful memories I can call to mind.

9) A goal I had for this month:
To survive. I'm not kidding. I need a vacation badly. Running on fumes here.

10) This month I looked forward to:
The opening of S&TC2. And Sox-Rays with Brandi.

11) Something I want to remember about this month:
My life isn't always "boring." Sometimes it runs me ragged. It's then that I truly appreciate how it's usually uneventful.

12) A photo I took this month:

Mike Lowell (second from the left) talking the ear off of anyone who dared to stand next to him. After he finished in the dugout, he moved to the bullpen.

Sometimes it really isn't whether you win or lose, but how you play the game.

If you're a baseball fan, you no doubt heard about--if you didn't see it yourself--the bad call that cost Tigers' pitcher, Armando Galarraga, a perfect game this evening. My initial reaction was outrage, born of frustration with the rash of abysmal officiating of baseball games in recent years. As the night has worn on, I've given it some additional thought.

I feel badly for Galarraga. Though he will know in his heart that he notched himself a perfect game (plus one out), he won't get the notation on his official record. I felt badly for him right from the split second I realized that safe call had been unjustly made. Even if (big if) MLB awards him a perfect game retroactively, the rush of the moment will be gone. He won't celebrate on the field with his teammates with his heart racing & his face feeling as though the grin will crack it wide open.

But I feel equally bad for the umpire. Jim Joyce has been one of the better umpires in the game, at least in my limited recollection. He isn't a name I curse on a regular basis, of that I am certain. And tonight, he made a horrible call. And my gut knew that the minute he saw the replay, he'd feel physically ill. Despite the baseball purist I tend to be, I can't help wishing Joyce had at least had the option, given the circumstances, to say he'd like to see a replay to back his call, while the game was still live.

A few minutes ago, I saw that he had, in fact, seen the replay once he was off the field. I give him a lot of credit for openly admitting: "I don't know what to do, I cost that kid a perfect game." He went on to say that before seeing the replay, he believed the runner was safe, but that if he had been in the pitcher's shoes, he would have gotten up in his face over that call...yet Galarraga never said a single word. In fact, Galarraga's only reaction was a somewhat disbelieving smile, a shake of his head & getting set to face the next batter.

Jim Joyce feels awful. He's sorry. He made a mistake and he owns it. That's all I can ask of another human being. I truly feel awful for him right now. As bad as for Galarraga. Tomorrow, Galarraga will continue to have the sympathy of many. Tomorrow, Joyce has to step back out on that same field to call the final game of that series, where he will likely spend the game booed, heckled and ridiculed. He is a man, flesh & blood, like every one of us...and no one feels worse than he already does. I can't imagine the helplessness and regret weighing on his chest right now.

What strikes me is the compassion shown by Galarraga, who quietly stated that he feels worse for Jim Joyce than about the outcome of the game, that nobody is perfect, and that he hugged Joyce after the game ended. The humble spirit of a man "wronged," with more concern for the well-being of the man who "wronged" him than for his own personal losses. I am shamed when I think of all the opportunities I have had to react in that manner and most decidedly have *not*.

Jim Joyce, I admire the humility with which you accepted responsibility without excuse or shrugging it off. It takes a big man to own his mistakes, and you are a lesson in how we should act when we make them, which we *all* do, yet not many of us with open emotional acceptance as you have. You apologized with great remorse on camera, and you took Galarraga aside & expressed your deep regret to him personally. You haven't made an enemy of *every* baseball fan...and I suspect I do not stand alone. It's easy for us, watching on our televisions, with instant replay from multiple angles and with slow motion, to say a call was a no-brainer, but the fans don't stand in your shoes, making calls in real time, without the benefits of those tools--and you aren't notorious for making bad calls at an alarming rate. Yours is a job I would not want to have, but thank you for doing your part to make a game I love enjoyable & fair. I hope I can show even half the grace you have in accepting my much smaller, far less scrutinized mistakes on a daily basis.

Armando Galarraga, you may not have a perfect game noted in your stats, but you have shown up a large number of people with the class you exhibited tonight, in the face of deep disappointment. Very few professional athletes have my deep respect anymore, but you have rocketed to the top of my list. You are a stand-up human being, and I tip my cap to you. Please take a seat next to Mike Lowell. I'll not forget your name, but it won't be for what you were denied. It will be for the way you rose above and showed yourself to be a fine young man, when very few others would have, and no one would have judged you for it if you'd reacted differently. The recognition you deserve tonight far exceeds what you accomplished with a baseball and your pitching arm.

20 Questions: May 30, 2010

1. Have you ever built a snowman?
I have but mostly small ones. I think I only successfully constructed one "life-size" one. This obviously took place quite a while ago. I wonder if I would be any better at it now?

2. Do you trust your instincts?
More now than ever before. And when I don't, it sure seems like I live to regret it. My gut is far wiser than I give it credit for being sometimes.

