Slice of Life: July 31, 2010

I originally had no plans for my Saturday, beyond getting my hair cut, tackling my To Do List & crashing on the couch for some Sox, after a particularly stressful week. However, when my car began misbehaving on Wednesday, I ended up rescheduling my hair appointment, not knowing if I would have a reliable vehicle to make the hour & fifteen minute trek. And then I woke up this morning with an overwhelming urge to play with my camera at Disney. (In retrospect, I think I subconsciously decided I couldn't handle the fretting over the Trade Deadline & what the fate of my favorite player would be, and this may have been my way of forcing myself not to stop at my computer to refresh the news every three minutes. As it turned out, there is *still* no resolution. Of course.) Instead of subjecting myself to the park crowds in high-nineties heat (and complimentary humidity), I decided to wander through a few resort hotels...

Timing.

As I was sifting through my Google Reader today, I happened upon a quote that really appealed to me, Tumbled by a bloggy friend. At the time, I couldn't have possibly seen the foreshadowing.

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.
Rabindranath Tagore

I left work this afternoon. I made my daily stop at the post office to drop the invoices in the mail & to check my PO box. I got back into my car--my car that had worked just fine three minutes prior--and as I shifted into reverse, I felt something wrong. There was this ominous shudder & the engine was unmistakeably rough, the timing on some engine part I will never hope to identify was, without a doubt, very much off. I rolled the car forward again and just sat there for a moment. I don't tend to worry a whole lot anymore. But this? This is one of the few things I dread.

I should point out that I have a love-hate relationship with my car. Despite many reassurances when I signed on a dozen dotted lines that this car would grow on me, well, it's been eight & a half years, and if it's possible, I actually hate it more. Its one redeeming quality: it's been paid off for close to five years now. That & it's stayed running with only a few minor maintenance issues. I am quite aware that I am on borrowed time before something goes very very expensively wrong.

And now...my car is acting undeniably unhappy.

There was a time when I would have made a phone call with much trepidation, unsure of what would answer me. Disdain? Annoyance? Accusation? No answer at all?

But today, I flip open my cell phone without hesitation. I press a couple of buttons. I say "I have a problem... I need some help." And someone comes. There is no harsh edge to his voice, no sigh of exasperation at the inconvenience. Just a calm "I'm on my way."

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.
Rabindranath Tagore

As I sit on his couch while he assesses my car for the cause of its misbehavior, I think back. I think back to the turning point when the cloudy moments first began to give way, not to storms but to beautiful sunset. I recall another time I picked up a telephone & dialed a phone number, a different one, though no less reliable. I said no more than "Please come get me," and through a carefully designed plan that two people had discussed well in advance of my plea for help ("Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phillip - "Sorry Phillip." - grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for this all to blow over." -- Shaun of the Dead), someone came. That was the beginning, really, of my belief being rebuilt that someone would come when I needed help. That no matter the inconvenience, no matter the distance or the time or the reason, someone would be there. We believe these things as children, but as adults, when life teaches us more ruthless lessons, that blind faith no longer springs readily.

As I drove home this evening, I looked up at the sky. It had rained earlier, but now the sky was filled with breaking clouds and the setting sun painted it deep red & rich purple, brilliant orange edged with glowing gold. I haven't seen a sunset that breathtakingly magnificent in years. On any other evening, I would have spent that drive into the sunset longing for my camera. But tonight, I just drove in silent reflection of the timing of that quote finding me on *this* day.

Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.
Rabindranath Tagore

Indeed. A thousand times over.

Right Now: July 27, 2010

Outside my window... it's dark & quiet.

I am thinking... I should go to bed, but that would require the motivation to get up from my couch.

I am thankful for... the end of this West Coast Sox Tour tomorrow. I miss being able to watch a whole game, without the aid of my DVR.

From the kitchen... came some ravioli with ground sausage & tomato sauce, some salad & some garlic bread.

I am wearing... boxers & my big comfy red Red Sox tee. I don't generally sleep in my Sox shirts, but I do when they play late & I can't stay up.

I am creating... a plan. And yes, I am being intentionally vague.

I am going... to Fenway next month! The tickets arrived today, thanks to a most awesome vendor. To say I am excited is such a gross understatement, it is almost laughable.

