Dawn's Thursday Thirteen, edition 8: we have success! too bad it it didn't happen on the ball field last night =P

ok that's *it*. i have been trying for days to create this post but it requires photos & every time i try to upload, Blogger gets all cranky on me. i have had *enough*. some of this stuff is getting so old, it's going to have a "hey, you remember that time when..." quality to it!

so. anyway. TTTHHHBBBPPPFFFTTT!!! to the Blogger issues. let's get this show on the road. and as my Thursday Thirteen to boot, since conveniently, i have 13 points to make.

Thirteen Things That About the Red Sox That Blogger Refused to Let Me Say in a More Timely Fashion

1) going way back to the All Star Game (see what i mean?!) & the Manny "controversy" about how dare he be injured & not play, thus putting his team's interests & his own health first...i think that Tim McCarver is a gigantic ass for alluding to this being an imaginary injury by stating "the worst thing about his knee injury was 'remembering which leg to limp with'." and all this nonsense about Manny being the only one that didn't show up to play. tell me...did anyone see Pedro Martinez there after he was scratched? lay off of Manny. he's being a whole lot less Manny this year. he's trying to actually run the bases. he's making an effort in the field. he's not been whining at all.

2) i miss the Wakabelli Show.

i miss my favorite pitcher on the mound, quietly getting the job done. i want him back quickly...but not as the expense of his health. a stress fracture in his ribs...and they are getting the impression he pitched through that kind of discomfort for a MONTH. iron man. sacrifice self for team, knowing that pitching is an area of struggle this season. have i mentioned i miss him?

3) the Mike Lowell rumor freaked me out. i am glad they put it to rest, both for him & for RSN. he is a freak of nature at third base. the man plays injured with hardly a grimace. the man shows up to the field with a stomach bug on game day & has to be sent home. the man is The King of Doubles. leave him be.

4) on the topic of trade rumors. i am heartsick at the thought of Trot Nixon being put up on the trading block. player after professional player has been criticized for having no team loyalty...merely following the paychecks to the highest bidder. how many current players can you name that have played for the same team their entire career? and here is one--and not a non-contributing player at that!--who explicitly makes it known that he wants to finish his career in Boston...and they have not even sat down to talk with him. that discourages & disgusts me that they will not even allow him that respect for what he has done in a Red Sox uniform.

5) one last trade deadline related thought regarding one of two players i would be THRILLED to see go: "A Julian Tavarez-for-Ray King deal with Colorado is likely dead because the Rockies don't want to pay Tavarez's $3.1 million salary for 2007. Imagine that." cracked. me. up.

6) this little bit on A-Rod made me chuckle as only a Red Sox fan can:
• Feeling bad for A-Rod yet?
Considering ol' blue lips made more $$$$$$ in the time it took me to write that sentence than I'll make in the next 10 years, uh, no, I'm not feeling bad for Slappy McWhippingboy. The story is relentlessly fascinating, though. First, it's almost as if the soulless New York tabloid media (and to an extent, the Yankees' counterproductive fans) are on his case in part just to see how far they can push him. It's almost like they want to break him, want him to turn into another Knoblauch before their eyes, want him to feel unworthy, want to run perhaps the most talented player in baseball out of town for no other reason than because he is not Derek Jeter-McCarver, Captain of All Things Intangible. There's something voyeuristic and intensely cruel about what's happening here. I've always thought it was a matter of time before A-Rod seized the moment and carried the Yankees to a playoff series victory or two - and then I realized he'd already done it, against the Twins in '04, and everyone was too busy getting gauzy camera angles of Jeter's reactions to notice. Because of the burden of expectations, his monster contract and his calculated, insincere persona, A-Rod gets no leeway or credit for anything he has accomplished - it's what's expected of him, after all. So here is now, strangling the bat, grinding the damn thing into sawdust in his hands, trying to hit a five-run homer and wondering what the hell he's supposed to do. Here he is now, slinging air-mailed throws into the first base boxes, consulting one more quack psychologist, and spending sleepless nights asking why he ever agreed to change positions for that smirking jerk to the left, the alleged captain who defended Giambi but so tellingly refused to defend him. It's a colossal mess, and while as a Red Sox fan I hope he continues to submarine the Yankees, as a baseball fan I hope he gets his ---- straight, because it would be a shame for his talent to be devoured by the jackals. Let's just hope by the time he gets it together - if he gets it together - he's playing for the Phillies, or somewhere else far from this rivalry. (Touching All the Bases)
i have to say...i feel for him a little bit. i mean he can't do *anything* right, even when he is producing. he may be an arrogant, greedy prima donna but there is no arguing that he has talent. he's human. he's going to slump & have bad games & struggle from time to time. i guess everyone just pales in the shadow of Jeter. and speaking of shortstops that get lost in the shuffle, how about our little Alex: "Light-hitting" Alex Gonzalez has two more home runs than Jeter (or, if you prefer, Trot Nixon. What was it that Trot was doing differently back when he had power, anyway?) And by the way, Sutcliffe blathered again last night that Jeter is the best defensive shortstop in the AL. Yup, I'm pretty sure he was drinking on their air again. You, me and A-Rod know that Gonzo is so much better than Jeter it's not even worth debating. (Touching All the Bases)

7) love this quote about the Cap'n: "Everyone appreciates Varitek, from the pitchers who rank ahead of his own offense at the top of his priorities list, to the manager who can't help but speak of his own player in reverent tones, to the fans who see in him play the game with the dedication and passion not of a multimillionaire star, but of a working-class grunt desperate to hang on to his dream job. He might be the most universally respected Sox player of my lifetime..."

and another...just 'cause.

