from a celebratory, semi-drunk Mike Lowell, when asked, during the festivities after clinching a playoff berth, what it would take for the Red Sox to win another championship:
"We need to hit. We need to pitch. And hopefully have more runs on than them after nine innings."
ever the wise veteran, Mikey.

Mike Lowell, intoxicated on champagne, beer & getting to the playoffs. this is the stuff a girl's dreams are made of.

1. what are your favorite TV programs? how long have you been watching them?
Boston Legal (starting my fourth season; missed the first one). Fringe (since it started three weeks ago). Grey's Anatomy (two years but i've since caught up on all the episodes i missed; fourth season just started). Private Practice (one season, the first one; the second starts this week). Ghost Whisperer (three seasons, since it started; the fourth one starts in October). Dexter (i saw the first season; the third just started & i recorded it but i need to get my hands on season two first!). Friends (i started watching it midway through the second season and watched til the end, but i've since seen every episode multiple times). Sex & the City (i've seen all the episodes but didn't start watching them until they were syndicated).
2. what's your favorite snack while watching tv?
i don't really snack much while i watch tv, but if i do get snacky, it could be anything from cheese & crackers to Wheat Thins to popcorn to a cookie to ice cream.
3. who's your tv crush?
hmmm... can Mike Lowell count? (Boston Red Sox third baseman, for those of you who don't know--and if you don't know: welcome to the blog because you obviously haven't been here more than about ten minutes!) i watch him on tv!
4. where's your favorite place to watch tv?
the couch. mine usually, occasionally another one.
5. name a tv show you wish would go off the air.
Survivor. OMG please just stop.
6. name a tv show that is no longer on the air, but you really wish they would bring back.
Cane. it started last season, i really enjoyed it & then the writers' strike killed it.
7. have you ever purchased any tv program collectables?
do season DVDs count? because i have Friends, S&TC, Grey's Anatomy & Private Practice. i also have a book from S&TC. that's it though.
so, unless you are the Twins or the White Sox (and by default, the Tigers, whose final record has not be set it stone), your 2008 baseball season fate has been determined. seven teams are headed into October. the rest are heading to the golf course.
among those seven teams, possessing the AL Wild Card, are my Boston Red Sox. for the fifth time in six years, my boys are playoff-bound. and by no small miracle this year, what with the likes of Julio Lugo (pre-quad-injury) pretending to be a Major League Shortstop, the self-destructing bullpen (only minus the warning countdown, just BOOM! right in your face, like some kind of practical joke), and the revolving door to the Disabled List.
early last week, the Red Sox clinched their playoff berth, and while it wasn't with the pomp & circumstance of a division title, and at times, it was downright *ugly*, here they are. it was pretty clear that with something like 98.3% odds in favor of the Tampa Bay Sunbeams Rays (Papi says we have to respect them now but still: ?!?) that the Red Sox would assume their customary Wild Card role. so on the evening of their clinched playoff spot, they celebrated. they jumped around & wore goggles & sprayed champagne. they rejoiced in making it to the next level.
and the following evening on ESPN, i was astounded to hear... *criticism*.
how dare they? how dare those Red Sox celebrate something as menial as the Wild Card gaining them admittance to the post season? how utterly classless. don't they realize they are defending World Champions and the Wild Card is a more a failure than an accomplishment?
WHAT?!
i've thought about this for several days now, wondering if there would be some clarity that would awaken in my mind as to why anyone would feel this way. maybe i am in the minority here, i don't know, but... when a team succeeds in reaching the post season, something only eight teams in all of baseball (thirty teams!) will accomplish, i *want* to see celebration. i want to see joy & enthusiasm. i want to see childlike excitement (albeit with adult beverages being used as a prop).
and, of course, i want it to be my team with a reason to celebrate, but above and beyond that, i want to see whichever teams get there excited, thrilled to the point of dancing, whooping with utter joy. even if it's a team i don't particularly care for.
why? because i would rather see a team excited to be there. no matter how many times they've been there before. the moment there is a lack of celebration in achieving a pass to this next level, i see it as complacency. and even if it's one of those teams that cause me to say "i am a Red Sox fan and a fan of whichever team is playing against [insert loathed team name here]," i would find an apathetic lack of celebration to be far more offensive. we all want our teams to get there. so few actually do. to act as though you've been there so many times that it's gotten old, when there are so many who would give anything to be there, seems unforgivable.
and here we are, critical of a team who celebrated because they reached the next step toward the Fall Classic. yet, somehow, i suspect that had they not rejoiced, they would have been spoken of just as harshly. that absolutely blows my mind. so what that they have been there before? so what that they are celebrating "just the Wild Card" when a year ago they were kings of the AL East? will winning the World Series taste less sweet to arrive there via the Wild Card? what about the guys for whom this is unprecedented? the Jason Bays and Justin Mastersons and Jed Lowries who has never been here before? do they not deserve to celebrate because the teams before them got this far or farther? is there a limit on the number of times you can be excited to be there?
(Boston Globe)
the fact is, this never gets old. certainly not for me and, i hope, not the baseball players i watch all Sping and Summer. i hope i never see the day the Boston Red Sox are ok with merely tipping their caps to the fans as they exit the field the night they are assured a chance to play beyond the regular season.