I am reading... very little since I watch the Sox til I can't keep my eyes open for another moment longer.

I am hoping... to cross some more organizing projects off my list this week.

I am hearing... the sounds of baseball on tv & the quiet tap-tap-tap of my typing.

Around the house... I am seeing more & more little projects I need to tackle. It's the never-ending list.

One of my favorite things... having fun plans to look forward to.

I don't understand... why people play games. It just wastes everyone's time.

I wish... it were Food & Wine Festival time *now* for about six different reasons. Not all of them related to the actual yumminess.

A few plans for the rest of the week... involve more de-cluttering, a hair cut and some general laying low & chilling out.

A picture to share... from my cell phone. It's not the best quality by miles, but nothing beats a sunset over the Seven Seas Lagoon.

Monday Stream of Consciousness: July 26, 2010

I found myself in A Mood on Sunday. If you've had much contact with me at all, I am (annoyingly) positive. I try to find the best spin to give any situation & do my best to keep a good attitude. After what seems like weeks of nothing but negativity from the vast majority of people I come into contact with online, my happy nature finally gave in to the bitter assault. I just couldn't take it anymore. Rather than join them, though, I decided to step back. See, the thing is, I don't *like* to be negative. Sure, I have my moments when I complain or get annoyed. But I don't like to dwell on it. I say my piece & I do what it takes to move on. And I do my best to share a little sunshine when it seems someone is lacking. But Sunday? I had reached.my.limit. I went to church (I hadn't been in a few weeks for various reasons) which always improves my state of mind. I have an hour or so to just be. No contact from the outside world. No interruptions. I can just breathe & re-center. It restores my inner peace. But I didn't stop there. I got home from my usual Sunday errands & tackled some projects--and I avoided all but a small group of people I knew wouldn't threaten my tenuous sense of balance & calm. I cleaned out & re-organized my refrigerator... my freezer... my pantry. I did laundry & put away some belongings that had been left straggling about my home. I flipped through some magazines so I could add them to my recycling basket. When I am stressed, clutter adds to my tension. So I clean. And while I keep my hands busy with tasks, my subconscious works on the mental clutter. I tidy up, file away, toss what isn't needed--figuratively & literally. I needed that. I managed to get my Mood Threat Level from red down to orange. Which means I remained on guard but was out of the danger zone of being totally sucked down by others. By this morning, I was safely to Mood Threat Level: yellow, protecting my mood but not to the point of isolation. My optimistic nature may seem relentless constant, but even I have my limits...and I am not afraid to protect my mood when I need to, even if it means the friend who is always there to pick everyone up & dust them off & listen & fill their glass back to half full has to downgrade availability to "almost always." Someone has to keep my well from running dry, even if it means I have to be that someone, looking out for myself.

It Crossed My Mind: July 23, 2010

**I know many women who go through four dresses and/or six pairs of shoes when getting ready in the morning. Me? I tried on three Sox shirts before settling on the one I wanted to wear today. I'm holding onto my Girl Card. But just barely.

**Sometimes it hits me again, out of nowhere, just how awesome my life is, how filled to brimming with blessings that I cannot possibly deserve, and it makes it hard to breathe. That level of gratitude is a "burden" I will gladly bear.

**I was a hurtin' puppy last night. I just could not stay awake for another West Coast 10pm start. Well, I was there for the start. Just not past the third inning or into the 13th. I drifted off, wearing my Pedey t-shirt & my present-for-every-single-game Believe bracelet. It appears that while I slumbered, the Red Sox bullpen once again conspired to take a respectable lead & turn it into a soul-crushing loss. I'm glad that the Red Sox bats refused to go silently into that good night, because *man* did we need a win.

**I may never be caught up on my Google Reader again. I'm still trying. So if you can't remember the last time I commented on your blog, I apologize, but I *am* reading, just very (very) far behind, and silently. Sorry.

**Sometimes I think too much.

**I forgot to bring the mayo for my lunch today. That chicken sandwich would have been mighty dry, if it weren't for someone willing to grab some for me when she goes out to get her own lunch today. Whew. Crisis averted. (My problems are monumental, huh?)

