i smell a...

...trip to Yankee Candle coming on in my very near future! new Autumn fragrances! familiar favorite Autumn scents! the only problem is that i used to be able to hit up the flagship store at the start of each new season. the little dinky stores at the mall just don't cut it. sure, they have all the jarred candles, but what i miss is the huge room with row after row filled with unwrapped Samplers... and the votives are what i like to buy, because it lets me sample a variety of scents & change frequently, instead of committing to a whole big jar. (and also, i am not forcing myself to pick only one or two scents in jar form, when i can try more for my money with the votive size! you know how bad i am with decisions by now, right? LOL!)

i am especially intrigued by these four new scents. i am a sucker for anything apple-spicy, so Cider Donut and Fall Festival sound like they could be delicious. Autumn Woods bears a sniff. and my Gram used to make what she called Magic Bars, but they looked exactly like the picture on Coconut Cookie Bar.

my perennial Autumn favorites need restocking. Apple Cider... Warm Apple Crisp... Farmhouse Apple... (i *told* you i love all thing apple-spicy!) and Cranberry Chutney is the perfect blend of sweet & tart.

i'm torn between these though. Spiced Pumpkin is the original, and a definite signature Autumn scent. then they came out with Pumpkin Pie, and it just did not impress me. Frosted Pumpkin makes me wonder though... will it be a new addition? or a let-down, like i found Pumpkin Pie...?

whatever happened to predicability...?

it showed up at Fenway Park Wednesday night, that's what.

i watched in an almost numb resignation as Lestah melted down before the game barely started. 4-0 after half an inning. even Matsuzaka manages to wait til at least the third inning. the Yankees score provided no solace. and Youk worried me for a minute when he argued a bad (in my opinion) strike out call, because he was covering third base tonight for a Mike Lowell with a very angry tummy, and we couldn't afford to have him tossed, justifiable argument or not.

the Sox stranded a base runner here, two there. despite a three-run Papi shot to right field in the third, the Sox still trailed by a run.

and they trailed.
and they trailed.
and they stranded runners.

Julian replaced Lestah in the fourth. and like a good little Julian, got the job done, not allowing any more runs to cross the dish over his three innings of service.
MDC elicited a mild wash of panic when i saw him take the mound in the seventh with one on & two out, but he also held off the Rays from causing further damage.
Oki was okie dokie, K-ing someone named Carl Crawford to end the eighth.

and they still trailed.
and they stranded more runners.
and they went down 1-2-3 in the eighth.
flying out.
swinging strike out.
caught looking.

Jon came in. non-save situation, but he did what Jon does.
sit down, please.
all hail The Cheerio Mouth.

bottom of the ninth.
Reyes has only two blown saves this season. (great.)
he walks Lugo. (i'm pacing hard.)
Pedroia Pocket flies out. (i groan & continue to wear a path in my carpet.)

and then, as Daniel is my witness, i change my Gmail status to say (we were "watching" together, exchanging commentary via Gmail status messages):
c'mon Papi... give us just one walk off home run this year...

ball.
ball.
foul.
ball.

and then Papi's bat thundered. in a way we haven't seen this whole season. i don't enjoy going into the bottom of the ninth, losing, but i can tell you that the jumping going on in my living room matched that of the group that awaited The Big Man as he lumbered home.

(photo from Yahoo Sports)

a day of rest to prepare for the arrival of the pinstriped nemesis. but they roll into town five games back, and we get the scariest match up over with on Friday: Matsuzaka & Pettitte. then comes the battle of the 18-win Cy Young candidates on Saturday: Beckett & Wang. and we wrap up Sunday with a game of which old wind bag will get tired first: Schill (but he's our wind bag & we love him) & Rog-ah (love to hate him).

get out your Sox gear. practice all your crazy superstitious Sox rituals.

this division race isn't done yet.

who said baseball wasn't exciting?! every nail-biting second of it, baby.

the surfacing of a random memory

preface: relax if you're not a baseball fan. i mention the Red Sox but it's not about that, i promise.

i listened to the Red Sox game online tonight. the radio broadcast. it was a pleasant change of pace to hear Joe Castiglione call the game. i love Remy & Don, but this took me back in time...

when i was a kid, we would often be in the car while the Sox were playing. Dad would tune into our local station, WTIC 1080 AM. i remember when it used to be Ken Coleman alongside Joe Castiglione. i remember their voices, and how Dad hated Roger Clemens even then.

but that wasn't the only time WTIC 1080 was playing in the car.

every weekday morning, Dad would load Josh & me into the car, in the early pre-dawn hour, for the ten-minute drive to Gram & Gramp's house, so he could head to work knowing we were well-cared for. even when we were no longer small, we still went to Gram & Gramp's house in the morning, had our breakfast, caught the bus to school (because at home, we would have had to walk, and Dad didn't like that). and each morning, the radio would be tuned to WTIC 1080.

i remember the digital tone that used to sound the top of the hour. i don't recall all the names but i can still conjure up the voices of the sports guys (Arnold Dean & Scott Gray), the news girl (Angela Dias), the meteorologist (Joe Furey), the traffic report guy...

but most of all, i remember Bob Steele.

Bob Steele was such a well-spoken, interesting, intelligent man. he believed in good grammar, and in the correct pronunciation and usage of words, so he had a word of the day. he would provide little tidbits about international weather, and other stories he found interesting. he would toss in a corny joke. he would play classical music, big band and the occasional oldie. and in the winter, we lived to hear him make school closure announcements. his warm, grandfatherly voice greeted me each morning. the predictability of that morning show followed me through my entire childhood & beyond my adolescence into early adulthood. he was like a well-known friend.

those were good mornings. comfortable & familiar. day after day. year after year. the seasons cycling through, one after another. fresh spring mornings. summer mornings, with the sunrise beginning to burn off the fog. crisp exhilarating autumn mornings. cold winter mornings when the heat blasting in the car made me drowsy. it was all so routine back then, but in that cozy way that feels like a warm blanket. i was too young to know that i was building memories i would later look back on, fondly... and sometimes wistfully, with the bittersweet wish that i could go back & revisit them one more time...

take a bad day & make it better

i'm not much of a Beatles fan but if the shoe fits...

anyway.

after the sour feeling the Patriots left me with, i *needed* the Sox to come out and kick around some Rays. you can imagine then, how i felt when the Sox found themselves down 8-1 in the fourth inning.

i'm not going to lie to you.
i shut the game off.
i couldn't take anymore tonight.
i couldn't take a shellacking by the Rays.
and it kills me to see Wake have a bad performance.

around ten, i turned on the tv with the intention of watching something, *anything* but sports.
i almost fell out of my chair.

before i could change the channel, i saw that by some twist of fate, and several small miracles, the game was now tied at nine in the sixth inning, and i turned it on just as Youk's bat was connecting to knock out a loaded-bases-clearing triple to give the Sox a 12-9 lead.