3. Can you sew?
On a basic level. I can replace buttons & mend a seam. I can kind of do a hem, but not well. I'd like to learn more though.

4. What kind of system do you have for keeping tracking of your bills?
It's complex when you're on the outside looking in but it makes perfect sense to me. I build a baseline budget for the full year, making adjustments as necessary. I track all my spending. It keeps me honest & true to my budget.

5. Do you have any rings on your hands?
Not a single one. I think I've owned three rings in my entire life. One my brother tangled with & I think he still holds a grudge. One stopped being "my style." The last one I gave back.

6. Name someone in your life with blue eyes:
Other than me? ::bats eyelashes:: My dad.

7. When did you last see the sun rise?
This very morning. I woke up around 4am for some reason & couldn't shut off my brain.

8. What is the last thing you wrote?
I filled out a check to pay my rent.

9. If you could change one thing about your home, what would it be?
It would have a bigger kitchen with better storage & a place for a table.

10. Can you remember your childhood phone number?
Yes, I can. And my grandparents' as well.

11. Do you feel in control of your life?
As in control as I need to be.

12. What was the last thing you put in your mouth?
Publix Raspberry Blush Sherbet.

13. What beverage do you reach for in the morning?
Real unsweetened cranberry juice that I mix half-and-half with either pineapple juice or 100% apple juice.

14. Would you rather be really hungry or really tired?
Really tired. When I'm really hungry, I get cranky. I don't like to be cranky. Unless I have to drive. Then I would rather be hungry because driving tired scares me.

15. What piece of jewelry do you wear most often?
Probably my cross necklace.

16. What three items can always be found in your refrigerator?
The aforementioned cranberry juice. Water. Yogurt.

17. How old is your computer?
My desktop is a refurb that I got almost four years ago. My laptop was new, a birthday gift, about a year & a half ago.

18. Who do you look the most like in your family?
I think I'm a pretty good blend of both my parents, which means if I see myself next to either one in a photo, I can see the common features, but when I'm on my own, I look like neither one.

19. Were you afraid of the dark as a child?
Only if I found myself outside by myself. I had a vivid imagination & could easily psyche myself out. My Gram's frequent warnings of some creature she called a jackyl contributed to this, I think. Most likely because I couldn't conjure up an actual image of what this thing might be. Fear of the unknown is far more powerful than fear of the known. If I had to run out to the car for something I forgot, I would scurry & throw furtive looks over my shoulders.

20. What is your favorite flavor of pudding?
I *love* vanilla pudding.

I Want Wednesday: May 12, 2010

**This is very out-of-the-norm for me, but I Want these shoes. I would never be able to justify spending this much money on a pair of shoes (responsible budgeting is not often *fun* budgeting), but I do really like them.

**Now, back to your regularly scheduled Dawn. I Want to add a Wakefield t-shirt to my Sox gear. I would have settled for just the standard Sox player tee, but then I saw this one. I really really *really* want this one.

**And before Tek retires, I need to add a shirt or a jersey or something, representing the Cap'n in my closet. I don't care which it is--road, home, alternate, batting practice, standard player tee--but I Want it to have his captain's C on the chest. I didn't realize, til I looked just now, that most don't have the C. Mine must. Non-negotiable.

**While I was browsing, I happened across this tee, which I Want just because I like it a lot.

**And now I Want this one too, because it covers the Monstah *and* Fenway Park, which I do not have in my current collection. It is also the only green Sox shirt I would consider owning. All others must be red or navy (or some neutral color background).

**I happened to stumble across this image in my online wanderings. I am in *love* with this. I have no idea where or how I can get my hands on a print like this, but I Want one to frame & hang. If anyone happens to stumble across one, I *need* to know!

Right Now: May 11, 2010

Outside my window... are hungry squirrels. They are never ever full. And they aren't afraid to let me know this.

I am thinking... that the American flag isn't offensive. It represents my country & should always be allowed to be proudly displayed within its borders. By all means, celebrate your cultural heritage (provided you aren't slaughtering virgins on an altar or something) but respect the country in which you are celebrating. If you are a citizen of this country, you should be proud of this flag, regardless of where you came from or what roots you are celebrating, and I have to question anyone who can't do both. (If you're so ashamed of and offended by this flag, perhaps you should reconsider where you live?) And if you're merely a visitor here, please be a gracious guest, and respect my flag as I respect yours, no matter what holiday you're celebrating. ::steps down from soapbox::

I am thankful for... the opportunity to work hard, even when it drives me a little crazy.

From the kitchen... came just some noodles & a salad as side dishes to the chicken that was cooked on the grill.

I am wearing... boxer shorts & my Pedey t-shirt, in honor of my latest motto: "Pedey Power fueled by Rally Socks!"

I am creating... a menu for next week.

I am going... to watch some of the Rays-Angels game with the tv on sleep-timer when I get into bed in a few minutes. I bet I'll see about three pitches.