ps. dear Josh Beckett: no no no no no. no being hurt *now*. this is October & the Sox minus Commander Kickass is *not* an option. we clear on that?
on three of my four fantasy football teams, i have Brett Favre as one of my QBs.
Brett Favre, listed as "questionable" with a bad ankle.
Brett Favre who is still considered to be in his adjustment phase with the Jets.
Brett Favre of the SIX touchdown passes.
now, i ask you: where do you think he was on my roster on ALL. THREE. TEAMS??

Friday Fill-in #91
1. cooler weather, Red Sox post-season games and using my Disney Pass more often again (thanks to said cooler weather) are some of the things I'm most looking forward to in October.
2. Sometimes I wish i had a crystal ball. or a time machine.
3. i once swore i would never live anywhere outside of New England but here i am in Florida and that's why there is a saying, "never say never"!
4. When I'm down, I get even quieter than usual.
5. at home is where you'll find me most often.
6. A rainy day is good for snuggling up on the couch to watch a movie.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to another Red Sox win (hopefully no rain) & if we're lucky, another Rays loss in Detroit, tomorrow my plans include DISNEY!!! and Sunday, I want to relax while watching some baseball & football!
Angels/Yankees game at Angel Stadium:
our seats in foul ball central (right at the right field foul pole):
this appears to be a photo of Vlady (Vladdie?) but it's *really* a photo of the Sox/Rays score. in case you can't see it: 3-0 Boston: Final. ;-)
FIGHT!!!! (ok ok... but MILLING AROUND!!! just doesn't have the same ring... there *was* pushing & shoving though. Molina elbowed Hunter, Hunter gave Molina a hearty shove in response.)
hypothesis proven: when taking a photo that includes oneself, the holder of the camera always looks the goofiest! this photo still makes me happy. =)

what. is with. the crap call. against Boston?!
OMG. seriously.
there was the call in Boston vs Tampa when the fan touched the ball & Mike Lowell was called out. (that's one.)
and then in Tampa ,not one but TWO Rays were awarded first base for being hit by a pitch--one that actually ricocheted off the base of the bat & the other that landed between the feet of the batter, who when questioned by his first base coach if he was hit, said "naw." (that's two and three.)
not to mention the foul pop Youk caught that hit one of the ropes or trapezes or whatever the heck hangs from the ceiling of the Juice Box (thank you Tony Massarotti for that one) which meant apparently the ball was dead instead of recording an out? (four, for those of you keeping score.)
fast forward to last night & we find Beckett hit three Indians. not only was Garko leaning out over the plate with his fully armoured arm & very little effort to get out of the way, but the third batter didn't even appear to get hit at all! i couldn't even see it on replay! i just have to say that when a team leads the league in being hit-by-pitch by a considerable amount, maybe, just maybe they are contributing in some way, like, oh... not making a decent effort to get out of the way?? (five. or more. depending on your interpretation.)
and then the coup de grâce: what should have been one, possibly two runs, on a hit up the third base line, hit the umpire. and instead of being a dead ball, it resulted in Bay getting caught in a jam, ending the inning. and ultimately the Sox lost 4-3. but it could have been a tie game. or even a 5-4 Sox win. (six.)
i am imagining all the moaning & whining by the tv broadcast crew if this had happened to the Sunbeams...
the only call i remember going in our favor (though, admittedly, there may have been more) was Overbay being called out when he was in fact safe.
but for Pete's sake! how many freak occurrences & bum calls can go against one team?! and just how much poor officiating will it take before something is done? perhaps if MLB took things as seriously as the NFL... just as Ed Hochuli about *that*. (for those of you non-football fans, he made one bad call & now he has a big black mark on his report card; he will likely get demoted from being the crew chief; will not be considered for the crews that work in the post season; and could potentially lose his job--and all this after being one of the highest rated NFL referees.)
but mostly i'm wondering when the Red Sox fell under The Curse* of the Bizzaro Baseball Calls??
*the curse part? that was tongue-in-cheek. just so we're clear. ;-)
"According to baseball philosophy, the best players always play in the middle of the field, from the catcher out to center field. It is as if an axis were drawn directly down the middle of the diamond. That line pierces the pitcher's mound and second base, the center of the infield, which is shared by two players: the shortstop and the second baseman. The latter of those two players is generally considered less important, which leaves the shortstop as the most important infield position outside of the catcher and, of course, the pitcher."
(Tony Massorotti, "Dynasty")
(a shadowy image, somewhat resembling the author of this blog, is seen slipping silently out of sight, with the suggestion of concealed baseball bat bearing only the inscription "E6" held close to its body... and not a bat intended for stepping into anything resembling a batter's box...)
to say nothing of the second coming of last year's "defense".
if the Sox weren't deep in the heat of a division pennant race with one week remaining in the regular season, i might be considerably more disappointed that *that* may have been one of the only Patriots games i may see this season.
then again, if they're going to look the way they did yesterday more often than not, perhaps that is a blessing in disguise.
(is it too early to start calling this The Lost Season? how about for calling on Jeff Garcia?)