8) "Ten Things About Last Night" from Surviving Grady was worth a chuckle...and i whole-heartedly agree. i nodded along & everything. except for one thing. #5. i still think the Rays (and any other team donning those vest-style tops) have much uglier uniforms than the A's. =P

9) hey...do you remember that time Big Papi stole second base?..."and Manny and Youk looked like they were going to have a seizure in the dugout they were laughing so hard" while doing the two-man wave?...and Mark Loretta pulling up the base & handing it over to Papi at the end of the game? good times. =)

10) or how about that time when Dougie "How-YOU-Doin'?" Mirabelli, batting all of 190-something, hit that 3-run homer to tie up a game? i love to see him shine. he gets so excited. and i am tired of hearing about Bard who is hitting so impressively back in San Diego. *of course* he is. he's not stressing every 5th game about catching one of the most difficult pitches in baseball & letting balls get away from him, so he can focus on other aspects of the game. ::rolling my eyes:: NO ONE catches Wakefield with as much ease and JOY as Dougie, maytheyneverbeseparatedagain.

11) The Kid has earned my respect. by that, i mean i do not pace when i know he's coming up next in the rotation. he's got some stuff, that one. a little more experience...a little more maturity...and he is going to be part of the future of this ball club. if they are smart enough to hang onto him that is.

12) i am ready for Wells to come back. he's a far sight better than anyone else who has pitched fifth in the rotation. if he can just stay healthy till Wakefield is healed, then i can live with Snyder at the back of the rotation.

13) as much as i love the second half of "set-'em-up and close-'em-down"...i have to say, something about watching Timlin pitch fascinates me. i don't even know why. but i find it impossible not to like him.

meme-ology

shamelessly borrowed from Divine Reality

GRUB-OLOGY

What is your favorite fast food restaurant?
Wendy's

What is your favorite sit down restaurant?
Venezia in Boston

On average, what size tip do you leave at a restaurant?
well it really depends upon the service. 20% as a rule, but if you leave something to be desired as a server, i will drop it to 15%. i have tipped higher in cases of exceptional service...gone below 15% if the service has been pretty poor...and once or twice, i have not tipped at all for some truly horrible service--if you could call it service at all.

What food could you eat every day for two weeks and not get sick of?
pasta, as long as i could change what i added to it

Name three foods you detest above all others.
bananas. oatmeal. mushrooms.

What is your favorite dish to order in a Chinese restaurant?
i prefer the buffets so i can pick & choose what looks good.

What are your pizza toppings of choice?
cheese, fresh tomato & basil

What do you like to put on your toast?
a little bit of butter (i hate soggy toast) & some grape jelly

What is your favorite type of gum?
Extra. spearmint flavor.

Number of contacts in your cell phone?
ummmm...a dozen maybe? i only use it for emergencies anyway.

Number of contacts in your email address book?
exactly 100!

What is your wallpaper on your computer?

What is your screensaver on your computer?
a slide show i created of favorite photos of my god daughter, my other friends' babies, my friends & photos i have taken

Are there naked pictures saved on your computer?
i really wish i could devise a clever, cryptic answer to make everyone wonder but...i can't so, no. just no. how boring. or if there are, i do not know about them!

How many land line phones do you have in your house?
2

How many televisions are in your house?
3

What kitchen appliance do you use the least?
the blender

What is the format of the radio station you listen to the most?
i am a notorious radio surfer. i surf all 12 pre-programmed stations which range from country to rock, decide on a song, leave it on that station until a song comes on that i don't like (or a commercial. or too much dj.) and then the process begins again.

How many sex toys do you own that require batteries?
none. and none that don't require batteries either.

BI-OLOGY

What do you consider to be your best physical attribute?
hmmmmm...i do like my eyes but i also like that my body is very evenly proportioned

Are you right handed or left handed?
right handed

Do you like your smile?
i like my smile when i smile for real. i hate the fake one when people force me into a posed photo.

Have you ever had anything removed from your body?
nope

Would you like to?
would i like to what?? i'd like to do a lot of things. do you mean "would i like to have something removed from my body"?? not particularly unless it jeopardized my health.

Do you prefer to read when you go to the bathroom?
i can think of more comfortable places to read.

Which of your five senses do you think is keenest?

What is the heaviest item you lift regularly?
my dog

MISC-OLOGY

If it were possible, would you want to know the day you were going to die?
no. there are just some things i would rather not know.

If you could change your first name, what would you change it to?
i am rather attached to this one after almost 30 years. i'd have a difficult time remembering to answer to something new.

How do you express your artistic side?
with my camera. with my blog design. by scrapping (if i ever unpack all my crap!)

What color do you think you look best in?
deep red. various browns. white. black. orange.

How long do you think you could last in a medium security prison?
i wouldn't. i would fall apart completely. heard too many prison stories from Ken.

Have you ever swallowed a non-food item by mistake?
not that i know of...but they claim you swallow a bunch of spiders in your sleep every year. ::shudder:: i assure you, if that is true, it is certainly not something i would do on purpose!

If we weren’t bound by society’s conventions, do you have a relative you would make a pass at?
eeewww!!! NO.

How often do you go to church?
not as often as i should...but i do make a point to go when i feel i need to. i haven't found a church that feels like home since i moved here and that has a lot to do with why i do not go as often as i should.

Have you ever saved someone’s life?
not that i am aware of

Has someone ever saved yours?
i haven't really been in a situation where that has been necessary in a literal sense. but figuratively speaking? absolutely.

DARE-OLOGY

For this last section, if you would do it for less or more money, indicate how much. Oooh, goody, I love dares!