I am reading... Better Homes & Gardens magazine. So much eye candy!

Monday Stream of Consciousness: May 10, 2010

It's not the first time I've mentioned it or ranted about it, but *what* is the deal with people not using their turn signals?! Is it to difficult to turn them on? Is there something un-cool about using them? Do they feel the rules of the road just do not apply to them? Do they possess telepathic powers that alert them when other cars are turning or changing lanes, thus forgetting that the rest of us mere mortals need an indication when these driving maneuvers are about to occur? Because seriously. SERIOUSLY. Just use them, people. And if you are one of those drivers who doesn't? You're darn right I'm looking at you. While on the topic of the car. I consider my trip between work and home to be a bridge. Whatever took place during my workday needs to be left behind so that it doesn't carry over to my evening. The best way for me to do that is to turn up the radio and just sing. It clears my head. It's probably a good thing I don't carpool though. That would be enough to ruin the evenings of anyone subjected to my singing. While I was making my way home, I passed two little old people, sitting in the shade of a tree in their lawn chairs, holding hands & just watching the traffic go by. It made me smile. Today's stream of consciousness brought to you by my commute.

20 Questions: May 9, 2010

1. Fiction or non-fiction?
I enjoy both, as long as the reading isn't textbook-dry.

2. How many hours of sleep did you get last night?
About six & a half.

3. What does it take for you to be happy?
Ultimately, it requires "only" the following: being warm, dry, fed, safe & loved. Additionally, I find that when I go to church regularly & don't stretch my personal time so thin with plans that I allow no down-time to recharge, that I "like" myself much better and have a much more positive attitude, which also contributes to my happiness.

4. What is your birthstone?
Opal and Pink Tourmaline are both birthstones for October.

5. If you could relive a year in your life, what age would it be, and why?
Just one...? Wow. I'm going to go with...1993, when I was 16-17. Although I could really do without reliving high school, I think I'd like to go back to a time when I didn't have adult responsibilities looming over my head, but I was old enough to truly appreciate my grandparents. I'd go back, take more photos, ask more questions, record more stories. And be wise enough to soak it all in while I had the chance.

6. Go back to three different ages and give yourself some advice.
Age 13: You don't have to be so shy. Turns out there are some people who are pretty awesome & just as tentative as you are. You don't have to talk to everyone, but keep your eye out for the other kids who are pretty quiet too.
Age 23: You're going to survive. You don't think you will and it hurts a lot, but this really is for the best. Someday, you're going to like the strong woman this helped you to be.
Age 26: Listen to your gut. It isn't wrong & deep down, you know it.

7. What sort of people do you think read your blog?
Those who love me & those who are very bored. ;-)

8. Which Olympics do you enjoy more: Summer or Winter?
Winter. The Summer sports just do not hold my attention for some reason.

9. Do you use profanity?
Very rarely will you hear anything worse than *ss or *itch come out of my mouth. If you do, stand clear.

10. What is your opinion of snow?
It's beautiful. Especially from many many miles away, where you do not have to shovel it or drive in it. It's also very pretty from the other side of a window, where I am warm & cozy. I love to go out in it for just a bit, when it's fresh & pristine, and I love it over the holidays, but other than that? I have no use for it.

11. Do you know which was is east, right now?
Uhhh... sorta?

12. When is the first time you can recall being proud of yourself?
I was maybe eleven years old (?) and I was able to put a baby to sleep that no one else was able to.

13. Do you carve a pumpkin for Halloween?
I did a few times, when I lived up north, but never down here. Too hot, it would never last.

14. When you are getting ready to leave your home, what are three things you always do?
Make sure the lights are off (or strategically left on, if necessary), that everything that needs to be unplugged has been, and that no candles are burning.

15. Can you whistle?
A little tune. But not those loud get-your-attention type whistles. My Gramp used to be able to do those but I could never figure it out.

16. What is your state "known" for?
Sunshine. Walt Disney World. Old people. Beaches. Citrus. Alligators. Palm trees. Messing up elections.

17. Where were you when you learned Ronald Reagan was shot?
In my grandparents' living room. I was only about four & a half years old. I understood that something important had happened, but not really what it was or meant.

18. Have you had the chicken pox?
Oh *boy* did I. I was in eighth grade, it was a warmer than typical April and I had them from head to toe & then some. Missed two weeks of school, but because my brother brought my assignments home for me, I was able to keep up with my work & it didn't affect my graduation.

19. What is your favorite precious or semi-precious stone?
I really like rubies and garnets.

20. You need to go up two floors in a building. Do you use the stairs or the elevator?
Stairs. My legs work just fine & a little extra exercise never hurts. One exception: if I have luggage, I will use the elevator.