(holy cow. i turned off the tv at 8:30 in the top of the fourth, and an hour & a half later we were only in the bottom of the sixth?!)

i'm not going to say i feel any better about this Patriots mess, but a 16-10 comeback win, from a Sox team not known for its come-from-behind victories in 2007, certainly doesn't hurt.

Lestah tomorrow. let the Sox keep rolling merrily along.

completely disenchanted

some good natured trash-talking between fanbases is to be expected when it comes to sports. we all have teams we love & teams we loathe. provided other fans aren't spewing complete untruths or just being mean-spirited, i can take pretty much anything being said about my favorite teams. let's face it: if you dish it out, you have to take it in return. and i can't ever be accused of making excuses for my teams -- if they perform poorly, i am the first one to acknowledge it, and to give credit where credit is due.

what i can't take is being let down by my team.

something i have always prided the Patriots organization on is their insistence that players act in an appropriate manner, both on & off the field. it seemed petty that people were giving Brady a hard time about his child with Bridget Moynahan when really that was none of anyone's business -- and then all the rampant rumors that he was also expecting a baby with his current girl friend as well, which, it turned out was nothing but bunk. then came the recent suspension of Rodney Harrison for taking HGH. that smarted a little, because i thought New England held its players to higher standards than that. but instead of denying or making excuses, Rodney confronted the situation head on, owned up like a man, apologized sincerely, and accepted his punishment. i was willing to take that, and to frown at the smudge it left, but let's take this lesson & learn from it.

when the season started last Thursday, i took a deep breath & felt like we were ready to put all this nonsense behind us, and just play some football. the Patriots had a great opening day. i found myself feeling that delicious anticipation that comes with the prospect of a very exciting season.

and then yesterday afternoon, the storm hit.

i tried. i tried really hard to believe that my team wouldn't really do this. i mean, what do they have to gain? and they were suspected of this in the past not once, but twice, in Detroit & Green Bay. how dumb do you have to be to try it again? especially with people aware you've been accused before, whether or not anything came from it? they had to know people would be watching. they couldn't possibly be that stupid... could they?

and just now, sitting here in my living room, eating dinner in front of ESPN, they announced it: Commissioner Goodell has decided that the Patriots did, indeed, illegally record the Jets sideline with the intent of picking up signals. the Patriots will now be given a chance to defend their actions & explain their side, before a final determination is made, and possibly penalties handed out.

listen. when i feared the Patriots might suffer through some sort of controversy this season, that fear was directed solely toward the acquisition of Randy Moss. i never in my wildest dreams would have believed -- or could even have conjured up -- the possibility of something this distasteful & classless. and if Belichick knew, if he was involved... let's just say, innocent until proven guilty, however my respect for Belichick is in serious question.

but the bad taste is in my mouth now. i feel like i've been duped into believing they were above this sort of thing. i feel like the Patriots have disgraced themselves. and i am embarrassed for & disappointed in them. they are still my team, but i feel as if they've sold out on me, stealing some of my joy in their deception. and that it will need to be earned back.

i hope they have an explanation that makes this all go away. i hope that more than i can express. but i have to be honest. i don't think there is an explanation. i think they did it. i think they're guilty. and i think there needs to be consequences. i think there should be fines, draft picks taken away, maybe even a coaching suspension if it comes out that Belichick knew about it. and you know what? if the league office says that the win on Sunday should be forfeited, i would be just fine with that too.

because if you know me at all, you know how i feel about dishonesty...

Summer Lovin'... and more

What two things are you going to miss the most about summer:
baseball. light commutes into work (hello annoying school buses!)
What two things annoyed you the most about summer:
the heat. the electric bill caused by the heat.
Name two memorable moments from this past summer:
getting to meet Michelle! and my whole vacation in California, crammed full of happy memories.
Did you go on vacation this summer and if so, where?
see above, please.
Who has more fun during summer: A child or an adult? And why?
as a child. summer as an adult is no different from any other time. you still have to go to work, pay the bills, cook the dinner, do the housework. just further proof that youth is wasted on the young. or something to that effect.

a second meme this week:

Where were you 6 years ago? Explain:
living in Connecticut, working in the office of a car dealership, just meeting my friend Alison, and developing my OCD need for cleanliness thanks to a roommate who was gross to epic proportions. in relation to September 11 though, i was at work. my boss had just called in to say she would be late but was on her way -- and to turn on the tv in the service lounge because a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. i flipped it on just in time to see the second plane hit.
What two major emotions do recall feeling?
stunned. numb.
Who were the first two people you called that day?
i honestly can't remember.
What two words best describes that day for you?
surreal. sobering.
What two major changes in your life has occurred since that day?
i certainly don't feel quite as safe as i used to. and i actually appreciate the measures taken by airport security, so i get annoyed when others complain about having to wait in line & be inconvenienced . wouldn't it be a bigger "inconvenience" to have evil people bringing dangerous items onto the plane?

Where did my weekend go?

Two things you planned to do this past weekend:

laundry. grocery shop. (check. and check.)
Two things you wish you didn’t do this past weekend:
watch Matsuzaka pitch for the Red Sox. clean my bathroom. (ok, i am glad i did that last one, but i hate doing it & wish someone else would do it for me!)
Two things you wish you had done this past weekend:
still been on vacation. won the lottery.
Two people you spent the most time with this past weekend:
LOL! do myself & I count as the other two? i didn't spend time with a single person.
Two words to describe this past weekend:
quiet. productive.