we'll start off with some Disney's California Adventure. how about that?
here are some of my personal favorites...
and a link to the complete album...
1. photos from vacation - including, but not limited to, Disneyland and an Angels game.
2. photos from Monday night's trip to see the Sox play in Tampa - i love Sox wins (super glad i went Monday & not Tuesday, tonight still remains to be seen). i love Sox homers. i love seats that are practically *on* the field. i do NOT love the lighting in that God-forsaken pit dome that drains me of all my life forces & makes it nearly impossible to get a nice clear photo of pretty much anything.
just need to do a bit more editing. bear with me. there are *many* photos...
"I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time."

the question of the day is:
will Dawn survive the mental trauma of seeing Matsuzaka pitch live tonight?! something that is scary enough on tv, never mind up close & personal...
stay tuned.
Give Me Five Monday #34
Give Me Five of your favorite breakfast foods.
1. yogurt & a granola bar.
2. fresh fruit.
3. Special K Red Berries with just enough milk to moisten it but not enough to make it soggy. ;-)
4. waffles!
5. scrambled eggs & toast.
recent weeks have held any combination of frustrating games, horrific officiating and those games that the Sox offense is a raging inferno leaving their opponent little more than a pile of ashes.
and that doesn't even touch the insanity that was Saturday's second game of a twin bill against the recently surging Jays.
take, for instance, the way the first two Sox runs score: Ellsbury walks. Pedroia doubles, moving Ellsbury to third. and somehow on a wild pitch, *both* of them manage to cross the plate.
and then there is the fact that Bartolo Colon's start was brought to you by the number 5: he had a meltdown that resulted in a FIVE-run second. then in the FIFTH inning, Rios hits a ball back at Colon, who has his back to home plate, the ball kicks up off his heel & pops right into his glove & he tosses it to first to end the FIVE-pitch inning.
the Sox spent all but the first inning, trailing Toronto. they slowly wittled away the gap but i just didn't believe they could climb all the way back. the last few weeks have made me rather cynical for some reason.
and then: Ellsbury chops one just to the first-base side out in front of home plate & the Jays pitcher falls on face trying to get to it, allowing the go-ahead run to score in eighth.
icing on the cake: Papelbon manages to come in and not only *not* blow the save but produce that elusive 123 ninth inning. (/sarcasm)
strange, strange turn of events in this game.
somehow Sox come behind from a 5-2 deficit to win 7-5 *and* though the Yankees almost mess up their late-game rally, coming from behind 4-1 to be up 6-4 going into their own closing situaton, giving up a ninth inning run, they manage to hold on for a 6-5 win.
so after picking up a soggy half game Friday & yesterday's pair of doubleheaders ending up a wash, the Sox are two back from first with Lester facing a 3-day-rested Halladay in 90 minutes--about the best possible way to face Halladay, in my opinion. Edwin Jackson & Carl Pavano square off in the Bronx, making it anybody's game. i'm rooting for whatever gives the Sunbeams a loss...
to say things just.got.interesting is a gross understatement.
i ate my dinner with chopsticks last night.
for real.
which doesn't sound like a big deal until you factor in how utterly uncoordinated i am.
the fact that food made it into my mouth at all still amazes me completely.

4. i have moved forward with my life & started to feel like myself finally but I'm dealing with a memory that never forgets.
5. I'm the innocent bystander / Somehow I got stuck with the blame for something i didn't do.
6. What's keeping us apart isn't selfishness, but fear of taking the risk.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to spending time with my friends, tomorrow my plans include whatever is on the itinerary provided by my wonderful host & hostess and Sunday, I want to enjoy whatever plans are in store for me!