**In relation to my second point, I look at how amazing my life is, how lucky I am...and then I look around me. It seems as though there are heavy clouds surrounding so many people who are important to me. I don't know how to help. I don't know how to ease the weight for them. I almost feel guilty for having so much wonderful & being so cheerful when they have to work hard just to paste on a smile. The only thing I can do is try to shine a little of my sunshine through the clouds until they have their own again. But it's so difficult to watch people you care about hurting.

**I do not like being told that I must like every guy who puts on a Red Sox uniform, simply because he wears our laundry, or I'm a bad fan. It doesn't work that way. I was likely the only Sox fan *anywhere* who didn't hate Eric Gagne long before he made his exit. So if there's a player in Boston that I just don't care for? I'm pretty sure I've paid my dues. I don't boo my team (ever, not even Lugo) & I appreciate every contribution made by any guy on our roster. But that does not mean I am an not entitled to lack affinity for a particular player or not really care if he finds himself putting on a different uniform in the future. Even if he might be a really nice guy in his street clothes.

**I've gone back in time & have been re-watching some old school Grey's. Popped in my DVDs of Season One a couple of weeks ago. Just finished Season Two. I'm really enjoying the bonus features too. I usually forget they exist on tv show season DVDs. I've found some great interviews, a tour of Seattle Grace & some unreleased scenes. And that's just in two seasons! I love me some Grey's. Even when it makes me cry.

**I should point out that I haven't loved a show *this* much since Friends. That's saying something. There are plenty I really enjoy a lot, but very few are deemed Forever Favorites.

**Today is my official six year anniversary for my job. (I have an unofficial anniversary because I started here as a temp in April. I wasn't made permanent until July.) Six. Years. That both impresses me (longest time I've been with a single employer) and worries me (I have an infamous history of "expiring" after six years in...other life situations).

**I mentioned, earlier this week, that I happened upon a preview of the menus for this year's Epcot Food & Wine Festival. I may or may not have already started my list of things I want to try. Maybe I should point out: It doesn't start til October 1.

**I love daydreams. The "What If" game. Only good.

Right Now: July 22, 2010

Outside my window... it looks pleasant--sunshiny & a slight breeze--but it hides a humid reality & the only air movement are puffs of steamy air.

I am thinking... I sure am a rebel, posting my "scheduled" Tuesday post on Thursday. I live life on the edge.

I am thankful for... opportunities.

From the kitchen... will come very little, but the grill will produce chicken sandwiches & veggie kebabs.

I am wearing... tan capris with embroidered, scalloped edges, a navy t-shirt & some brown sandals.

I am creating... a plan for a super-relaxing weekend. I need one badly.

I am going... to find a nail to re-hang my calendar at work. The pushpin just isn't cutting it.

I am reading... Taste of Home magazine. And discovering some very yummy recipe possibilities.

I am hoping... the Sox rediscovered themselves on the flight to Seattle. It's time to start winning again.

I am hearing... the hum of conversation in the office behind mine.

Around the house... are piles, demanding organization. I'm going to try to listen to them this weekend. The clutter is weighing on me.

One of my favorite things... is realizing how amazing my life is.

I don't understand... the thought process of some people.

I wish... it were closer to Epcot's Food & Wine Festival. I happened upon a menu preview & I really want to start tasting.

A few plans for the rest of the week... include hanging out at home, going out to dinner on Saturday & tackling my to-do list.

A picture to share...

20 Questions: July 18, 2010

1. What was the last thing you baked?
Hmmm... Some garlic bread, I think. I've been thinking of making some brownies though.

2. Which do you prefer in your hot chocolate: marshmallows or whipped cream?
Either are yummy, but I think the whipped cream has a *slight* edge.

3. What was the last thing you photographed?
The All Star Game!

4. What inspires you?
Everyone always has these lovely, flowery answers to this question, but for me? I just never know how or what or when I will be inspired. Sometimes it's a quote that I stumble upon. Or the perfect balance of light & shadow. Or a bit of music lyrics. Or something I read. I'm never looking for it & sometimes it hits me much later, after a raw thought tumbles around my subconscious for a while. I think anything & everything can inspire me, if it comes across my path at the right time.