Memory Lane: May 6, 2010

I used to babysit for this family that lived near my grandparents. I remember being somewhat enamored with their home. It was this gorgeous big old farmhouse. There was a mudroom entry way off the garage, like the ones you see in Better Homes & Gardens magazine, complete with cubbies and hooks and a bench with a cushion. It opened into the kitchen on one side and into the foyer with the front door on the other end. Both points of entry led into the kitchen. And the kitchen? Was amazing. There were endless counter tops and beautiful cabinets in a warm wood finish, a gigantic island in the middle, and a breakfast nook with big windows to let in the morning light. The living room, off the kitchen, was big, yet still cozy, with comfy over-sized couches, a fireplace, a piano, and some chairs & tables arranged along the bank of windows overlooking the backyard and a to-die-for view. Right near the doorway from the kitchen were these heavy wooden double doors that, when pushed open, revealed the formal dining room, with its table that seemed to stretch forever, and a sideboard and hutch that had likely been in the family for ages.

Behind the living room was a hallway that led to the office and a bathroom, and a staircase leading to the bedrooms. At the top of the stairs, you'd find the kids' two bedrooms, not very big, but still just the right size for having your own space, and at the far end of the hall was the master bedroom suite, with double doors, that created a private sanctuary out of the bedroom I could fit my entire apartment into, not counting the reading nook with its smaller version of the fireplace below, the spacious bathroom and the two walk-in closets. The doors were always wide open when I was there, and the room was always impeccably decorated & cleaned. The floors throughout the house were shiny hardwood with perfectly placed rugs to soften it & provide warmth in the chill of Winter. The walls were painted in rich warm country colors, yet were never overpowering.

What truly fascinated me, though, were two things: All the built-in nooks and shelves and drawers and cabinets tucked into the most opportune places. Not an inch of space seemed wasted, and yet it was never "too much." And the *second* staircase, the one leading up from the kitchen. At the top of the steps, you could turn right, follow the hall, and find yourself right outside the master bedroom, but if you turned *left*, you would pass a door to the attic, a bathroom, and the guest room. There was a door in the hallway that could be closed so that the bedroom and bathroom became like their own private little apartment. But it was the existence of the second staircase that so captivated me.

Once the children were in bed for the night, I would wander slowly through the house, soaking in its beauty. I never opened anything that was closed or poked my nose into things where it did not belong. I simply ambled aimlessly through the halls & rooms, admiring & wondering what it was like to live in such a beautiful structure, so very unlike the house where my Gram & Gramp lived, with its linoleum kitchen floor, red carpet that had been there longer than I had been alive, and its one lonely staircase.

The farmhouse was, and I am sure remains, quite lovely, but it is in that smaller home, to which I compared that sprawling farmhouse, that my mind often wanders, recreating the layout, inch by precious inch, that I find infinitely more beautiful now. The details of that home are what spring to my mind as I hear Miranda Lambert singing:
You leave home,
You move on,
And you do the best you can
I got lost in this whole world
And forgot who I am
I thought if I could touch this place or feel it
This brokenness inside me might start healin'
Out here it's like I'm someone else
I thought that maybe I could find myself
If I could just come in I swear I'll leave,
Won't take nothin' but a memory
From the house that built me

Nearly four years after the fact, I no longer feel broken inside. Healing has taken place, and I am whole and strong and filled with a golden joy--that would seem silly to speak of, this "golden joy," if I didn't truly feel it the way I do, and so it doesn't seem silly to me, only something for which I am deeply and eternally grateful--and I actually feel more like myself than I have possibly since I was last in my grandparents' home. I don't want to go back to fix myself or recover anything that has been lost. I just have this burning desire to walk through, one last time. To let my eyes wander & settle on the walls. To run my hand one more time along the railing. To stare out the windows, seeing not what stands there now, but filmstrips of days in my past that took place there. To soak in the million intangible memories that dance at random through my mind.

"If I could just come in, I swear I'll leave, won't take nothin' but a memory...

...from the house that built me."

Observation: It's not easy being green.

I get it, Aquafina. You're doing your part. 50% less plastic. However, I'm guessing you didn't count on that translating to 50% of the water ending up on my desk.

Might need to re-think this one.

Right Now: May 4, 2010

Outside my window... it's hot. And humid. And I'm really just not ready for it to be Summer yet.

I am thinking... how happy I am to see my Sox looking a little more like themselves, and a little less like what it would be like to watch me out there.

I am thankful for... air-conditioning.

From the kitchen... came my stuffed shells tonight. And they were tasty.

I am wearing... boxer shorts & one of my Mike Lowell t-shirts.

I am creating... blog posts in my head.

I am going... a little crazy this week. I really need a vacation.

I am reading... blog posts & magazines, while I am between books.

I am hoping... the Sox can win again tomorrow.

I am hearing... the fan on the laptop & the whoosh of the air conditioner.

Around the house... are annoying little chores that I really need to do, if I only had the ambition.

One of my favorite things... is a classic Mike Lowell wall-ball RBI double.