Would you walk naked for a half mile down a public street for $100,000?
not a chance. not for *any* amount of money.

Would you kiss a member of the same sex for $100?
like on the cheek? sure.

Would you have sex with a member of the same sex for $10,000?
i would not have sex with anyone for money. and girls do not interest me.

Would you allow one of your little fingers to be cut off for $200,000?
HELL no. i can't even get a papercut without whining.

Would you never blog again for $50,000?
i *really* enjoy blogging. i think i would need at least $100,000 to consider that.

Would you pose naked in a magazine for $250,000?
nope. i am very private.

Would you drink an entire bottle of hot sauce for $1000?
no way. that much hot sauce would make me throw up. and you could not pay me enough money to throw up.

Would you, without fear of punishment, take a human life for $1,000,000?
why am i suddenly thinking of this quote?? "Husbands die every day, Dolores. Why... one is probably dying right now while you're sitting here weeping. They die... and leave their wives their money. I should know, shouldn't I? Sometimes they're driving home from their mistress' aparment and their brakes suddenly fail."

Would you shave your head and get your entire body waxed for $5,000?
ya know what? unless you've ever heard someone get a Brazilian wax, you might consider it. i, on the other hand, do not enjoy pain. i *misght* shave my head for $5000 but keep that wax away from me.

Would you give up watching television for a year for $25,000?
yes, i could do that...but can i still have internet???

...that Curt Schilling bleeds RED:

"Even if I didn't retire after next year I just can't imagine jumping to the other side of this rivalry. Financially this game has taken care of me, so the next contract would be the same as this one in that we'd end up where we wanted to live and in a scenario we were familiar with. When all is said and done if I didn't retire after next year I couldn't imagine playing anywhere but Boston anyway to finish my career." -- 7.21.06, Curt Schilling

he who laughs...

one of the comments on the neighbor's car entry from Sunday mentioned karma. turns out...the last laugh was on me. while i stood in my window, laughing at the fact that the little red sports car was quickly becoming a kiddie pool...KA-BOOM!

and Mother Nature said: "you shall have no cable access. no tv, no internet AND no phone for you." and it was so.

and so it came to pass that i would suffer in boredom for 16.5 hours before it would be restored to me.

i'd say that'll teach me but...probably not. =P

adding to the list of pet peeves

there actually *is* something more annoying than telemarketing calls. answering the phone to hear a recorded message informing you that "all agents are currently taking other calls...please hold the line for the next available representative..."

i have to tell you...if you can't even be on the phone when i answer it, you don't want to sell whatever-it-is-you-are-selling-that-didn't-want-in-the-first-place that badly.

PSA: July 23, 2006

let's just say you are one of those guys who is a little bit on the dorky side but you try to act cooler than you are. and let's just say that in your pursiut of cool-ness, you own a little red sports car that you bring out of the garage only on weekends when take your wife out for a drive and then come home to wash & wax it. let's also say that you & your wife have to leave your every day cars in the driveway because you must park the little red sports car in the very center of the garage (presumably so nothing has the opportunity hurt it? not sure, just guessing. i mean the car is pretty little...).

well let's just say that when you didn't return the baby to her spacious living quarters last night...and when i come out of my front door to put my dog out at 7:15am and notice your sprinklers running along the side of the driveway where the baby has been left, i'm really sorry but i'm going to have to laugh.

did i mention that the little red sports car is a convertible? and that the top was left down? >=]

i am so mean. but it's funny. ::attempts to look sheepish::

hmmmmm...is that thunder i hear rumbling? i wonder why you went out this afternoon & the baby still sits in the driveway, rolled back to sit in the sunshine (for drying out purposes perhaps?)...top down...when EVERYONE knows that summer in FL always has an afternoon thunderstorm.

BAHAHAHAHAHA!

Thirteen Reasons Why I Am So Late Posting My TT This Week

1. i was way too busy emailing with my friends today. what can i say? they entertain me & prevent me from thinking of clever TT topics!

2. there is a project at work that WILL NOT be completed. i kid you not. every time i think this thing is done, it crops up again. and since they don't pay me to blog...well...*shrug*

3. the Red Sox had a day game today & when the Sox play, i must pay close attention to what is happening. there is much commentary to be shared. and i was supposed to also be working remember.

4. i really couldn't think of anything i felt was worthy of being my TT!

5. i just cannot be an over achiever like someone i know who has these things prepared days in advance

6. i had the attention span of a gnat today when it came to concentrating on *anything*. i think maybe that never-ending project has tapped out my ability to stay focused.

7. my desk is in a very central location at work. everything happens around me. and i feel the need to be nosy & take it all in.

8. i work with people who leave me way too many opportunities to poke fun or make wisecracks or otherwise tease, torture & taunt. it kept distracting me from the TT task at hand.

9. have i mentioned being easily distracted today? (except from the Red Sox game)

10. ice cream

11. when i came home from work, i ate dinner right away.

12. then i took a nap.

