Week 87

1) Is there an emotion that you think has gotten stronger as you've aged? If so, why do you think that has happened?
mistrust. oh Lord, there is not enough space on this blog, nor time in your day for me to cover why this has happened. let's just say that trust is no longer freely given, but must be earned, with the except of a very very tiny group of people.

2) Describe the (group of) friend(s) you enjoy hanging out with the most.
warm. easy to talk to. appreciate Disney. love to share new & different experiences. lots of laughter.

3) What are the criteria necessary for being a good parent?
oh boy. this is one of those subjects that almost has no correct, or at least "safe" answer. in my opinion, good parents do their best to be a positive role model for their children. they know their own limitations, ask for assistance when they are unsure, but learn to trust their own instincts when it comes to their unique children. they do their best to make responsible choices. they remember that their marriage (or whatever their adult relationship is) needs to be nurtured in order to maintain a strong family unit. they understand that there is a fine line between the need for rules & the need for flexibility. they work at being patient, but when human nature causes patience to fall short, they lead by example, by admitting when they were wrong & saying they're sorry. and they remember that above all, their children will have many friends, but not parents, and that it is very important to *be* the parent; there is plenty of time to be their child's friend when everyone is an adult.

4) What kind of cowardice do you most despise?
people who would rather hide the truth at the expense of others than to just be honest & face whatever comes of it.

5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.

mmmmm.... warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream, apple crisp, apple cider...

Week 88

1) What was the most powerful moment of silence you've ever experienced?
the moment of silence that follows the "closing of the tomb" and the whispered Lord's Prayer on Good Friday.

2) What are friends for?
hugs. listening. making memories. being yourself. laughter. cherishing. learning about yourself. leaning on. sharing.

3) What one school subject has turned out to be the least useful or worthwhile? Is that a surprise?
for me, anything math-related. it's no surprise. i wasn't good at it then, and i'm not good at it. it's hard for something to be worthwhile when you can't do it very well!

4) What kind of power do you want most?
power? like realistic or imaginary? realistically, the power to believe in myself. otherwise, i would like the ability to defy space & time.

5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.

sometimes you find friends in the most unlikely places....

I am really intrigued by this closing of the tomb thing on Good Friday. My tradition doesn't have it, but I would like to import it somehow. I know there is a Polish denomination that has the tomb tradition -- what they actually do is place a single piece of the Blessed Sacrament in the tomb, where it stays until the Easter Vigil, when it is taken out to great celebration. Someday I would like to see the Lutheran tomb closing ceremony...

Daniel: It's not really so much seen as heard. In every Lutheran Tenebrae service I've ever been to, the church is now dark by this point. All the candles have been extinguished. At Immanuel, the pastor used to read that part of the Gospel from memory, just his voice in the dark, and then he would close the Bible, hard, into the microphone. At Holy Trinity, the pastor would exit the sanctuary to read the Gospel, the microphone carrying his voice to the congregation. And then he would follow it with a loud bang. The whole church is just silent. It's impossible not to jump just a little. It is something I have always found so powerful...