A few plans for the rest of the week... include watching the Sox games & heading over to check out the farmers market on Saturday. And those aforementioned chores.

A picture to share...

This one is from the archives. Back when I went to the zoo in February. It pretty much sums up how I feel right now.

Monday Stream of Consciousness: May 3, 2010

Yeah. So. Blowing the cobwebs off Ye Olde Blogge. Yikes. I've felt completely & overwhelmingly buried for a couple of weeks now. And I am not even sure, exactly, what I have to show for it. I'm pretty sure my To-Do List gets *longer* somehow, each time I cross something off. I'm sure there's a Law of Physics that proves that impossible, but my To-Do List begs to differ. I'm actually a little intimidated by it, but in light of my morning proclamation (via Twitter-Fair warning: I'm putting up a negativity buffer. This is going to be a GOOD week. If you get gloomy on me, I will sunshine right back at ya!), at least I know I won't be bored! I can't speak for how blogging will fit in with this ginormous To-Do List issue, but I've put it on there & we will see what happens. In other news, the Sox are keeping me humble lately, but I am ok with that. The last thing I ever want to be is an entitled sports fan who cannot lose with grace & still support her team. (Ok, maybe that's not the *last* thing I'd ever want to be, but hyperbole or otherwise, you catch my drift.) And now I leave you with a parting thought: I received my "Rays Insider" email this morning (don't judge, I get my tickets to see the Sox through the Rays website & there are some perks to them believing it's the Rays I'm there to see) and they were promoting their post-game fireworks on Fridays. IN A DOME. I'm trying to wrap my head around how this is possibly a good idea. Or how the St Pete Fire Marshall has determined this is a safe venture. What I do know: I will not ever be hanging around after a Friday night game.

Snapshot from Along the Broken Road: April 2010

Photo of me:

I've used this photo about a zillion times this month. It's the only photo of me. But I think it warrants as much use as possible. =)

1) Current candle scents:
Buttercream. Spa Fresh. Beautiful Day. Tahitian Tiare Flower. Lilac Blossoms.

2) What I am reading this month:
I finished Where Are You Now? (Mary Higgins Clark) and I am still randomly reading Watching Baseball (Jerry Remy, Corey Sandler) and Joy in Mudville (Mort Gerberg), but I haven't started a new book that I am "actively" reading yet.

3) Top three songs I was drawn to:
"Fearless," Taylor Swift. "The House That Built Me," Miranda Lambert. "Gimme That Girl," Joe Nichols.

4) Movies I saw:
Not a single one. Can barely keep up with DVR'd television now that baseball season is here.

5) Favorite tv moments of the month:
The whole "Peter" episode of Fringe.

6) Something yummy I made:
Asparagus Parmesan Au Gratin

7) Restaurants where I ate:
Bonefish Grill. Sunshine Seasons (Land pavilion, Epcot). Macaroni Grill.

8) Something I am thankful for:
Spending time with my Dad.

9) A goal I had for this month:
To Spring Clean. I'm about 80% done. I had to wait til the trees stopped pollinating before I washed my windows. Now I'm just putting it off. Along with the ceiling fans.

10) This month I looked forward to:
Getting to see my Dad.

11) Something I want to remember about this month:
I want to remember how easy it is to make a child's day with the simplest things. I sent my god daughter a package for Easter. It had a few coloring books, a new box of 24 Crayola crayons, a couple of cute little notepads with brightly colored fun Spring covers, and little Easter eggs with M&Ms & Hershey's Kisses. Heather told me Catherine was so excited. I think we'd all be so much better off if we would still remember to get excited over the little things in life.

12) A photo I took this month:

My Easter Lily. I have to get one every year. This one was one of the best I ever chose. Six blooms, staggered, lasting nearly two weeks, peaking for Easter Sunday.

Memory Lane: April 22, 2010

I'm five years old and it's getting cold
I've got my big coat on
I hear your laugh and look up smiling at you
I run and run
Past the pumpkin patch and the tractor rides
Look now the sky is gold
I hug your legs and fall asleep on the way home

I don't know why all the trees change in the fall
I know you're not scared of anything at all
Don't know if Snow White's house is near or far away
But I know I had the best day with you today

I'm thirteen now and don't know how my friends could be so mean
I come home crying and you hug me tight and grab the keys
And we drive and drive until we find a town far enough away
And we talk and window shop till I've forgotten all their names
I don't know who I'm gonna talk to now at school
But I know I'm laughing on the car ride home with you
Don't know how long it's gonna take to feel okay
But I know I had the best day with you today

I have an excellent father
His strength is making me stronger
God smiles on my little brother
Inside and out he's better than I am

I grew up in a pretty house and I had space to run
And I had the best days with you

There is a video I found from back when I was three
You set up a paint set in the kitchen and you're talking to me
It's the age of princesses and pirate ships and the seven dwarfs
Daddy's smart and you're the prettiest lady in the whole wide world

Now I know why all the trees change in the fall
I know you were on my side even when I was wrong
And I love you for giving me your eyes
Standing back and watching me shine
And I didn't know if you knew
So I'm taking this chance to say that I had the best day with you today

lyrics "The Best Day," by Taylor Swift

Right Now: April 20, 2010

Outside my window... it's dark & still.