More likely to...

Surprise someone or be surprised? Explain:

be surprised. i *try* to surprise people, and then i slip & say something stupid that gives it away. =P i can keep secrets & not reveal sensitive information, but i cannot seem to plan a surprise that is successful these days.
Cheat or be cheated on? Explain:
be cheated on. no explanation necessary.
Cook or be cooked for? Explain:
cook. if i don't, there's no one else to do it.
Cry or cause someone to cry? Explain:
cry. i don't make other people cry.
Flirt or be flirted with? Explain:
be flirted with, i guess? but only because there's a fractionally small chance of that happening over me actually flirting which i just don't do.

because for the most part it was a good weekend for Boston sports teams

FRIDAY
1. Papi fake-running rounding third top 3rd. ranks right up there with last Sunday, i believe, with the fans bearing signs spelling out Ortiz, bowing in unison in "we're not worthy" fashion.

2. the interview with Julia Ruth Stevens was a pleasure. what a classy lady. finally a good in-game interview, actually worth listening to.

3. and then there was mayhem & madness: obvious balk. Coco scores. almost hit Pedroia Pocket, looked intentional. benches clear. Hernandez starts mouthing off. bullpens clear, with relievers scaling the outfield wall like the beaches of Normandy. Cabrera drops his glove, untucks his shirt, and yells "let's go" to someone. Julian was playing peacemaker. Cabrera gets ejected. Trembley is ticked off because the only Boston player ejected was Cash. warnings issued. craziness.

4. speaking of Trembley. the man looks like eerily like William Shatner.

SATURDAY
Hundred Million Dollar Pitcher is a Hundred Million Dollar Nightmare. walking in two runs & then giving up a grand slam. i think i'm going to just give the nod to the Orioles on this one & forget it happened. unfortunately, i seem to be forgetting a lot of Matsuzaka's starts these days. we've only won one game out of his last six starts. i think i am chalking this up to the JD Drew learning curve & pray they both make the same improvements Joshy did from his first year in Boston to his second.

SUNDAY
i have to admit, i was only half watching the Sox game, because my other eye was on the Packers game. i know that Commander Kick Ass earned win number eighteen. and that Jonathan Papelbon continues to shut 'em down -- all hail The Cheerio Mouth. but truly, the highlight of the game for me was hearing Drew introduced as Drool. completely cracked me up.

Schill and Kaz square off at Fenway tonight. i'd be worried about it but all my baseball energy right now is focused on Friday's match-up & there's no room for more worry: Matsuzaka & Pettitte. ::gulp:: what i want to know is by what heartless twist of fate the Sox play the Yankees on Sunday night -- and the Patriots are slated for primetime at the same.exact.time. how am i going to watch both?! i can't miss a Sox-Yanks game... but it's my first chance(and likely one of only a few i'll get this season) to actually see the Patriots play...

my local CBS coverage brought me the Miami-Washington game yesterday, so i didn't get to see anything Patriots other than the score scrolling by, and a few game break highlights. i am as impressed as i can be after one game. Randy Moss came out & shushed the people questioning his lack of preseason appearances. (now if he can just keep his mouth shut & act like a New England Patriot, i'll be thrilled to welcome him to the team!) Wes Welker was exactly what i thought he'd be: Brady's secret weapon. you can't cover all Tom's targets *and* put pressure on him. you're not allowed to have that many guys on the field for that! so you cover the big names, like Moss and Stallworth, leaving Welker wide open -- touchdown! and then there was Ellis Hobbs and his NFL-record-breaking 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. exciting stuff. i hope they bring the same game next week when they play the Chargers Sunday night, hosted by New England.

now if i can just figure out how to watch both games at once...

for safe keeping

last night, i was watching an episode of Men in Trees that i had recorded. the main character, Marin, is an author. after having the first chapter of the book she is currently working on published in The New Yorker, she was picked up by a publisher. circumstamces changed though & suddenly she found herself struggling to write the next chapter, so her publisher, Stuart, travelled from New York City, to see her in Elmo, Alaska, to tell her that what she had submitted was "fluff." the exchange between these characters made me think:

Stuart: What made that first chapter great was that it was messy, and... and complicated. Can I ask you something?

Marin: What made me think I was a writer in the first place?

Stuart: Why didn't you write about the messy stuff? What you were feeling?

Marin: Mostly, I was feeling lousy. It wouldn't have been a fun read.

Stuart: If I wanted fun, I would have commissioned a pop-up book.

it started me thinking about my blog. how it's changed since i started it. i used to write more from my heart, and over time, i see myself become more & more guarded. it's my reality. the way i have become more guarded in real life is accurately reflected in the way i blog. how it does little more than scratch the surface of my thoughts & feelings. like Marin, i see my writing has become "fluff." sometimes i miss the raw expression of what's inside my head...but most of the time, it just feels safer to keep it tucked out of sight.

later in that episode, Marin states: "It's not a walk in the park, putting it all out there, exposing how I feel again. It's scary."

i'm not sure why it's scary... but it is. like the character of Marin, i am messy & complicated, and more often that not, that's not a fun read. maybe one day it will be less scary... or i will start to feel less guarded enough that i'm willing to risk the vulnerability of sharing something more than just the "fluff"...

Friday Fill-in: September 7, 2007

Friday Fill-in #36

1. I admire anyone who can act with class & graciousness.

2. I crave a snack box from United, for some really strange reason -- if you've never had one, i just can't explain to you how perfect it is to have a whole little meal composed entirely of snacks, perfectly selected, and arranged in a cute little box.

3. I dislike obnoxious behavior.

4. I enjoy photos, whether i am taking them myself, sharing those taken by others or receiving them in my email or mail box from friends of their especially adorable children.

5. I wonder what new & tasty treats i might try this year at Epcot's International Food & Wine Festival when Nichole & Daniel come out in less than a month!

6. I want to try a new recipe on my menu next week, but i'm not sure which one yet.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to watching the Sox game (already did that prior to posting this actually, and they did, indeed, win), tomorrow my plans include a haircut, some errands and some laundry and Sunday, I want to watch football & Red Sox -- sports heaven!