5. What kind of weather do you dislike the most?
Torrential rain, if I am trying to drive. Extreme humidity, if I have to be outside.

6. What did you eat for breakfast this morning?
I didn't, which is rare for me. I had some juice & then ate an early lunch when I got home from grocery shopping.

7. When was the last time you caught a train?
Had to have been at Magic Kingdom, though I cannot say when I last rode it. Unless you count the monorail at Orlando International on my way home from California last week.

8. Other than the basics (gas for your car, groceries, bills), what was the last thing you bought for yourself?
I bought a Red Sox Mickey statue at the All Star Game!

9. Name something you aren't.
Routinely negative.

10. What magazines did you read as a child?
Highlights. Humpty Dumpty. National Geographic World. Teen. Seventeen.

11. List three things you did this weekend.
Attended a company picnic. Unpacked from my trip to California. Took several naps.

12. What is your favorite name that starts with the letter C?
Claire.

13. What drink do you typically order when you go out to dinner?
Water. I drink it so often now, that having a beverage with flavor to it makes my food taste funny to me.

14. What is your web browser of choice?
FireFox.

15. Would you ever fight someone over your significant other?
I like to say I would but quite honestly? I'm past that point in my life. I don't want to be with someone who doesn't want to be with me. And if someone wants to be with me, then no advances from another person would require me to fight anyway.

16. What do you find beautiful?
Sunsets & sunrises. Pristine snow. Childlike wonder. Compassion. Autumn foliage against a clear blue sky. Fenway Park lit up at night.

17. Do you need it quiet when you're falling asleep or do you need some kind of noise?
I prefer it to be quiet, but if I am tired enough, I can fall asleep despite just about anything.

18. Do you trust all of your friends?
If I didn't, I wouldn't still be friends with them; they would merely be acquaintances. Trust is not something I take lightly, or grant much of a "pass" on anymore.

19. What really turns you off?
People who are obnoxious, rude, inconsiderate, mean or bitter. Oh & when someone talks like they have a mouthful of marbles.

20. The color purple makes me think of:
Lent. Royalty. The school I attended nursery through grade eight. The Minnesota Vikings.

My nephew being born. Spending some time with my Connecticut Girls. Finding out who Alison is growing (yay, baby girl!).

11) Something I want to remember about this month:
The long months, the ones that drag by & test our will, make the really great ones worth it. Good things aren't as good if we have nothing to contrast them with. That was pretty much the mantra that shoved me through the month of June.

12) A photo I took this month:

Her curls kill me. I would have put her in my pocket & brought her home with me if her mommy would have let me. ;-)

I Want Wednesday: June 16, 2010

**My very favorite, super comfy, strappy silver sandals need to be retired. It kills a little piece of my soul every time I think about it, because let's be honest: I am not a shoe-shopping kind of girl (stop gasping like it's the first time I've confessed that because we both know it isn't) & when I find a pair I love, I get every last penny's worth out of them. I Want to check out these shoes because they *might* fit the bill.

**I Want to sit on my couch & be a big useless lump of lazy.

**I Want it to be July, wherein I will work all of five of the first eighteen days of the month. Need. Break. Badly.

Right Now: June 15, 2010

Outside my window... it's hot. And humid. And hot. Also? There are humongous mosquitoes.

I am thinking... that whoever created Zicam Oral Mist should be given awards & accolades.

I am thankful for... quiet evenings at home.

From the kitchen... come surprises this week. There was no menu planned. There was a lesson learned though: I hate having to think about what's for dinner on short notice.

I am wearing... green capri cargo pants & my big comfy Pedroia stars & stripes Sox t-shirt. I do not match & I do not care.

I am creating... a mountain of tissues because my nose keeps running. I don't feel bad at all though, so I am not complaining.

I am going... to bed early tonight.

I am reading... Deep Drive: A Long Journey to Finding the Champion Within by Mike Lowell with Rob Bradford. I read all but the last half of the final chapter & the epilogue while waiting at the airport & then flying home. Could not stop turning the pages.

I am hoping... the Zicam keeps working.

I am hearing... the end of the baseball game. Man, I missed my Sox this weekend.