I am thinking... how cool 3D ultrasound images are. And how cute my nephew is.

I am thankful for... Darnell McDonald & his walkoff single.

From the kitchen... there will be hot dogs for dinner tomorrow. I'm in the mood for some warm-weather food.

I am wearing... capri pants & my Mike Lowell t-shirt.

I am creating... blog posts again. Finally.

I am going... to Epcot with my dad, his wife & my half-brother on Thursday.

I am reading... "Where Are You Now?" (Mary Higgins Clark) and it is creeping me out--but in that good suspense story kind of way. It is also confusing me. There are a lot of characters & the way they have been introduced, it's so difficult to keep track of who's who & how they are related. This may be by design, given the nature of the book, but it sure is taking some brain power to keep track of them all!

I am hoping... the Sox can get on a winning streak now.

I am hearing... the dishwasher humming as it heats up water.

Around the house... things are clean & fresh after some Spring Cleaning. I have a few more little projects to work on but it's coming together.

One of my favorite things... is crossing items off my ToDo List.

A few plans for the rest of the week... Epcot on Thursday (as I mentioned), Sox viewing (of course), finishing up some more Spring Cleaning projects this weekend. That's about it.

A picture to share...

...from my trip over to Magic Kingdom a couple of weekends ago.

Monday Stream of Consciousness: April 19, 2010

I've found myself taken aback by how many times I hear the Today Show interviewing a child or the family of a child about teenage violence. Bullies have always existed. I suspect they will til the end of the time. There will always be those people who derive satisfaction or power or confidence from picking on anyone they deem weaker or less important. But it positively sickens me how far it has gone in recent times. No more does a squabble turn into a bloody nose or a black eye, some tousled hair, a ripped pant leg & two scowls as the participants await the arrival of called parents. Children are now beating one another to within an inch of their lives, pummeling each other into comas, lighting other children on fire, driving pre-teens to suicide. I cannot wrap my brain around this. I just...cannot. How does this happen? I've often observed that there are few tyrants more merciless than children, but on their own levels. And then it occurred to me, the example adults are setting & sadly, maybe I'm not all that shocked. We criticize, berate, slander, gossip and tear down our peers every chance we get it seems. Blog comments are left by anonymous haters. Message boards are frequented by trolls. We flip each other off on the roads. There is such a blatant disregard & disrespect for others all around us...and I find myself no longer surprised, because children are, and always have been, mirrors of what they see & learn. That leaves me simply feeling appalled. And more determined than ever to be careful of how I treat people. If you have nothing nice to say, shut your mouth & walk away. Give your attention to something that truly does matter. Like the Red Sox. And their dark spiral into the ground. Except that it's only the beginning of third week of a six-month season & there is a lot of baseball left to be played. There will be slumps & injuries & hot streaks & rookie sensations. In the mean time, I will take an April slump to one in September. And if we shed a few more Pink Hats during this early season hiccup, it won't hurt my feelings. They will be donning pinstripes or sunbeam gear by May. See? This is where we need to keep the taunting: good-natured ribbing & friendly banter & proverbial beatdowns of the 10-0 variety with your preferred team on the double-digits side of the shutout. Unless you root for the Yankees or the Rays. ;-)

20 Questions: April 18, 2010

1. What kind of weather do you most dread?
Endless humidity. It wears me down. If you had asked me this back when I lived in Connecticut though, I would have said ice.

2. Which drives more of your decisions: your head or your heart?
I'm a Libra, which means I thrive on balance. Translation: I don't lean in either direction more than the other, and I weigh out all my options. Sometimes to the point of teeth-gnashing by anyone waiting for me to make.a.decision.already. Which means that when the decision is made, it's a healthy dose of both...otherwise known as: your gut.

3. When were you last in a church? What was the occasion?
This morning. Because it was Sunday? It's rare that I miss a week.

4. What is the closest framed photo to you?
There are two on my end table. One formal portrait of Miss Catherine on her second Christmas. And one black-and-white snapshot of my grandparents on their wedding day.

5. Mustard goes on:
Kielbasa. Ham & cheese sandwiches. Brats (the sausage, not the children).

6. Do you fold your underwear or does it just get stuffed in the drawer?
It is folded. In nice neat little thirds.

7. Which Disney character is your favorite?
Aurora. You probably know her as Sleeping Beauty. Of the non-princess variety, Eeyore.