Five on Friday: September 7, 2007

hosted by Five on Friday

Inquiring Minds

1. Which do you think reveals more about a person, the contents of their refrigerator or the contents of their purse?

i'm going to say refrigerator. you can tell if a person is organized (how neatly arranged are the items and how many have expired), prone to being clean or messy (by the number of drips), health conscious (what kinds of foods do you see inside), how much they enjoy cooking (pre-prepped meals or lots of actual ingredients), how often they eat at home (fridge stocked or bare?), how picky an eater they are (anything adventurous in there?)... lots of info!

2. When you visit someone's home, what are you most interested in looking at?
you mean other than spending time with them? i think i am drawn to the colors people choose in their homes.

3. If you could make it so that one person on earth was physically incapable of telling lies or keeping secrets, celebrities & politicians included, who would you choose?
oh boy... loaded question. way loaded. if you know me very well at all, you know exactly who i'd like to see never be able to lie or keep another secret again.

4. Have you ever spilled the beans on someone else's secret? If so, what was it?
never in a way that jeopardized the secret. i may have confided in someone else completely removed from the situation, who didn't know the people involved at all, but i've never just gone blabbing or broadcasting.

5. Have you ever kept a diary? If so, was it top secret? What did you write about?
i think i did once when i was maybe ten years old or so. i don't think it lasted for very long, and really, what did i have to really keep top secret at that age? this blog is about the closest thing i've ever had to something like a diary, at least that i've kept up with faithfully, and well... it's public on the internet so make your own conclusion. if i have something i don't want to be public knowledge, i keep it to myself.

And maybe I should do the same

1. Have you ever run away?

like from home? no. i never even threatened to. i always liked home. i have left places and avoided certain situations, but i've never run away.

2. What is the longest you've dated someone?
six years. twice. apparently after that, i expire.

3. What don't you like to think about?
people i love getting sick or hurting.

4. What was your last illness?
just a simple cold or a touch of a stomach virus. can't remember which. it's been quite a while. ::knocks on wood::

5. Do you like to get revenge?
playfully, yes. like if someone gets me to be gullible. or plays a funny joke on me. on a more serious level, i don't believe in getting revenge. i will make sure that someone who is... behaving inappropriately or inconsiderately gets their due, but only in an effort to stop them from continuing their actions. i try to adhere to this quote, as best i can though: "The only people with whom you should try to get even are those who have helped you." (John E Southard)

all aboard the Peyton Manning love train!

[insert noise like a cat throwing up a hair ball here]

(sorry Stacy. i know you guys are huge Peyton fans, but on my honor, i would have this very same rant if the QB of topic was Tom Brady. cross my heart. i hate gushing over any player when the season has barely finished drawing its first breath.)

rah rah Peyton Manning rah rah Super Bowl champions rah rah sending a message.
seriously.

this is the first. game. of. the. season.
yes, the Colts looked good last night. is there even one lone football fan out there shocked by that? i didn't think so. i know they're good. you know they're good. apparently John Madden had no freaking clue. oh. wait. that's not a surprise either.

but really.
this does not make them the team to beat.
this does not "send a message to the rest of the NFL."
this does not mean they are the Super Bowl Champions.

this is Week One.
only two teams have played. one was going to lose.
the Colts are the *defending* Champions. fresh slate. i detest when teams (yes, even my Patriots with the *three* Championships they won) are still being called the Champions when the new season starts. that's the past. when that football is kicked off for the first time that next summer fall, there is no Champion. only last year's Champion.
you would think the Colts won it all again last night or something.

we've seen one. game.
what i've learned is:
that the Colts are still good (an unfortunate fact, for me, but one which i willingly acknowledge).
that Drew Brees has some steadying to do (but i believe he'll get it done, because, after all, it's only Week One!)
that there are still fifteen other games to be played this week (not to mention the other sixteen weeks following this one).
that if Tiki Barber still wanted the spotlight focused on him, he shouldn't have retired.
that John Madden is still annoying as hell.

let the Peyton Manning fawning commence.
::rolls eyes::
an article on Pats Pulpit wisley warned last February:
Winning It All Is a Double-Edged Sword
Warning to Indianapolis Colts fans: Beware the Double-Edged Sword.
There's nothing like winning the Super Bowl, as you now know, and contrary to popular belief, it does not get old. You don't take it for granted -- you can't. If anything, every game, regular season or playoffs, takes on that much more significance, makes your heart pound that much harder and faster, makes you fans all the more rabid.
But, beware. Getting back to the Big Game gets harder, and there are myriad reasons....
Despite all the pratfalls and pitfalls, it's unlikely the Colts will collapse the way Pittsburgh did. I expect Indy to compete for a top seed again in 2007. But the road gets a lot steeper, a lot bumpier, a lot more perilous.
A wise man congratulated his players who won a Super Bowl. "No one can ever take that away from you."
Enjoy this feeling. Then watch your back. All glory is fleeting.

oh and do you think Al Michaels could have found a way to work in the word 'phenomenal' just one more time? =P

some wins don't feel like victories

last night's game, even though we ended up winning, felt like a loss. it was stressful and difficult to watch and a struggle from start to finish. i almost couldn't feel the joy of reclaiming half a game against the Yankees. i suppose i should take comfort in the Sox battling to stay in it and coming back with a late game win but...

mostly, i just want to forget that game happened.

two quick comments first, before i block it all from memory:

1. Dougie came up lame again in his first game back catching Wake. hamstring this time. i, personally, am eternally grateful for Kevin Cash being able to catch the knuckler. i wonder if now Wake will reconsider his announcement that he's done when Dougie's done. i know Dougie is his pal, the other half of The Wakabelli Show, but i feel like that statement was made in light of The Bard Experiment. and Cash is no Bard.
on the subject of Cash & Mirabelli, though, the Orioles announcers said something during the game last night that made me laugh in a bewildered but amused sort of way: "They have Kevin Cash, but he doesn't have the bat Doug Mirabelli has." uhhhh... huh? i wish i could have asked them what they meant by *that*. i realize Cash is hitting .109 to Dougie's .219 but it isn't like we're seeing Stud Who Hits Bombs this year or something out of our lovable back up catcher. i am willing to wager that if Cash saw as many plate appearances as Dougie has, they'd probably be pretty close. but to hear them talk about it, you'd think Dougie had Lowell's numbers!