Around the house... there are small messes to be tamed. This is why I clean *before* I travel. Because I come home & make messes while I unpack, but the mess is that much smaller since it was clean to begin.

One of my favorite things... laughing with friends.

A few plans for the rest of the week... kick the rest of this (can't even really call it a) cold to the curb, get my hair cut & highlighted which it has needed badly for over a week now, and go out to dinner Friday before watching the Sox game from my usual perch on the couch.

A picture to share... of the not-quite-three-year-old who seriously blew my mind this weekend with how well he can hit. Not just off a tee, but with someone tossing underhand to him. And not little taps but home runs & line drives & grounders. In all directions. And? He switch hits. I kid you not. I'm going to inform Theo that he needs to draft the boy right now. He's going to be the Second Coming of Pedey's Laser Show. Mark my words.

Memory Lane: June 10, 2010

Four years ago today, my brother married my sister-in-law.

Six days ago, they brought a new little life into their family. Just in case there was any doubt that this is my brother's boy (there isn't, but for argument's sake), Memory Lane presents, my brother on the right at a month old, and his son on left.

**I Want this pitcher.

**I think this is the coolest thing ever for storing sugar & I Want it.

**While I'm at it, I Want a new canister to store my flour container too.

**You see that little triangle of white tank top showing behind the pink polo?

I Want to know how it is possible that I got a glob of yogurt to land perfectly perched there in that little space yet I lack the coordination to walk without stumbling or not drop my phone on the ground most days.

**I Want to snuggle this little cuddle bug.

Right Now: June 8, 2010

Outside my window... it's hot & humid. There are some low rumbles of thunder, but no rain.

I am thinking... that I have so much to do & so little motivation to make it happen.

I am thankful for... the safe arrival of my nephew this past Friday night.

From the kitchen... comes meals that require little to no cooking. It's too hot to turn on appliances that generate heat. It's too hot to eat anything hot. Heck, it might actually be too hot to eat. Unless you mean ice cream.

I am wearing... capri pj pants & a tank top.

I am creating... excuses for not getting anything done tonight.

I am going... to bed soon. See? Another excuse.

I am reading... an old issue of Redbook magazine that I didn't get to before.

I am hoping... I make it through the rest of the week.

I am hearing... the steady hum of the air conditioner.

Around the house... are piles that I am avoiding. I will regret this eventually. Like Thursday, when I am preparing to travel. I cannot leave a messy home behind me.

One of my favorite things... is sharp cheddar cheese.

A few plans for the rest of the week... cleaning, packing, flying, celebrating the anniversary of my god daughter's birth, seeing my Connecticut girlies & a whirlwind of other activities associated with being there for a quick couple of days.

A picture to share... of my sweet new nephew.

20 Questions: June 6, 2010

I prefer silver-tone, though gold looks better on me, I suppose.

3. What color are your sheets?
My cotton ones are white. My flannel ones are tan.

Ten years ago... 23 years old... ::going back in the Way Back When Machine:: Ok, got it! I do not allow another (no-authority-figure) adult tell me what to do. I demand the same respect I give.

Nope. I've never really had the desire to go either. Just not my thing, I guess. So many other places I would choose to see over Vegas.

20. How long is your commute?
A little over 9 miles. 15 minutes without traffic. 40 minutes if traffic is at its peak. INSANITY.

Clean Cotton. Sweet Violet. Blue Hydrangea. Garden Sweetpea. Willow Breeze. Ocean Blossom. Sweet Honeysuckle. Drift Away. Midnight Jasmine. Lavender Fields. Blueberry Scone. Vanilla Cupcake. Buttercream.

2) What I am reading this month:
Not much of anything. I am perpetually behind on blogs & magazines, so I've been "decluttering" in those areas.

3) Top three songs I was drawn to:
"Love Like Crazy," Lee Brice. "My Wish," Rascal Flatts. "Falling Slowly," Lee Dewyze & Crystal Bowersox.