13. i could have made this TT yet another baseball *ahem* Red Sox related entry which would have come very easily for me but i was afraid i would start a revolt. so instead, you get this very lame list of excuses why i am late & on top of it, there will still be a baseball *ahem* Red Sox related blog entry to follow.

where i was the last four days

as the countdown in my right sidebar sadly indicates, Alison was here this weekend. the "sadly" is because she went home yesterday--i haven't been able to bring myself to taking it off there yet. i just have to remind myself that in just 33 weeks, she will be back again. =) and i have another important guest coming in a few months too. ;-)

we spent the long weekend watching baseball on tv (and alternately bashing the Yankees & the Red Sox to one another since she is misguided enough to be brainwashed by The Evil Empire. =P LOL); laughing at the fact that the whole time she was here, it was hotter in CT than it was in FL (and it was certainly anything but cool here, i assure you!); and on Saturday, we braved the heat, humidity & tourists to check out Sea World. i thought i'd share a few of my favorite photos but just to warn you...there are no photos of Alison & i. we were a sweaty, droopy, red-faced mess before we even made it through the line to get her ticket (i have a 2-year FL resident pass), so we agreed to just take lots of photos in March. =)

let this be a lesson to you. when your home is invaded by a hundred thousand tiny black ants & they cover half the wardrobe that is hanging in your closet, DO NOT ask "can this week *get* any worse??" because the answer is YES, yes it can.

you can drive innocently down the road & some sharp phantom object will leave a 4" slice in your tire causing it to blow out.

btw it WILL be raining while all of this happens. and do NOT get yours hopes up when not one but THREE of FL's finest drive past you, pulled over on the side of the roads with your hazards flashing & do not even so much as glance in your direction.

268-freaking-dollars later, i have a new tire & an exterminated home. don't you all wish you were me now??

Monday Music Mambo - Week 101

Hi everyone! Have a good weekend? Today is Keep The Change Day, but I don't know how to make that into a musical meme. So we'll make a playlist instead.

A song you love a lot right now:
"Ever the Same", Rob Thomas
A song that came out in your senior year of high school: "Crazy", Aerosmith
A song about a woman: "She's Always a Woman to Me", Billy Joel
A song with curse words: "It's Been a While", Staind
A song with a great guitar solo: "November Rain", Guns N' Roses
A song by a Canadian: "Thought I'd Died and Gone to Heaven", Bryan Adams
A song you hate: "You're Beautiful", James Blunt
A song other people hate but you love: i'm sure there are a bunch but nobody has ever come right out & told me that they hated a song i love.
A song covered by at least two other bands or artists: "Please Come to Boston", originally done by Dave Loggins, covered by both Kenny Chesney & Reba McEntire
A song without vocals: "Angel Eyes", Jim Brickman

2. If you had a choice of being a carnivore or a herbivore, which one would you be, and why? no way could i pick! i like a well balanced meal.

4. What's your feelings on stormy weather? i love it...as long as it isn't a hurricane
5. Do you believe in "time out" chairs? yes i do. i don't have children but i did daycare for years & i was a firm believer in time out when necessary. i also exercise time out for my pup when he misbehaves--into his crate he goes. the key is to be consistent without overusing.
6. Have you ever bought or sold anything on Ebay? never. i never even really look at Ebay.

~Saturday Morning Cartoons~
June 4, 2006

By the way...
Once upon a time before the invention of cable and satellite TV
and the Cartoon Network there was Saturday morning cartoons.
Whether or not you can remember that far back...

What cartoons were your favorite?
Loony Tunes
Do you remember any of the theme songs? yep!
Were you up before dawn watching the test pattern waiting for cartoons to come on? nope. i knew what time they came on & i would read a book or play with my paper dolls until they started.

ants in my pants

and i do mean *literally*. OMG.

nothing like walking into your closet after you shower to find hundreds of tiny little black ants happily marching all over the clean clothes hanging there. is NOTHING off limits?? and just what do they think they are finding there?? took me forever to find an ant-free top & pair of pants that matched each other...and i am still itchy just thinking about them.

everything on that side of my closet is being boiled in the hottest water the washing machine can muster & now instead of smelling like fresh clean laundry (mmmm...Bounce dryer sheets...), my closet reeks of Raid.

make no mistake. the ants have had their last hurrah in my house. i am calling in the big guns now.

effing ants.
please shoot me.

shift. this.

"I've never been so happy to get out of here with a win in my life," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. (Redsox.com) me too, Tito...me too. and the rest of RSN & everybody who suits up in a Red Sox uniform 162 times a year i would suspect.

they did it though. in the eleventh hour of this series, my boys came through by getting themselves on the board first & not relinquishing their lead, no way, no how. held on by claws...teeth...sheer will to come out on top...praying that Papelbon can make his entrance (errr...walk from the park bench "bullpen") on 3 days off & help them win with their measly one run lead...until...

Boston Dirt Dogs: (Frank Galasso, cartoonist)

...Big Papi knocks off his Big Crappy routine & seals the deal in the 9th, bases loaded, no one out. no one but the ball which is probably still sailing. oh. right. it can't still be sailing in a (stupid) dome. but it's embedded firmly in the wall at least. or dancing a merry jig with the long balls assisted from the park by Manny, Mirabelli & its older sibling, the Big Papi 2-run homer in the 5th. i know there will be some who are disenchanted by & critical of Ortiz watching his first home run of the game make its grand exit, calling him arrogant, but really? even though it bugs me too to see showboating of that nature, generally speaking, i can't help but think Papi had the right to do that, considering it was Joe Maddon's execution of the shift that has had some crippling effects on David's hitting this season. the little kid that still exists inside me almost wished he would look the Rays' manager in the eye & give him a big wet PPPPPFFFFTTTT!! before rounding the bags. almost. ;-)

"Pretty much what they're trying to do is get in my head," Ortiz said. "I've got to stay with the same approach. I just figured that hitting the ball up there, no way they can catch it. They've really been playing some extreme defense, so I've got to stay where the ball is and try to hit it as hard as I can." (FOXSports.com)

or as Jerry Remy put it: "The only way to make a successful shift against this guy is to put a position player in the third row of the bleachers." all i know is...man is it pretty to watch him go yard.

found this little tidbit & had to share before moving along to a few other non-Ortiz-centered thoughts:
After yet another monster night, David Ortiz, fresh out of the shower, looked to the chair next to him and saw a stack of $20 bills.