2. and also? when the Sox are tied at 6 in the eighth inning, with bases loaded and one out, i never want to see JD Drew come up to bat again. >=[

and with that we forget about the agony last night's game provided. oh man... i hope Lestah brings his control tonight...

you really have to work with me here, people.

i was taught at a very young age that it's impolite to stare. but seriously. people make it so difficult to be proper.

on my way home today, i saw a man. his head was completely bald. except for two huge fluffy white sideburns. like someone had come along and slapped the fuzzy part of velcro on him as an afterthought.

thank God for wearing sunglasses. and traffic lights that turn green.

there are games that just frustrate me endlessly.

last night's game was one of those games.

1. i'd be lying if i said it didn't unnerve me just a little to see Matt Clement in the dugout last night. i was trying to calm myself with repeated reminders that his contract is done after this season, but Daniel mentioned that his being there was a sign of bad luck. i initially shook it off, but it would turn out later that maybe Daniel was, in fact, on to something.

2. Ellsbury's double in the first "completed" yesterday's missing piece of the cycle. and the bonus of Ellsbury hitting ahead of Papi is that it often eliminates the possibility of a double play!

3. last night's game was a tale of squandering opportunities. *sheesh* but i find nothing more maddening that wasted base runners. bases loaded, first inning, one out. only one run managed to score. lather-rinse-repeat in the fifth. and when they loaded 'em up for a *third* time in the seventh, not a single, solitary runner crossed home plate. count them. *three* chances to come up with some big runs. nine men on base. only two lousy runs scored?? ARG. i feel like this is the freaking theme song for this season. doesn't matter how many men you get on base if you can't bring any of them in!

4. Schill's two out melt-downs scare me a little.

5. i think Remy should be required to let us in on the joke when he's laughing so hard he can't finish a promo.

6. ok seriously. does Youk have some invisible target on him that only opposing pitchers can see or something? last night the pitch that clipped him actually skinned his elbow & made him bleed.

7. i felt a tremor of residual 2006 bullpen fear when Bryan Corey entered the game in the seventh. he did all right, considering. better than MDC, that's for sure. >=[

8. i have no problem admitting that the Sox turned a double play in the top of the seventh that i think was a gift. the first out was good but i think the runner beat the throw to 1B for the second out. no one complained -- and neither am i. but i still think we got a gift. turns out it didn't matter since we blew the game anyway.

Evil Empire, six games back & off this evening. Wakey stepping up to attempt keeping up with Joshy, going for win number seventeen tonight.

Sox on MLBtv for me, NFL opening night on tv (muted til the Sox are done playing).

GO SOX!
(and go Saints! boo Peyton Manning.)

we call it The Jacoby Ellsbury Show

a leadoff single. a two-run homer. a triple (where he was left stranded). a stolen base. zooming all over the outfield. have to say, i'm liking Jacoby Ellsbury more and more by the minute.

i'm pretty pleased with our rookies. our future is looking promising in Boston.

i forgot how to kill time now that my workload has decreased by fifty percent =P

borrowed this from Krystyn, to whom i cannot link, because her blog is private. =)

Three things in my fridge that define life right now:
1. water - always water. it's good for you!
2. cranberry juice - always cranberry juice. straight. unsweetened. pure. no exceptions.
3. yogurt - it was on sale & i had a coupon so i stocked up since the expiration dates cooperated with me not being home for a week. and that about sums up what's in my fridge right now, other than various condiments. no perishables to spoil while i was away and i haven't been grocery shopping yet since returning.

Three recent acquisitions:
1. a new bottle of SPF 60 Sun Effects for going on vacation to a place where they get confused by wet stuff falling from the sky. ;-)
2. a cute new bag for my carry-on, and to tote things back & forth to work. it has adorable little palm trees embroidered on it. =)
3. lots of new photos from vacation.

Three classics I reach for every day:
1. glasses
2. cell phone
3. computer

My kids right now, in three words or less:
don't exist (yet?)

My sweetie right now, in three words or less:
in my dreams

What's on my to-do list:
do laundry from vacation.
grocery shop.
stop at the bank.
organize my recipe collection - current system no longer functional.
work on a project (as soon as the necessary supplies arrive).

What I do often that relates to the season right now:
stay inside where it's cool. =P

What I'm listening to right now:
someone grinding something out in the shop.
the gurgling of the fish tank.
typing.

What I'm worried about right now:
worried? not really worried at the moment...

Which news stories I'm following right now:
the only "news" i make a point to follow on my own is sports related. i get my "real news" updates from Daniel & Michelle. i can't take the depressing nature of the news, so i allow them to keep me informed. that and the repetitive nature of news broadcasts drives me up a wall. case in point: FOX News showed two stories in succession on Wednesday afternoon, to the point that it was making Daniel & i laugh - the Senator Larry Craig story, and the continued rehashing of Princess Diana.

What I'm reading right now:
nothing at this very moment. i finished "The Two Towers" while i was on vacation, and haven't started "Return of the King" yet.

What I'm looking forward to right now:
hopefully scoring some tickets to see the Sox play in Tampa one last time this season toward the end of the month. and getting to hang out with Nichole & Daniel at WDW in less than a month.

One small thing that's making me happy right now:
it's almost lunchtime and i am hungry.

and this one i'm *almost* sorry that i missed

if i hadn't been having such a great time at Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure, i would be severely disappointed that i missed yesterday's game. while the game was being played, we were lucky that one person in our party had the ability to get game updates on her phone. we were thrilled to find out that we won won. and won big. 10-0. it wasn't til we got back home that Daniel discivered our rookie pitcher threw a no-hitter. in his second MLB apearance. =O

how's *that* for something to live up to today, Lestah??

Snapshot From Along the Broken Road: August 2007

need to insert a photo of me from this past month here. but i'm not at home so i'll have to do this in a few days.

