holiday "this or that?"
got this one in an email & it's a little different than the other one that's been circulating -- the one i did last Christmas -- so i thought i would play along. =)
Holiday: Christmas or New Years?
i have to go with Christmas, because well... it's *Christmas*. but then again i've never really had a good New Year's Eve. they've all been boring at best & horrible at worst. i don't think New Years could *ever* top Christmas for me, but maybe i can eventually have reasons to at least *like* it better.
Cookies: Sugar or Gingerbread?
mmmm... gingerbread men. yum.
Decorations: Santa or Snowmen?
snowmen please! i have lots of decorations that are Christmas-specific, but i put them all away on Epiphany & i need some things that are just plain old wintry that can remain up for a while.
Decorations: Reindeer or Elves?
reindeer. absolutely. elves -- outside of the concept of working at the North Pole -- kind of freak me out a little bit.
Colors: Red or Green?
first of all, they must be what i consider "jewel tones" -- take note of the colors i have used on my blog for Christmas! that being said, while i do like hunter green or a nice deep evergreen color, a rich barn red or cranberry does take the slight advantage.
Colors: Gold or Silver?
silver & gold, silver & gold, everyone wishes for silver and gold... hmmmm... i think silver wins by a margin.
Tree Topper: Star or Angel?
i like both, but obviously you can only use one at a time. my grandparents always had an angel; we had a star. i am *slightly* partial to a star, but i would use an angel too.
Stocking Stuffer: Fruit or Candy?
candy, please!
Tree: Real or Artificial?
*strong* preference for real. i would settle for a really nice artificial tree if i had no other choice, but you can bet i would be burning an evergreen scented candle!
Cartoons: Charlie Brown or Rudolph?
nope, sorry. not picking. i love them both equally.
Movie: It's a Wonderful Life or A Christmas Carol?
i love "It's a Wonderful Life," but George C Scott's "A Christmas Carol" wins in a photo finish.
Stocking Stuffer: Jewelry or Gift Card?
there are people who get jewelry in their stockings??? who are *these* people?! when we got a little bit older, gift cards in smaller denominations were part of our stocking stuffers. i'll tell you, not having to pay for gas or a car wash or some groceries -- *always* welcome!
Christmas List: Naughty or Nice?
well, according to this:
Drink: Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
hot chocolate, please. egg nog is... slimy (though someone is claiming it isn't...). nog. that's a funny word. and come to think of it, is it me or is there an inordinate number of Gs in "egg nog"??
Holiday Ghost: Past, Present, or Future?
i always liked the Ghost of Christmas Past. maybe because so much about Christmas, for me, involves looking back on "the good old days"...
Vacation Spot: North Pole or Winter Wonderland?
Winter Wonderland, please! sounds like lots of unblemished sparkling soft white drifts... so pretty! i wouldn't want to end up caught in a blizzard at the North Pole like the one they had in "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" & anyway, i've already taken the tour of the North Pole in one of my all-time favorite Christmas books. ;-) plus, i don't want to spoil the surprises!
Holiday Song: Jingle Bells or Silver Bells?
"Jingle Bells" -- never really was a fan of "Silver Bells"
Holiday Song: Silent Night or O' Holy Night?
oh wow... this is one *hard*. i'm going to say "Silent Night" but this is as close to a tie as you can get.
More Fun: Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
more fun? i will say Christmas Day, but only because Christmas Eve always seems so much more peaceful & reverent & filled with anticipation. Christmas Day is an explosion of joy! although when i was a kid, they were equally fun, because my family had The. Best. Christmas Eve parties *ever*.
Lights: Clear or Multi-Colored?
that depends. on the Christmas tree, multi-colored. white looks nice on the outside, but i am a firm believer in the "less is more" theory when it comes to lights on a house. i like to look at *others'* homes glowing with a million lights, but i would want just a moderate amount, tastefully done, on my own -- so as not to attract small aircraft to land or to detract from the colorfully lit tree in my front window (provided i actually had any of these things, of course).
Ornaments: Bulbs or Bows?
no bows please. they kind of irritate me. =P
Tree Decor: Ribbon, Popcorn, or Garland?
of the three, garland. food on my tree for as long as i want it up just sounds like a bad idea & i associate the ribbon with the previously-mentioned bows, so that's not for me either. i really like strings of beads as opposed to traditional garland though.
Gifts: Wrapping Paper or Gift Bags?
they each serve their purpose. i will wrap if the gift can be wrapped, but some items are just not cooperative about that sort of thing, so they get gift-bagged instead.
Better To: Give or Receive?
give give give!!
3 with their own thoughts:
I've wondered about "egg nog" too. The theory I heard is that it's a corruption of "grog," the drink made with rum. "Egg grog," somehow became "egg nog."
Then again I have my own theory that it may be Irish in origin. "Tir na Nog" is a mythical land of the ever-youthful, so perhaps "egg nog" because of its refreshing nature is somehow connected linguistically.
Ooh loved reading these! I hope you don't mind me swiping the "this and that" for my blog... going to do that one soon, very fun!
Merry Christmas!
I like hot chocolate with marshmallows. YUM!
And...I also would rather give than to receive!
Merry Christmas! :)