"Is that my money?" Ortiz, a little confused, asked multiple times.

Coco Crisp finally came over and solved the mystery, grabbing the stack of bills and putting them in his wallet. Ortiz then busted out laughing and told reporters, "You know how I knew that wasn't my money?"

He then opened a container filled with $100 bills and bellowed out, "This is how I roll!"
(Redsox.com) LOL! well we don't pay him the big bucks for nothing. ;-)

wait! just one more! last one, i promise! i wonder if Duh-wayne & the Migraine think Carl Crawford qualifies for this too? Crawford, who can only dream of being Mr. Clutch the way that Ortiz is.

(Image: Brian G)

As usual with Wakefield, he never let on to outsiders how much he was hurting entering this start. (Redsox.com) between Wakey & Lowell, gritting their teeth & playing through the pain, i wonder where we'd be if these guys were playing healthy....all i know is that for someone pitching injured, i'll take 5 innings of what he had last night. the fluttery dancing of that knuckleball is something to behold when it's working its magic. i hope the 6-day rest is enough for Timmy to get back to feeling good though. we do NOT need to find him on the DL. our pitching woes are miserable enough with the likes of Johnson seemingly entrenched in the 5-spot of the rotation. the one *good* thing i can say about the relief though is that minus the EZs (need i even point that out??), we have a couple of guys in there that have been doing some work. and i don't mean the blatantly obvious "set-'em-up & shut-'em-down" team. Craig Hansen is starting to come around, enough so that i do not cringe when i see him warming in the pen (or the dirt at the side of the field as the case may be in *some* domes). and how about Lil' Manny?? he's stepped up nicely on several calls for help now and i actually feel a sense of...can it be?...confidence when they bring him in. at first, i thought it was just the relief of not seeing Julian (or Rudy. or Javier.), but now i am noticing that his appearances are looking better & better. nowhere near the feelings of resolve yet as when Timlin and/or Papelbon come in, but a far cry better than how i was feeling a few weeks ago when i saw Tito or The Nip reach for the bullpen phone, that knot of dread as my stomach sunk, knowing it was way too early to call in the only two guys i was willing to pin my hopes on at that point. but now there is consistency from the baby faces of Hansen & Delcarmen and my heart rate is returning a little closer to the range of "normal".

i think i am going to keep this next part in the back of my head for the sake of my sanity:
Bob Ryan gives us a pep talk:

I suppose you want to know what's going on. Baseball's going on. The Big 162. The ebb and the flow. ... You guys are supposed to be seasoned fans. That's what I keep hearing. ... I promise you they'll all be looking back at these three nights at some future date and laugh. ... [R]ight now the oppressor is baseball. But don't worry. There are 80 games left. ... They'll be just fine.

We know all this, of course, but it's maddening just the same. However, I also recall writing back on August 7, 2004 that "this summer hasn't been a whole lot of fun ... even the victories have left me pissed off" and asking is this "The Most Frustrating Red Sox Season Ever"?
(The Joy of Sox)
i guess i just got so used to seeing the Red Sox as the victors that this little post-euphoric slip in Tampa came as a bit of a shock to my system. they'll be ok. they will hit again. they showed me last night. BELIEVE.

and with that, done in the dome. onward to Chicago to take on the 2005 World Champs & their lunatic manager. should scare me but...i'm just happy we're getting the hell out of The Trop. Little Jon Lester gets the start tonight...and i'm nervous but not as nervous as i thought i would be. here's hoping we make this next series a winning one somehow & then a solid 3 day rest for the team with the 3rd best record in MLB.

i could live the rest of my life without Tampa pro sports teams

things that irritate me about "The Trop":

1. Dwayne Staats and Joe Magrane. the stupid 70s hair. the innane commentary. the freaking delusion that the Rays are a great ball team.

2. they insist on calling David Ortiz "Dave". listen. if you aren't going to refer to him by his last name, then it's David or Big Papi. you aren't his buddy. you don't get to call him Dave. the most familiar you are allowed to get with him is Papi. that's it. now knock it off.

3. it's a dome. i HATE domes. and i firmly believe that if you want to build a dome ball field then you aren't allowed to do so unless you can afford to make the roof retractable. and you may only close it on account of rain. period. baseball is an outdoor sport. (so is football but that's got nothing to do with the price of tea in China. not till September anyway.)

4. "house rules". namely ones that benefit only the home team. for example: ball hit by A-Gon hits speaker but lands in fair territory & is dropped by pitcher = foul ball. ball hitting the "C ring" by Rays player and bouncing back onto the field = home run. ball hit by Youk off the "B ring" and bouncing back onto the field & caught = a fly out. just who makes up these rules??

5. just because Carl Crawford steals home does not mean we are looking at an all star player. get OVER it. we are NOT looking at the most exciting player in Major League baseball. and if you are awed by him, maybe you ought to at least LOOK at the other teams you play against. he's a *good* player but there are a lot of other players out there who are a lot better. 'nuff said.

6. Manny Ramirez sitting out of the All Star Game does not have anything to do with "Manny being Manny" you asshats. Manny sitting out of the game is because Manny has been having knee & back trouble for a couple of months now & he is electing to make a decision based on his health & needing to be a healthy part of his team's line up for the second half of the season. he is showing responsibility to his team by bowing out & giving his spot to the next guy in line. i will point out to you that this person is NOT Carl Crawford.