1) a gift i gave: i'm not sure i gave a gift in August... hmmmm... bad Dawn =(

2) something i apologized for: venting to someone over & over about something that is not their fault & has nothing at all even to do with them

3) the last person i thanked: Nichole & Daniel for hosting my vacation

4)the last movie i watched: we watched most of "Clerks" on Thursday night

5) the best meal i cooked this month: i think it might have been the Angel Hair Fresco i made the other night. was exactly what i was craving.

6) the last place i ate out: hmmmm... Angel Stadium, but really more like the Fox Sports Bar, i think.

7) something that made me cry: pure frustration.

8) something that made me laugh: some of the scenes from "50 First Dates."

9) the last person i talked to on the phone: the girl from my dermatologist's office who caled to tell me my biopsy was clean! =)

10) someone i'm thinking about today: Alison. wondering how she's doing as she counts down the home stretch to Baby Gracie's arrival.

11) something i want to remember about this month: more new memories made with two of my favorite people.

12) a photo i took this month: another one that will have to wait til i get home again...

maybe it's better that i didn't watch

i only saw the first couple of innings of yesterday's game before we left to see the Angels play ythe Rangers. when i powered down the tv, the Sox were up 2-0. we hadn't even reached Angel Stadium yet when Nichole texted me that the Orioles were up 3-2. by the time the scoreboard started showing scores in the other games, it was 9-4 in the seventh inning.

i'm not going to lie. my stomach sunk. Wakey had been scratched with, what else? a sore back. what the hell...? is this contagious?! first Manny. then Kielty. now Wake? and then JD Drew fouls a ball off his foot & he's out of the game so Kielty goes out tentatively, to see if he can handle playing. my worst fear was that JFL was going to end up playing outfield for us because we were out of players. and it didn't matter where they put him -- tricky right field or left field with the Monster spitting the balls hit off it with all the predictability of a knuckleball -- it couldn't possibly have turned into anything short of a disaster.

but it appears they muddled through. and with one eye on the game in front of me, and the other on the Boston score, i saw my boys slowly climb out of the hole they had dig. four became six. and then seven. and even though the Sox just dropped their fourth (??) consecutive game, they managed to do it 9-8. so what this tells me is that finally we're scoring runs we had bats. we brought them late. we tried to mount a comeback.

oh yeah. this sense of calm? that's all because the Yankees lost to Tampa in the Bronx. 9-1. we still have our five game lead. but for crying out loud. we need a win before things get ugly. ok, uglier. (more ugly? hmmm... no spellcheck available because i'm on a Mac and Blogger doesn't like Mac...)

anyway. Spetember 1 brings expanded roster. reinforcments. help. whew. sort of. i hope Clay Buchholz is ready for this because surprise! you're starting today kid.

please make sure your seatbelts are fastened, and keep all arms, hands, feet, and legs inside the vehicle at all times. this looks to be a bumpy ride ahead, folks.

Friday Fill-in: August 31, 2007

Friday Fill-in #35

1. The last time someone flirted with me i would be willing to bet i was so clueless, i didn't even know it.
2. I am SO glad that Nichole's schedule allowed her to be off this weekend so i could spend some quality time with her!
3. Where in the world is the Red Sox offense?!
4. Long weekends are perfect for extending one's vacation by an extra day.
5. Coming up next: NFL in less than a week!
6. I adore the weather in Southern California.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to my first visit to Angel Stadium, tomorrow my plans include DISNEYLAND! (so i've been told anyway) and Sunday, I want to do whatever it is Nichole has on my itinerary for us to do, but i've got no idea what that would be -- LOL!

all my hope is being placed on Wakey. right now that feels like the safest place to be. i need something feel-good. Wake sitting atop the stats with the first seventeenth win of the season in all of MLB would soothe the last three days.

Feast One Hundred & Fifty Eight

Appetizer
Who is the easiest person for you to talk to?

there are a few people i can talk to easily. those very special people who are part of the "circle of trust." they know who they are. =) they each bring something unique by having theor own perspectives & thoughts that i respect a great deal. they each "handle" me differently, because they *are* different from one another. i couldn't possibly value one over another. i need them all for exactly who they are.

Soup
If you could live in any ancient city during the height of the quality of its society and culture, which one would you choose?

i'm not sure how well I would do with "ancient." part of me is tempted to say Venice, because it seems romantic. but i think i would be moe curious about a city in Germany or maybe Russia...

Salad
What is the most exciting event you’ve ever witnessed?

it's completely trivial, but the only thing popping to mind right now: the Red Sox winning the 2004 World Series, and seeing it unfold was pretty intense and exciting. i don't know if it's the *most* exciting thing but its the one that sticks most recently in my mind.

Main Course
If you were a celebrity, what would you do for a publicity stunt?

i wouldn't. because i wouldn't be a celebrity. i am private & quiet, and i only reveal what i want to. i hate being a spectacle. i hate the spotlight, being the center of attention. i couldn't deal with the fishbowl existence of being a celebrity.

Dessert
What do you consider the ideal age to have a first child?

for me? 28-32. closing in on the end of that in the next year or so though, so i guess i will have to take what i can get, if & when it arrives huh? ;-)

they're killing my soul

not good. not good at all. Captain Kick Ass did not lead us to a rousing victory.

we lost the one game i thought we would win in this series.

and they killed me slowly, inning by painful inning.

this afternoon, we put all our trust in Schill. our stopper, once upon a time. our go-to man, when all else failed. i hope he can reach back through the sands of time and channel 2004 Schill or we're going to suffer being swept... and the media howling that will follow.

and then there's Manny with a strained oblique... going into September... and no, i do not think he's faking it. not now. not when we're winning. not when he's just started performing. ::gulp::

the lucky Trot Nixon jersey will be worn today. please let us be holding our lead at six games when it's all over...