4) Movies I saw:

"Vacation Getaway" (CSI: NY): All three CSI season finales were, but this one left me gasping & my heart racing! "The Staircase Implementation (The Big Bang Theory): Friends spoiled me with what may be the best flashback episodes of all time, so I was nervous about Big Bang Theory going down this road. I didn't need to be. I was *not* disappointed! "Team Braverman" and "Lost and Found" (Parenthood): The last two episodes of the season made me laugh. And cry. And impatiently wait for next season.

8) Something i am thankful for:
The opportunity to grow up with strong family roots. My family is extensive, on my Dad's side, and most of my relatives put down their own roots very close to my hometown. I grew up right in the middle of many of them. There were at least a dozen relatives within walking distance of my grandparents' home. I knew each of them by name. One of these relatives--the wife of one of my Dad's numerous cousins--passed away on May 11. I have many wonderful memories of Laurel. She was one of my favorite relatives, always laughing & friendly & smiling. And while I am sad that those of us who remain here have had to say goodbye, I know that she is in a far better place now. I am thankful for having such a large family, for the chance to get to know so many of them, even if I haven't seen them in quite a while, and for all the wonderful memories I can call to mind.

9) A goal I had for this month:
To survive. I'm not kidding. I need a vacation badly. Running on fumes here.

10) This month I looked forward to:
The opening of S&TC2. And Sox-Rays with Brandi.

11) Something I want to remember about this month:
My life isn't always "boring." Sometimes it runs me ragged. It's then that I truly appreciate how it's usually uneventful.

12) A photo I took this month:

Mike Lowell (second from the left) talking the ear off of anyone who dared to stand next to him. After he finished in the dugout, he moved to the bullpen.

Sometimes it really isn't whether you win or lose, but how you play the game.

If you're a baseball fan, you no doubt heard about--if you didn't see it yourself--the bad call that cost Tigers' pitcher, Armando Galarraga, a perfect game this evening. My initial reaction was outrage, born of frustration with the rash of abysmal officiating of baseball games in recent years. As the night has worn on, I've given it some additional thought.

I feel badly for Galarraga. Though he will know in his heart that he notched himself a perfect game (plus one out), he won't get the notation on his official record. I felt badly for him right from the split second I realized that safe call had been unjustly made. Even if (big if) MLB awards him a perfect game retroactively, the rush of the moment will be gone. He won't celebrate on the field with his teammates with his heart racing & his face feeling as though the grin will crack it wide open.

But I feel equally bad for the umpire. Jim Joyce has been one of the better umpires in the game, at least in my limited recollection. He isn't a name I curse on a regular basis, of that I am certain. And tonight, he made a horrible call. And my gut knew that the minute he saw the replay, he'd feel physically ill. Despite the baseball purist I tend to be, I can't help wishing Joyce had at least had the option, given the circumstances, to say he'd like to see a replay to back his call, while the game was still live.

A few minutes ago, I saw that he had, in fact, seen the replay once he was off the field. I give him a lot of credit for openly admitting: "I don't know what to do, I cost that kid a perfect game." He went on to say that before seeing the replay, he believed the runner was safe, but that if he had been in the pitcher's shoes, he would have gotten up in his face over that call...yet Galarraga never said a single word. In fact, Galarraga's only reaction was a somewhat disbelieving smile, a shake of his head & getting set to face the next batter.

Jim Joyce feels awful. He's sorry. He made a mistake and he owns it. That's all I can ask of another human being. I truly feel awful for him right now. As bad as for Galarraga. Tomorrow, Galarraga will continue to have the sympathy of many. Tomorrow, Joyce has to step back out on that same field to call the final game of that series, where he will likely spend the game booed, heckled and ridiculed. He is a man, flesh & blood, like every one of us...and no one feels worse than he already does. I can't imagine the helplessness and regret weighing on his chest right now.

What strikes me is the compassion shown by Galarraga, who quietly stated that he feels worse for Jim Joyce than about the outcome of the game, that nobody is perfect, and that he hugged Joyce after the game ended. The humble spirit of a man "wronged," with more concern for the well-being of the man who "wronged" him than for his own personal losses. I am shamed when I think of all the opportunities I have had to react in that manner and most decidedly have *not*.