7. a park bench & a strip of dirt along the sidelines for warming up while constantly needing to check over your shoulder for foul balls lining your direction is *not* a bullpen. are you seriously THAT cheap??

thank Nichole for this one. in fact, i urge you. click on that link & go right over there & thank her yourself. i just know once you get there that you'll love her as much as i do. =)

1. Have you ever been searched by the cops?
nope. just the security personnel at WDW.

2. Do you close your eyes on a roller coaster?
nope. i do not RIDE roller coasters. *barf*

3. When's the last time you've been sledding?
oh jeeeez...uhhhh...the winter after senior year of high school i think? or maybe it was during that year. i went with a bunch of people up to BCHS (where i went to high school) & we slid down the giant hills leading to the football field. and then we went for hot chocolate. and for the record, that was more than a dozen years ago. =)

4. Would you rather sleep with someone else, or alone?
i sleep much better alone these days.

5. Do you believe in ghosts?
yes i do. and angels. and all sorts of things we can't readily explain with mere logic. i think there is far more of this world than we want to admit exists because we can't wrap our minds around it...but that doesn't mean it isn't real.

6. Do you consider yourself creative?
i think we all have the potential to be creative but like any other skill, it requires exercise & use or it stagnates.

7. Do you think O.J. killed his wife?
i think...that i wasn't there & i would hate to say someone's guilty without the proof before my very own eyes. but if it looks like a duck...and walks like a duck...odds are...

8. Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie?
Jen. Jen. Jen. i have a really personal issue with "the other woman"...and how Brangelina handled itself was all too familiar ground for me--i hold them both equally responsible. i've said it before and i'll say it now: yes i know they aren't together any more. i'm not over it. Jenn'll probably be over it before i am.

9. Can you honestly say you know ANYTHING about politics?
enough to sound semi-intelligent and like i don't live under a rock. then again, what more is there to politics these days than mud-slinging, lying through one's teeth & drama? it's like high school all over again...only with higher stakes.

10. Do you know how to play poker?
no clue. and have no interest. plus i am a terrible liar. i laugh. no poker face for me!

11. Have you ever been awake for 48 hours straight?
i don't believe so. i am sure that i must have dozed off at least a little bit even if i was up for most of it.

12. What's your favorite commercial?
ooooohhhhhh...a definite tie. there's the Peyton Manning Mastercard commercial where he is in the diner (D CAF! *bang bang*D CAF! *bang bang*). and the Gatorade commercial that's on now ("shut your big head up!"). and i love the Foxwoods commercials when the Red Sox games on Extra Innings are shown on NESN--especially the one with "the lucky chip" or the one themed like The Wizard of Oz ("The wonderrrr...of it all! Fox. Woods.).

13. Who was your first love?
ahhh...love. next question?

14. If you're driving in the middle of the night, and no one is around you, do you run a red light?
no because i know that as soon as i do, there will be one of FL's finest hidden behind a bush somewhere just waiting to pull me over.

15. Do you have a secret that no one knows but you?
no i do not.

16. Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees?
say WHAT?? look around you (here in the blog i mean). what do YOU think??

17. Have you ever been Ice Skating?
requires far too much coordination on a slippery surface for that to possibly be a good idea. and not a soft enough landing. =P

18. How often do you remember your dreams?
as long as i wake up on my own & not by being rudely ripped from a sleeping state, i can remember every vivid detail. and believe me when i tell you that some are worth remembering just for sharing purposes.

19. What's the one thing on your mind?
the one thing? ONE thing. ONE. *snort* yeah right. there isn't enough room on this blog. or the internet.

20. Do you always wear your seat belt?
always. it goes on as soon as i get into the car. when i was a kid, my dad had me convinced that the car would not, COULD not, move unless seatbelts were fastened. pretty clever huh?

21. What talent do you wish you had?
clever *timely* comebacks. ;-)

22. Do you like Sushi?
i've tried little bits of it. some of the textures kind of disturb me.

23. What do you wear to bed?
tank tops and pj pants... or track pants. *giggle*

24. Do you truly hate anyone?
i don't lean in the direction of hate. the closest i get to that is extreme apathy. indifference. or if i am going to feel something, hurt. but i don't waste my energy on hate.

25. If you could sleep with one famous person, who would it be?
sleep with? what happened to 'have dinner with'?! i don't sleep with people just because. not even hypothetically.

26. Do you know anyone in jail?
i've known people who have been in jail. none that are there at the moment though.

27. What food do you find disgusting?
there are foods that i do not care for but find actually disgusting?? liver & onions ranks right up there. oysters. cottage cheese. any sort of hot cereal.

28. Have you ever made fun of your friends behind their back?
not as an adult. i've made fun of former friends though. heh. Thing 1.

29. Have you ever been punched in the face?
no & i hope never to be. i would cry.

30. Do you believe in angels and demons?
i refer you to question 5.

i could just watch animals for hours...these particular creatures call Busch Gardens (Tampa) their home & were my personal favorites. the little gorilla baby is 7 months old & he is just like watching a human baby of the same age. his little face was so sweet & his mama was so attentive to him. it was fascinating to watch them interacting. and that little chimp was a riot, doing tumbles & stalking things in the grass, totally putting on a show for the people watching him, hamming it up & laughing at himself! =)

there is nothing better than Italian pasta salad on a hot day. yum. and it's so simple, you can throw it together in less than 20 minutes, start to finish. mine is just halved grape tomatoes, sliced black olives & diced green pepper--and pasta of course, with some Roasted Red Pepper Italian dressing. you could also add cucumber (i didn't have one) or diced onion if you prefer (which i don't!). the only thin that possibly makes this better is when you eat it as left overs & the salad gets to marinate in the dressing over night. *happy sigh*

some things never change

if i have to listen to the Sunshine Network guys complain one more time that Carl Crawford got snubbed not being voted into the All Star game, i am driving down to The Trop to duct tape their mouths shut! just try me.

they spent the whole game last night whining about how Crawford was at least as good as the three staters who got voted in for the American League.