8. Do you sleep with bare feet or do you need socks on?
Sometimes I would sleep with socks on in the Winter back up north, mostly because when my hands & feet get cold, it can take me days to finally fend off the chill & get warm again. Down here, I never ever sleep with socks on.

9. Do you know how to shoot a gun?
I do. I might require a brief refresher because I've only done it once (well, I went went one time, I fired the actual gun quite a few times while there), but it came to me pretty easily & I suspect it is much like the proverbial riding of a bike.

10. Have you ever taken pictures in a photo booth?
Never! Can you believe it??

11. Do you write in the margins of books as you read them?
No. I do not ever write in books. I might stick a Post-it flag on a page to come back to, but I don't leave marks on the pages. It feels wrong to me somehow.

12. How do you feel about Thursdays?
They are Posers. Every freaking week, I think it's Friday. Every freaking week, I am wrong. Thursday is my nemesis.

13. What was the last item you purchased and returned?
A shirt that was going to be a Christmas gift, but I didn't realize I had grabbed the wrong size & when I went back, they were out of the right size.

14. What is the last letter of your middle name?
N.

15. Do you read tabloids?
Sometimes I read the covers when I'm waiting to be rung out at the grocery store, but just for laughs at the ridiculousness that they come up with. I don't think I have ever actually opened one up. I think it's kind of pathetic that there is so much money to be made, making up lies about famous people.

16. What is the last kind of cookie that you ate?
A Spring-themed Oreo. And it was good.

17. What was your seventh grade teacher's name?
This one took me a second, which surprised me. Mrs Higgins. One of my very favorite teachers.

18. What is the newest television show you've acquired in your personal lineup?
Parenthood. Started watching it a couple of weeks ago. The episode was pretty good, so I checked the Prime Time On Demand Channel & they had it there, so I was able to watch all but the pilot!

19. Three signs Winter is here:
The humidity goes away. I can open up my windows again because the air conditioner is finally turned off. Thanksgiving is approaching.

20. Are you afraid of the dark?
Of the dark itself, no. Of Things That Go Bump in the Dark...well...let's just say I can sufficiently freak myself out when I apply a sprinkling of imagination.

Slice of Life: April 17, 2010

I'm a week behind myself. At least. I should have posted this *last* Saturday, but I didn't. So there's that. I suppose I could have let it go but it was such a telling part of that weekend, the perfect "slice," really. And this weekend is all Spring Cleaning, big whoop-dee-doo. So hop into your time machine & let's turn the clock back to last week, when I plopped myself in Magic Kingdom to get acquainted with my new camera.

I played with exposure...

...and shutter speed...

...and depth of field. All things I could only control on very basic levels with my trusty little Kodak.

The learning process is way too much fun!

I Want Wednesday: April 14, 2010

**I Want a hammock in the shade. And a good breeze. And a couple of magazines. And a glass of lemonade.

I've been MIA for a week. I can't seem to get my head on straight. I am scattered & easily distracted. I have no motivation & no ability to focus. Which says to me that I need a long weekend or something. There isn't one in sight, unfortunately. However, I plan to spend my whole weekend at home, relaxing, getting caught back up. Just a nice low-key weekend. Two more days to go...

Right Now: April 6, 2010

I am thinking... that Angel Hernandez is a joke.

I am thankful for... the fact that the Sox cannot possibly be swept this series.

From the kitchen... on Easter, there was ham, mashed potatoes, cauliflower, yellow & zucchini squash, and strawberry shortcake.

I am wearing... black cargo capri pants & a red Red Sox t-shirt.

I am creating... a lot of interesting photos that will end up deleted during this learning process.

I am going... to bed. If this Sox-Yankees game ever ends.

I am reading... a Mary Higgins Clark book. I'm too lazy to walk into the bedroom to verify the name of it.

I am hoping... the Sox can score some more runs. Sooner rather than later would be better.

I am hearing... the baseball game on tv, some sort of creature scuffling around in the leaves outside, the whir of the ceiling fan.

Around the house... are various little piles of things that will get put away before I head to bed. If this game ever ends.

One of my favorite things... is a Mike Lowell sighting (on tv).

A few plans for the rest of the week... include watching the Sox, doing some laundry, and maybe heading up to WDW on Sunday.

A picture to share... except that they are all still in my camera. And I am too tired to upload them. Boo.

Monday Stream of Consciousness: April 5, 2010

There is pollen everywhere down here right now. The weather guy on tv said that it's a perfect storm really, because the cold weather prevented a lot of the trees from blooming when they typically would be, so now everything is blooming all at once. My apartment complex is surrounded by & filled with trees. I have to squeegee my car windows in the morning because simply using windshield washer fluid creates a a yellow-green paste. I'm really glad that the allergies I had as a child have all but vanished. Otherwise, I would be miserable right now. I'm kind of bummed, though, that the orange blossoms didn't last as long as they usually do. My Easter lily is still going strong though & it smells pretty good too. I had to give in & run my air conditioning last night, and again tonight. I'm not ready for this. Neither is my electric bill.