Jim Joyce, I admire the humility with which you accepted responsibility without excuse or shrugging it off. It takes a big man to own his mistakes, and you are a lesson in how we should act when we make them, which we *all* do, yet not many of us with open emotional acceptance as you have. You apologized with great remorse on camera, and you took Galarraga aside & expressed your deep regret to him personally. You haven't made an enemy of *every* baseball fan...and I suspect I do not stand alone. It's easy for us, watching on our televisions, with instant replay from multiple angles and with slow motion, to say a call was a no-brainer, but the fans don't stand in your shoes, making calls in real time, without the benefits of those tools--and you aren't notorious for making bad calls at an alarming rate. Yours is a job I would not want to have, but thank you for doing your part to make a game I love enjoyable & fair. I hope I can show even half the grace you have in accepting my much smaller, far less scrutinized mistakes on a daily basis.

Armando Galarraga, you may not have a perfect game noted in your stats, but you have shown up a large number of people with the class you exhibited tonight, in the face of deep disappointment. Very few professional athletes have my deep respect anymore, but you have rocketed to the top of my list. You are a stand-up human being, and I tip my cap to you. Please take a seat next to Mike Lowell. I'll not forget your name, but it won't be for what you were denied. It will be for the way you rose above and showed yourself to be a fine young man, when very few others would have, and no one would have judged you for it if you'd reacted differently. The recognition you deserve tonight far exceeds what you accomplished with a baseball and your pitching arm.

20 Questions: May 30, 2010

1. Have you ever built a snowman?
I have but mostly small ones. I think I only successfully constructed one "life-size" one. This obviously took place quite a while ago. I wonder if I would be any better at it now?

2. Do you trust your instincts?
More now than ever before. And when I don't, it sure seems like I live to regret it. My gut is far wiser than I give it credit for being sometimes.

3. Can you sew?
On a basic level. I can replace buttons & mend a seam. I can kind of do a hem, but not well. I'd like to learn more though.

4. What kind of system do you have for keeping tracking of your bills?
It's complex when you're on the outside looking in but it makes perfect sense to me. I build a baseline budget for the full year, making adjustments as necessary. I track all my spending. It keeps me honest & true to my budget.

5. Do you have any rings on your hands?
Not a single one. I think I've owned three rings in my entire life. One my brother tangled with & I think he still holds a grudge. One stopped being "my style." The last one I gave back.

6. Name someone in your life with blue eyes:
Other than me? ::bats eyelashes:: My dad.

7. When did you last see the sun rise?
This very morning. I woke up around 4am for some reason & couldn't shut off my brain.

8. What is the last thing you wrote?
I filled out a check to pay my rent.

9. If you could change one thing about your home, what would it be?
It would have a bigger kitchen with better storage & a place for a table.

10. Can you remember your childhood phone number?
Yes, I can. And my grandparents' as well.

11. Do you feel in control of your life?
As in control as I need to be.

12. What was the last thing you put in your mouth?
Publix Raspberry Blush Sherbet.

13. What beverage do you reach for in the morning?
Real unsweetened cranberry juice that I mix half-and-half with either pineapple juice or 100% apple juice.

14. Would you rather be really hungry or really tired?
Really tired. When I'm really hungry, I get cranky. I don't like to be cranky. Unless I have to drive. Then I would rather be hungry because driving tired scares me.

15. What piece of jewelry do you wear most often?
Probably my cross necklace.

16. What three items can always be found in your refrigerator?
The aforementioned cranberry juice. Water. Yogurt.

17. How old is your computer?
My desktop is a refurb that I got almost four years ago. My laptop was new, a birthday gift, about a year & a half ago.

18. Who do you look the most like in your family?
I think I'm a pretty good blend of both my parents, which means if I see myself next to either one in a photo, I can see the common features, but when I'm on my own, I look like neither one.

19. Were you afraid of the dark as a child?
Only if I found myself outside by myself. I had a vivid imagination & could easily psyche myself out. My Gram's frequent warnings of some creature she called a jackyl contributed to this, I think. Most likely because I couldn't conjure up an actual image of what this thing might be. Fear of the unknown is far more powerful than fear of the known. If I had to run out to the car for something I forgot, I would scurry & throw furtive looks over my shoulders.

20. What is your favorite flavor of pudding?
I *love* vanilla pudding.