As. If.

they are trying to tell me that Carl Crawford is more of an All Star than Manny Ramirez? Vernon Wells? Ichiro Suzuki? you've got to be kidding me, right?

Carl Crawford leads only one category: stolen bases, and is tied for AL leader in triples. of the four, he is 2nd in batting average, hits & runs scored, but only by a margin; is third in doubles, home runs & RBIs; and dead last in OBP. not to mention his team is 2nd to worst in the AL. oh & the fact that NO ONE outside of the Tampa area has any idea who he is! c'mon! even 2/3 of the crowd attending a Devil Rays game is there to see the opposing team!

i've said it before & i have no doubt i'll be saying it again: the Tampa sports announcers live in their own fantasy land where every Tampa team is a championship team & when they lose, it is a product of favoritism toward the opponent, not poor playing by the Devil Rays (Lightning, Bucs).

and of course anyone would give up the likes of Manny Ramirez, Vernon Wells or Ichiro Suzuki to get CRAWFORD on their team. Carl who?? =P

the one in which my blood runs cold

i should be rejoicing. a win! and HUGE hitting for Wakefield last night. Manny & Papi at 2 homers a piece. the (stupid) scoreboard robbing Lowell of two long balls & Papi of his third, but awarding them stand up doubles & RBIs. the boys opened it up & restored their pride after the whooping they received the night before, coming to the plate with magical bats of steel instead of Twinkies & overcooked spaghetti noodles. i should be glowing over the fact that the Yankees lost & now share the "4 games out of first" spot with the Blue Jays--and because the Sox have managed to start out July on exactly the right foot. there were records set & milestones reached. and even though i was relegated to listening to WEEI online & watching the stats on Gameday because the Sunshine Network decided that instead of the promised baseball game, they would show two Chinese women boxing & replays of the Special Olympics, i was still dancing with delight over the multiple proclamations of "Way back! Way back! This ball is GOOOONE!"

instead i bring you...this...

i read something this morning on The Joy of Sox that could have come straight from my own head: Since I often rip Terry Francona for various transgressions (both real and imagined!)... *ahem* often more real than imagined, unfortunately...

truly though...i can't figure out just what in the hell is up with his over-managing the pitching this year. he can't just leave it alone & make his decisions based upon how his starter is doing instead of what appears to be rigidly following some pre-selected pitching schedule he has created alongside the day's batting order. (for someone who will appreciate it: "No schedule for you!" *whack*) i see him pulling starters that are still on the money for no other apparent reason than pitch count, which, while important to consider & monitor, isn't as black & white as simply reaching 100. i've heard more than one pitcher state that sometimes you can throw 115 more comfortably in one game than 85 in other games--15 pitches over 100 can be a whole extra inning from your starter! and more importantly, prevent the use of the EZs. or even worse is when it appears as though the decision is based on what inning it is. "oops! 7th inning! time for Julian Tavarez to come in & lose the game for us! look--it's right here in the game script, see?"

to be fair, other than a few other minor comments he's made that have made me shake my head in disbelief (like only needing 4 pitchers in the rotation or having Wily Mo back Youk at first base, for example), i do believe that Tito knows what he's doing. i'm just a little baffled by his pitching choices is all.

this following quote though may push me over the edge. especially when you look at who said it...and who is responsible for making this happen, if indeed it does:

Johnson admitted to feeling a bit nervous last night: I had a lot of adrenaline going the first couple innings, my first start with Boston and stuff. I was trying to go out there and impress guys, trying to throw a little too hard, falling off the mound a little bit. ... Over the last two innings, I settled down and threw the ball where I wanted. ... I'm just going to go out there five days from now and pitch against Tampa and work at getting the ball down right off the bat.

now i ask you, JASON JOHNSON WHAT?? he can't seriously be pitching in Tampa. i thought for sure he'd be gone after that showing Friday night. i mean...i mean...(look! i am reduced to sputtering!) Kyle Snyder got a WIN & David Pauley showed incredible poise, giving up hits but not very many runs, even if he was cited at the losing pitcher. and they both got shipped back to AAA. and Jason Johnson is pitching again in Tampa?? well so sayeth the Probable Pitchers report on the Red Sox website.

i have to tell you...if Jason Johnson keeps his spot...and upon Matt Clement's return, which is looking imminent at this point (queue up the horror movie music!), Lester finds himself on the bus back to Pawtucket...well, i don't know what. i am actually completely incapable of forming the rest of this thought--the preceding statement is *that* distressing.

i hope he enjoys feeling like this because i, for one, do not.

ready for some more "this is me"?

couldn't resist borrowing this from Jamie-James =)

1.) What curse word do you use the most?
i'm not much of a user of profanity. i guess probably ass or bitch would score the highest, not sure which. you're much more likely to hear damn or hell come out of my mouth than anything else.

2.) Do you own an iPod?
i do not. i live behind the times. the way i love music though, you would think that i would. of course, at the rate i utilize my email, you'd also think i would have some variation of a Blackberry-like device & i don't have that either.

3.) Who on your Myspace "Top 8" do you talk to the most?
i don't MySpace. i only blog.

4.) What time is your alarm clock set for?
5:45am but i only need it if i go to bed after 11:45pm. i wake up automatically after 6 hours of sleep, no alarm required.