20 Questions: April 4, 2010

1. Whose baby did you last hold?
Hmmm... it's been a while. I'm going to go with Gosia's son, Alex. I'm pretty sure she was the last one to have a baby. He's a big boy. Over a year now. It's been too long since I snuggled a baby.

2. What is your preferred brand of dishwashing soap?
Method. Usually the cucumber scent.

3. Cadbury Eggs or Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs?
Reese's Peanut Butter. No competition.

4. When were you last on an airplane?
December 30. Coming back from California.

5. Are you afraid of lightning?
Not if I am inside. I am not crazy about being outdoors when there's lightning though! We get some mean looking bolts here. I respect them.

6. Something that happened to you in 1992:
This is the lamest answer ever: I turned 16. Everything else I thought of happened in either 1991 or 1993, upon further reflection! If I don't just accept being lame, I am going to still be sitting here in 2092, staring at this screen.

7. When did you last run?
I ran to catch up to Troy while we were walking the other day. I had stopped to toss a peanut to a squirrel & I had to catch up. And by 'run,' I mean 'jog.' He told me I run like a girl. I say, I *am* a girl, what do you want from me?

8. Are you guilty of peeking in medicine cabinets?
No. I'm afraid I will find something that horrifies me. I do not need the mental images.

9. What guilty pleasure do you hate to admit liking?
I watch American Idol. There. Are you happy? =P

10. Has anyone ever called you a bad influence?
Yes. The mother of an old high school boyfriend. I won't lie. That hurt a lot. Because I really really wasn't. I was (and am) way too worried about disappointing anyone or getting into trouble. I have since moved on, but at the time, I was really distraught that anyone could think I was a bad influence. Brandi keeps claiming I am one now. She is mistaken. =P

11. Pineapple or watermelon?
Pineapple. I'll eat watermelon, but it's not my favorite.

12. Have you ever seen the ocean, live and in person?
I have. I grew up in Connecticut, so I have seen the Atlantic on many occasions. I have also seen the Pacific. I think it is beautiful.

13. Tell us about your nickname(s).
I'll tell you about one of them: Nonny. One of my daycare babies couldn't say "Dawn" so she called me "Nonny." (She called one of the girls I worked with "Kickin" (Kristin). One of the cutest little kids *ever*.) There are a couple of people who call me Nonny now, as a result of hearing that story.

14. Do you have a ceiling fan somewhere in your home?
I have two. One in my living room & one in my bedroom. You *need* them in Florida. Gotta keep that air moving!

15. What do you look forward to most about Autumn?
Down here, a break from the humidity, though it sure takes its sweet time in arriving. Back in New England, I looked forward to the crisp days, the gorgeous foliage, and apples-apples-everywhere.

16. What would I find in the trunk of your vehicle right now?
My spare tire, three boxes and a baseball bat.

17. And in your kitchen sink?
Two pots, a baking sheet and a spoon, soaking. And the bowls & forks from the strawberry shortcake we had for dessert.

18. Who do you kinda wanna smack?
Joe Morgan.

19. Preferred sleepwear: nightgown? pajamas? undies? au naturel?
Pajama pants or shorts & a tank top.

20. When you use a grocery cart at the store, do you return it to the proper place?
I do, either in the corral, if there is one, or back to the store. It's not that difficult, plus the extra exercise never hurts. What I really don't understand? When people leave their cart right next to the corral. Is the extra half step going to kill you? My one & only exception: When it is monsooning.

Memory Lane: April 1, 2010

I cannot believe these photos were taken twenty years ago. Seriously. SERIOUSLY.

Seriously?

Ok, I'm over it. Well, no, I'm not, but for the sake of the post.

I actually almost didn't get to be confirmed with my class. I had a horrible awful terrible case of chicken pox. (That my brother gave me. My brother who had a grand total of, like, eight pox. I had about eight bajillion. And it was a warmer than typical April. I was miserable. I missed two weeks of eighth grade.) But they decided that as long as I wasn't still breaking out in new pox, I could go to church, get confirmed & then go home again.

The way my childhood church did confirmation, you got confirmed on Palm Sunday, and then, as a group, received your first Communion on Maundy Thursday. I always thought that was well-planned. Very meaningful & symbolic & all that. I still remember my chosen Bible verse: "I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:20) We were given a little prayer book as well. I still have it in my cabinet, along with the Catechism & the hymnal my Gram & Dad, respectively, received for their Confirmations.

I look at that photo, most of those faces, the kids I went to school with for the first ten years of my education. And I can't believe how young we were. Or how much time has passed.

Twenty years.

Twenty.

The pastor to my left in the photo, not looking at the photo), Pastor Yops--I used to babysit his kids. They are 30, 28 and 25 now. I'm pretty sure my head just exploded. That girl standing there had no idea just how quickly it all flies by...