Canned Meat

1. Do you check your email once a day or more? Explain:
i check it countless times per day. when i am at work, i am always near my computer. at home, i just always have my email open, and my apartment is small enough that i can either hear or see it when new mail arrives. so, basically, unless i'm out, i check it anytime new mail is delivered.
2. When you receive SPAM emails, do you just delete them or take the time to mark it as SPAM? Explain:
95% of my SPAM lands in my junk folder anyway. the few that slip through are always marked as SPAM. i hate SPAM, the email kind and the "meat."
3. When a friend/acquaintance emails you a “forward” email like a joke or chain letter, do you forward it to your friends or just delete it? Explain:
it has to be *really* good for me to forward it.
4. Who are two people whose emails you look forward to receiving? Explain:
i can't pick just two. i look forward to almost all the email that i receive!
5. Do you believe that email has completely replaced other forms of communication?
no, not completely. it's quick, easy & convenient, but there is still a purpose for phone calls and snail mail.

authorblog asks: August 27, 2007

this week David asks:
Do you believe in ghosts?

tough to say. i have no personal experience with such things -- and i can't say i am upset about that. my cousins, who i am relatively certain aren't of questionable sanity, swear they lived with one. they say his name was Eddy. he wore a red & black plaid shirt, and suspenders held up his pants. he would hang out mostly in the front room of the house, looking out the window, as if waiting for or watching for someone. they didn't say he ever moved things, but that sometimes the lights would flicker when he was in the room. he seemed not to pay much attention to my older cousin, just sort of accepted her being around, but he didn't seem fond of her younger sister. once he frowned at her & bared his teeth! oh, and lest you think they were children with vivid imaginations, they were both well into their twenties when this occurred!

so... do i believe in ghosts? i've never seen one. but that doesn't mean they don't exist. i believe in many things i cannot see. i believe that many things are possible. and i believe that there are many mysteries in this world that we cannot explain. it's easy to discount that which we do not understand, but inability to comprehend does not boil down to impossibility.

bottom line: i think i believe in their possibility more than in their specific existence... and i am also quite all right with not knowing for sure.

the best Sox off-day ever.

SATURDAY'S GAME
1. i didn't realize the Red Sox had improved to second best fielding percentage in the American League!

2. i just love saying this: Mike Lowell has the best fielding percentage for a third baseman -- of all time!

3. ok, one more stat & then i'll stop: Pedroia Pocket is the second toughest guy to strike out in the American League! how's that for something i never saw coming, right up there with his third best team batting average.

4. Tim McCarver finally said something worth hearing (hey, it was bound to happen sometime, with the odds of probability & all) about pitching the knuckleball: "you need the fingers of a safe cracker and the zen of a Buddhist to throw it."

5. not only does he just seem able to pitch into infinity, but ageless Wakey sprinted to catch a foul pop for an out in the fifth inning.

6. observation: Bobby Kielty is the anti-WMP.

7. still loving Cash catching Wake.

8. Uribe (for the Other Sox) has a really uncomfortable looking batting stance.

9. it feels like Christmas that the Red Sox actually managed to bring bats three games in a row.

10. Yankees win. steady at six-and-a-half games in the AL East.

SUNDAY'S GAME
1. this was the first game of the series i was forced to watch WGN. MLBtv showed NESN for both Friday games. Saturday was on FOX. someone needs to get these announcers a pronunciation cheat sheet. Julian opts to use the J in his name, so it's said the way it looks, not HOO-lian. and it's pronounced "Kelty" (the way he said it when he read the line up on Saturday & introduced himself), not "Key-elty."

2. one more thing: i feel the need to point out that in an all Sox series, you can't really say "the Sox" & expect it to be definitive. for instance "leading off in the Sox half of the inning..." yeah ummm... one would imagine. =P

3. about time JD Drew hit a home run & earned a little bit of that disgustingly large contract...

4. ...ya know, something like Kielty, who has been a big-league Red Sock for all of a week and already hit a home run. maybe *he* would like to play right field for us...?

5. four appearances now without a run given up! go Gagne! =)

6. (not rubbing it in Dan, i promise...) i am stunned the Red Sox scored double digits in four consecutive games. i didn't think our offense had it in them this season, never mind the ability to score late in games. offense finally coming together? please?

7. Yankees lose. seven-and-a-half. Sox off Monday, but the Yankees give it one more go-round in Detroit. worst case scenario, we meet in the Bronx with seven games between us.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

so. tomorrow i get on a plane & head West for my vacation. i will miss game one of the Sox-Yankees series. i *never* miss a Sox-Yankees game. no doubt, when i land, the first text Nichole & Daniel will get will inform them that i have landed safely, and the next will ask what happened in the game. (and the best part is, they totally get why this is *that* important!) the people sitting around me will hate me before we even finish our taxi down the runway for take off. the first pitch of the game is scheduled to happen just about the time we begin to board. i'm going to be fidgeting, wondering & agonizing over what's happening in the game, for a five-plus hour flight. the pitching match ups are intense: Matsuzaka/Pettite. Joshy/Rog-ah. Schill/Wang. *anything* can happen.

please let our pitching stay hot. please let the bats have been packed when we left Chicago. please let the momentum from the weekend carry over. and please let the day off not have done more harm than good.

it helps that the EE just suffered the worst road shut out in their history, 16-0, on get-away night in Detroit. eight games up. eight is a nice number.

now this is what i call Sox Appeal

second day-night double header in a week. here we go...

Game 1
1. i thought i was losing my mind. (short trip, trust me.) but seriously. i was watching on MLBtv and the away half of the first inning: NESN. the home half: Chicago's station. top of the second: NESN. it finally stayed NESN. hooray!

2. we saw the Ghost of 2006 Joshy >=[ not so much with the Commander Kick Ass performance today -- first run he gave up, he *walked* in, for crying out loud, and then the two-run bomb -- but win number sixteen just the same.

2a. hey Wakey, darling? consider that your silent challenge to keep neck-and-neck with Joshy on your next start, ok? i love that you're right up there on the top of the world.

3. thought i was thankful for Lugo scoring the tying run. turns out he botched a base steal that i didn't see because i was working. so he negated my thanks before he even earned it. JFL, setting new standards every day.

4. i missed a lot of the game because i had to work. and then i had to boat drive home.

5. logged back in just in time to see Tek hit a two-run homer in the ninth to make it 11-3. off Mike Myers. i wonder if it's safe to laugh at a *former* Yankee...?