quiet. observant. loyal.
Recipe for this Week (instead of your recipe for life - what is it for just this week?)
take a deep breath & relax.
hosted by Cinn's Friday 5
doing the lumberjack
[01] What is currently big news in your area?
tropical weather. to the point that it gets rather annoying.
[02] If there was a fire in your home, do you have a planned escape route?
seen as how i have only two windows & one door (which happen to be next to one of the windows), the options are limited. yes, i have a plan: go out the closest one.
[03] Is there something part of your routine that you do daily without fail?
not counting the obvious hygeine-related ones, i check my email every single day, internet-allowing.
[04] When did you last jump rope? Hula-hoop? Hop-scotched?
jumped rope: probably 15 years ago. hula-hooped: assuming you mean successfully, that'd be never because i am just not that coordinated. hop-scotched: also probably about 15 years ago, in the elementary school playground behind my house.
[05] Did you watch any of the DNC or RNC?
a little of each.
and catching up on last week's...
you said the brains I had went to my head
[01] What to you is significant of September?
something i don't much like to talk about. September has been known to be a tough month for me, although the last few have been better.
[02] What did you look forward to when starting a new school year?
new school supplies!
[03] If given a choice between the two, would you rather teach math or science?
i would have to pick science since there is at least a *chance* that i could teach something. math would be a lost cause & education should *help* children, not make them less competent.
[04] If you were given a full scholarship to return to college this fall, what would you choose to study?
i have absolutely *no* idea. something related to photography? history? a foreign language?
[05] What teacher did you have a crush on?
if you saw the teachers i had, you would understand why that just made me laugh right out loud.
Orange
1. What’s your favorite orange-colored food?
carrots.
2. What’s the best way to drink orange juice?
cold, without pulp.
3. Which candy’s orange-colored pieces taste best?
M&Ms. =P don't care much for orange flavored anything.
4. What are your feelings about orange soda?
loved it as a kid. too sweet now. about the only soda i drink is ginger ale for an upset stomach or Pepsi if i desparately need a caffeine boost.
5. When did you last wear an orange item of clothing?
hmmm... long enough that i cannot remember it! i don't own much orange lately, which is odd because some shades of orange look good with my hair/skin tone.
yes, i'm a bit late with this one. i'm on vacation. that's my excuse for everything this week. =P
Ten Things You Didn't Like About School
1. homework.
2. taking the bus.
3. required reading -- it's funny, books i was supposed to read in school but skimmed at best, i read later of my own free will and *loved*. i hate to be told i *have* to read something.
4. anything related to math.
5. or science.
6. the drama associated with being in high school.
7. gym class. blech.
8. peer pressure -- either you got sucked in by it & ended up in trouble, but it meant you were one of the cool kids...or you didn't & you were labelled a dork. (bet i don't have to tell you which category i fell under.)
9. the fact that no one was truly themselves (as if we had any clue who we were anway).
10. public speaking/oral presentations.
The most important thing in life is family. There are days you love them, and others you don't, but in the end, they're the people you always come home to. Sometimes it's the family you're born into... and sometimes it's the one you make for yourself.
(Carrie Bradshaw on Sex & the City)
photo of me: sadly i still do not exist. perhaps i am only a figment of your imagination...?
1) current candle scents: Island Spa and Honeydew Melon.
2) what i am currently reading: "Something Borrowed" by Emily Giffin.
3) newest music i added my playlist: nothing new this month. i was busy organizing what i have already, removing duplicates (ripped from CDs) & songs i can't figure out why i liked in the first place.
4) movies i saw: "No Reservations" -- predictable but good chick flick. "First Knight" -- an old favorite. free HBO & Showtime for a year is a nice little perk for my recent Bright House inconvenience!
5) something yummy i made this month: i made a really yummy pasta dish with spinach & sausage.
6) the last place i ate out: ummm... Macaroni Grill, i believe.
7) something that made me cry: no crying! i win!
8) something that made me laugh: Nick Markakis standing in the Fenway outfield eating sunflower seeds while the Orioles intentionally walked Big Papi.
9) something i looked forward to this month: weekends. i've been very burned out at work & i have literally been living to get to the next weekend.
10) something i am thankful for: the opportunity to help & encourage my friends the way they have done for me. not that i wish trying circumstances on them by any means, but since that cannot be stopped, i am thankful that i can offer them in return the kind of support they have always given me.
11) something i want to remember about this month: how Jason Bay, in his Sox debut, came in after all the drama & was the anti-Manny (in all the right ways: a humble professional to undo the tension), getting on base in four of six at bats--2 walks, hit by a pitch and a 12th inning two-out triple that would lead to crossing the plate as the winning run on a Jed Lowrie infield hit. welcome to Boston, Jason Bay. we're happy to meet you.
12) a photo i took this month:
That night, I started to think about belief. Maybe it's not even advisable to be an optimist after the age of thirty. Maybe pessimism is something we have to start applying daily like moisturizer. Otherwise, how do you bounce back when reality batters your belief system and love does not, as promised, conquer all? Is hope a drug we need to go off of? Or is it keeping us alive? What's the harm in believing?
