ok, i'll admit it. i'm curious.

i talk a lot of smack about my "local" sports teams (the Bucs & the Devil Rays, for those of you who haven't been playing here long enough to know that on your own), partly because i bleed Boston, and partly because i abhor the way the local media represents these teams. they act like they are unquestionable championship contenders every year, and when they lose games, it's not because the team played like poo, but because [insert your choice of whiny excuses here] even though they "played a perfect game" don't you know.

whew. that being said...

when what to my wondering inbox should appear this afternoon, but a message from "my" Tampa Bay Devil Rays. (to clarify, i get emails from them because i buy tickets to games at The Trop when *my* Boston Red Sox come to town.)

i must admit, the contents of this email have me intrigued.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Big things have been brewing behind the scenes for several months now. On Thursday, the Rays finally will raise the curtain on their project, and fans will be privy to a whole new look.

New uniforms. New colors. New logo. New name. Everything is new and Tampa Bay has an all-star weekend planned to unveil their changes to the public.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

new uniforms? does this mean i won't be able to poke fun at their dorky vests anymore??
new colors? new logo? new name???

what does this mean?

and can they also maybe get rid of Staaaaaaaaaaats & Migraine for some new tv announcers too? please?

Hey, it beats blaming losing on curses.

Dawn,

I have the MLB Xtra innings package, and whenever the Sox go to Tampa I cringe and pray for the NESN feed! Those guys give Harrelson and Jackson doing White Sox games a run for their money. And who is the idiot who SCREAMS the whole game? Is there not someone we can hire to take him out?

The Devil Rays, if they EVER get any pitching not named Kazmir, have a chance to be really good.

They probably just decided that "Devil" Rays was too un-PC and will now switch to the "Super Rays" or something.

They can change whatever they want, you can still poke fun at them ;)

ESPN's uni watch column showed the uniforms. The way RAYS is spelled out, it looks like a shirt one would wear playing for Ray's Pizza in a beer league softball enterprise.

Mega: Ah, what do you know anyway? You don't even root for the Right Sox.

Ted: I subscribed to MLBtv, but it works the same as Extra Innings. Your local team is blacked out, forcing you to watch on tv. When the Sox play the Rays, I just mute the tv, and listen to Castiglione on EEI, which is part of the MLBtv package (and the choice of radio broadcast is not limited only to home team & is never blacked out). Screams during the game? Oh, you mean The Heckler? He is some guy with season tickets in the most expensive section, who goes to almost every home game. He picks one opposing player in every game & then drives them (and everyone else) insane. He's harder to hear when you're actually *at* the game, thank God. I would like to find him & staple his mouth closed though. And take away all those freaking cowbells too. Maybe they could afford some better pitching if they weren't spending all their money on new uniforms, and whatever else goes along with changing your team's name, colors, logo, etc. =P They have a hard enough time getting people to come to their games, so it isn't like they can significantly raise ticket prices.

Ingrid: The new owner of the Rays (two years ago now I think?) is a very religious guy, and the rumor all along is that he has a problem with his team name containing the word "devil." I had no idea they were going to revamp the whole look of the team though! Their home jerseys just say RAYS so it isn't like they had to be changed unless the team name isn't going to be associated with Rays at all anymore. Who even knew that ball club had enough money for a complete overhaul??

Brian: Hooray! Sounds like I will still be able to make fun of their unis then! I wonder if these will also come in a vest version. >=]