5.) What color is your room?
which room? i have 8 of them. =)

6.) Flip flops or sneakers?
sneakers

7.) Would you rather take the picture or be in the picture?
like Jamie, i would rather take it but instead of doing my best to avoid the camera as i did in the past, i am now making an effort to be *in* some of them as well.

8.) What was the last movie you watched?
just today, "What Lies Beneath" and "The Others"

9.) Do any of your friends have children?
more of them do than don't at this point

10.) Has anyone ever called you lazy?
occasionally. sometimes joking. sometimes i am feeling lazy. sometimes it's me pointing it out.

11.) Do you ever take medication to help you fall asleep faster?
no. i don't require much sleep but when my body is ready for it, it just shuts down.

12.) What CD is currently in your CD player?
"Break the Cycle", Staind

13.) Do you prefer regular or chocolate milk?
i prefer NO milk. i don't like the way whole milk coats my mouth & anything less than whole milk is just a variation on cloudy water. if i have to have actual milk, it has to be no less than 2% & in my cereal.

14) Has any one told you a secret this week?
yep.

15) What do you look at everyday that you hate?
a world of uncertainty.

16.) Who was the last person to call you?
someone who knew i needed it. =)

17.) Do you think people talk about you behind your back?
i think Jamie's answer is pretty accurate--maybe not *everyone*, but lots of people: Everyone talks about everyone behind their back.

18.) Did you watch cartoons as a child?
sure did!

19.) How many siblings do you have?
2. one full brother, one half.

20.) Are you shy around the opposite sex?
i am sometimes shy around men *and* women. has nothing to do with what gender they are.

As Good As It Gets. Serendipity.

22.) Do you own any band t-shirts?
nope. i don't own many t-shirts of any sort.

any sort of Italian. the zestier the better.

24.) Do you read for fun?
yes. i used to do it more but i still enjoy it when i find a book that looks interesting.

25.) Do you cry a lot?
not usually but lately...? *sigh* i hate being a freaking girl sometimes. especially when it strikes out of nowhere & for no obvious reason. then i just feel stupid.

26.) Chocolate Or Vanilla?
it really depends on what i am choosing the flavor of.

27.) Do you have a desktop computer or a laptop?
desktop. a laptop with a wireless connection would be wonderful though.

28.) Are you currently wanting any piercings or tattoo?
no and no.

29.) What is the weather like?
82* (at 8:06am no less!) & something along the lines of 94% humidity. not much of a breeze either. in a word? yuck. but i'll take this over ice & slush any day of the week.

30.) Would you ever date someone covered in tattoos?
probably not. nothing against the guy. i just don't find tha attractive.

31.)If you could have any ridiculous job that paid you awesomely what would it be?
just the one i have. i LOVE my job.

32.) When was the last time you slept on the floor?
so long ago that i can't even guess. maybe during the hurricanes 2 years ago?

33.) How many hours of sleep do you need to function?
to function? at least 4. anything less than my 6 hours will usually result in a nap at some point.

34.) If your job was to be a character walking around at Disneyland, who would you be?
a character that is a person & not one of those enormous costumes. not only are those hot but i am sure i would find a way to trip & hurt myself. =P not sure which person character though...what do you think?

35.) Are your days full and fast-paced?
BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! do you know who you're asking that? i gave up full & fast-paced when i moved to FL. and i have to admit, i love my quiet, laid-back life.

36.) Do you pay attention to calories on the back of packages?
what's a calorie? ;-)

37.) How old will you be turning on your next birthday?
the big 3-0. a lot of people are taking pleasure in harassing me about that. let them try. i really don't care. it's just a number. sorry to spoil your fun!

38.) Are you picky about spelling and grammar?
i am going to preface this by saying, don't go there--and you know who you are! *giggle* ;-) my own errors bother me far more than someone else's errors. amen to this Jamie!: On stuff like blog posting, yes. If I post and re-read, and it's spelled wrong I'll go back and fix it.

39.) Have you ever been to Six Flags?
i think i may have been to one or two but i don't recall for certain which ones. and they might have actually be Busch Gardens parks. i have no clue.

40.) Do you get along better with the same or opposite sex?
i think guys are *much* easier to get along with. they aren't all two-faced & back-stabbing the way girls are. if a guy has a problem with you, he'll pretty much tell it like it is instead of acting like every thing is fine & then turning around & being vicious the second you walk away. and again there's Jamie's answer which may explain why i like her so much!: Depends. Usually the opposite sex. Unless it's girls who usually get along better with guys. Then for some reason we hang well. :)

41.) Do you like Cottage Cheese?
ewwww...looks like very old milk to me. and if you've been paying attention here, you know how i feel about milk.

42.) Do you sleep on your side, tummy, or back?
where ever i find a comfy spot. i'm not picky and there's no position i HAVE to be in to sleep. when i find a good spot, i settle in & sleep.

43.) Have you ever bid for something on eBay?
i've browsed but never bid. not much of a spender.

44.) Do you enjoy giving hugs?
as a rule, i do not like anyone inside my personal space...but for those who *are* allowed inside, there's nothing like a good hug. =)

45) What song did you last sing out loud?
i haven't actually driven my car since Thursday afternoon & since i only sing in the car alone, i don't remember now what i last sang. it was something though, i am sure. i sing along to a lot of songs as i drive.

46) What is your favorite TV show?
Boston Legal if i have to pick just one

47) Which celebrity dead or alive would you want to have lunch with?

Now it's cold and we're scared
And we've both been shaken
Hey, look at us
Man, this doesn't need to be the end