6. five and a half game AL East lead.

7. jeez... this game took something like three hours and 55 minutes to play??

8. eleven runs on fifteen hits. i hope they saved something for the second game of the doubleheader. if there actually *is* a second game... rain, rain, stay away...

Game 2
1. Pedroia! =) wee second baseman was back! soon soon! and with a vengeance.

2. first hit as a Red Sock for Cash!! and then a double!! 2-for-3, plus a walk, with a run batted in. have i mentioned i love Kevin Cash? don't misunderstand. there's no replacing Dougie in my heart, but at least there's someone like Cash in the wings. (no offense to The Josh Bard Project.)

3. Papi Power! i've missed his multi homer games.

4. in addition to Papi, the Sox brought bats to *both* games! ('scuse me while i scoop my jaw up off the floor.) Manny is producing. Youk looks like he's coming out of his slump. Lowell is staying hot (and *not* going into the second half slump that has plagued him in past seasons). so so SO happy to see our offense starting to do what we've believed it was capable of.
pleasepleaseplease let this be the start of something consistent.

5. Don Orsillo: the Red Sox bullpen has not given up a run today. - i really felt in my gut this would be Gagne's first Sox 1-2-3... and then Don opened his mouth. at least it wasn't a run scored. just a walk that amounted to nothing.

6. sorry Dan.

and there you have it: a day-night sweep. not easy to pull off. i am by no means gloating. i am thankful. and thanks to the Tigers -- so many thanks! -- we are back to being six-and-a-half games up with the EE loss.

Wakey goes for sweet sixteen this afternoon. GO SOX!

Noah? hey Noah! i want you to build an ark!

my normal 25 minute commute home took nearly an hour today. it was raining so hard, streets were flooding; traffic lights were out; and even with my windshield wipers set to "so-fast-it-looks-like-they-might-just-fly-off" (and let's face it, when you need to use a setting that high, it's really just a futile effort at that pont) i still could only see watery distortions of the vehicles in front of me. half of which did not bother to turn on their headlights. am i the only one who follows the "if your wipers are on, your lights should be too" rule?

and then came the mad dash from car to front door. i don't know why i bothered running. when it's raining this hard, it doesn't matter if you're in it for three seconds or three minutes. you still look like a drowned rat.

now if you'll excuse me, i'm dripping all over my keyboard. i think i need a towel.

365 days

...has it been a whole year...?

'Cause when push comes to shove
You see what you're made of
You might bend til you break
'Cause it's all you can take
On your knees
You look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad
You get strong
Wipe your hands
Shake it off
Then you stand.

see what happens when i have nothing better to do?

so i've been sitting around, waiting for the Sox to play the Sox, or for someone to just put us out of our misery & call the game already. two hours after the scheduled start, still waiting. so i've been wandering around aimlessly online. found these -- though i have *no* idea how i ended up here. i think they are so cool. i wonder if they really work?

David Ortiz is ready.

(setting the scene: after Tuesday's 8-6 win over the Rays)
Ortiz was still light on his feet after the game, dancing in the buff back and forth in the shower room while singing over and over at the top of his lungs the theme from "Monday Night Football." "Dah-dah-dah-DAH, dah-dah-dah-DAH," sang Ortiz, apparently jacked up that the team's fantasy football draft was about to commence as soon as he could find a towel.

(and in a Wednesday interview on EEI, Francona, talking about the Sox Fantasy Football Draft)
"I had to get up in the middle of the draft and apologize for being so good."

LOL!

now i ask the following:
1. how can you not love the Red Sox clubhouse?
2. how does this not make you want to play Fantasy Football?
3. where did we find these guys??

pain

this game was so much more painful than just the obvious loss to the D-Rays.

1. for all the anticipatory grinning & hungry lip-smacking we do, worthy of sitting down to a glorious Thanksgiving feast, when we pitch Wakefield against the Rays, at this point they must look forward to seeing Matsuzaka take the mound two days later. between our offense giving him the cold shoulder they used to reserve for Wakey, and the fact that he feels the need to give up two-run homers when he only has a 1-0 lead does not improve the situation. bottom line is that our Hundred Million Dollar Pitcher can't get a win against the worst freaking team in baseball.

2. wee Pedroia took a pitch right off the elbow. the sound it made when it hit him made the one off Lowell seem like he was hit with a rolled pair of socks. Pedroia tried to tough it out, but just the way he was acting at first base, i could see something wasn't right. sure enough, after he scored the Sox lone run on a Mike Lowell sac fly, we didn't see him again. Alex Cora took his spot in the field. x-rays were negative. they say it's just a bruised elbow. but the other side of the coin is that they have no timetable for his return. if you had told me i would say this at the beginning of the season, i would have questioned your sanity: i am confident in Alex Cora to play well at 2B, but i am afraid for our offensive line up without Pedroia's bat.

3. as if one man down wasn't enough, the Rays catcher tried to pick off Hinske & pegged him with the ball. he ended up taking a seat & Kielty took over left field. i'm ok with that, but we cannot afford for this to start happening just as things start heating up. ::huddles in corner, alone, rocking & muttering incoherently::

4. ha! Tek also believes that Coco does better when his hair in cornrowed! the painful part: last night, it wasn't braided.

5. Tito was asked about Youk's nickname, Greek God of Walks. his reply: "I've seen Kevin in the shower. He's not the Greek god of anything." ummm... Tito? ouch. that was just mean.

6. adding insult quite literally to injury, the stupid Yankees just had to win. i liked the number six better than the number five. but i like five better than four.

7. at least our loss wasn't as painful as the one the Orioles were handed: 30-3 to the Rangers. i thought i saw the score wrong. and to make matters worse for Baltimore, it was the first game of a double header. they couldn't even slink back to the hotel bar to forget that game once it was over. they had to come back out for even more abuse.

8. one thing that could have been painful & wasn't: Eric Gagne pitched the eighth. he didn't give up a run. he didn't give up a hit. only a lone walk.

off to Chicago for four games against the Mega Sox. as Surviving Grady once proclaimed: "In Beckett we trust, all others pay cash." dear God, please don't let the Other Sox choose now to start playing better ball...
