having it MY way

i can't even tell you when i last ate burger king. (ok actually yes i can but that's not important right now. or at least not the point. we'll just say it's been a while & move on if that's all right with you. if that's not all right with you...well...this is MY blog & you'll have to live with it. get your own blog & then you can have it YOUR way. lol...)

so i got a chicken sandwich. i am reading the wrapper & totally cracking up. try explaining to people why a sandwich wrapper is soooo funny. it's worth it just to see the looks you can elicit. since you can't give me looks while you read this--or if you do, i'll never be the wiser since my monitor doesn't look directly into yours--i am going to actually share with you what i find so amusing. you can laugh or not but like i said, MY BLOG. =P

on one end of the wrapper it says:

they say you are what you eat. they're wrong. you are no chicken. you know how you want it and you're bold enough to make sure you get it your way. that's why you're here, isn't it?

on another side it reads:

you know what they say: originals order originals. and you're proof. they broke the mold when they made you, didn't they? oh yeah.

and on the top is printed:

you have the right to have things your way. the right to a sandwich just how you want it. the right to eat it fast. the right to eat it slow. the right to start your own sandwich etiquette school. the right to have a one-man sandwich eating contest. the right to raise this wrapper above your head as a sign that you are king.

and last but not least on the bag is the following message:

french fries that have attempted to escape from their container only to strand themselves in the bottom of the bag are called "bagglers". bagglers are fair game. the first to open the bag and retrieve the baggler gets to eat the baggler. therefore, it is in one's best interest to be the keeper of the bag.

if you know me in any capacity, you know that i love food. i am especially loving food with some attitude lol...and a wrapper with personality.

live a little. laugh a lot. find humor everywhere around you.

she tries to explain to them...

i love when song lyrics speak to me. yes i finally went out & bought the new kenny chesney cd. it's not so much country as really mellow with alot of tropical island feel to it. steel drums & the like. sooo relaxing. i haven't taken it out of my car cd player since i walked out of walmart with it 5 days ago.

as usual, i digress lol.

there are bits & pieces of that whole cd that just touch my musical soul. i am sure they will all surafce here at one time or another but today's lyrics comes from "she's from boston"--and it's not for the obvious reasons that this song fits me in this case. (yes i realize i am not really from boston anyway but it's still new england, still part of where i came from...anyway off on yet another tangent.)

She never really knew how good it would feel
To finally find herself in a place so warm and real

never having set a foot in this state prior to the day i arrived here, i had no idea. sure i miss people & places from CT but i feel like i was born for the warmth & the slowed down pace of the FL lifestyle. even when it's rushed, it's not at that breakneck speed from up north--and i find when it's most rushed down here anyway, it's not by locals, but by tourists, probably those from up north. people down here are different too. they will chat & they are warm. this life feels good to me & i feel like i was meant to take this journey. i've learned alot about myself that i couldn't have discovered without coming here.

The girl she was in New England
Is different now and dead
while i am still me & always will be, i am definitely not the same girl in some very defining ways. i am not under the same sort of pressure to make everyone around me happy at my own expense. i don't feel like i need to impress anyone. i have evolved into someone who is learning to better understand herself & what i want from the world. i won't ever be the same girl i was back then...and i am more than ok with that.

Talks to her family now and then
Through e-mails and postcards
She tries to explain to them...
Her dreams have changed somehow
i know that i will never be able to make them understand how at home i feel here. i miss them. i wish there was a way to make the distance less & see them more but just as they aren't really wanting to relocate to FL, this is home to me & i am happy here. i can't explain to them why because i guess i *should* want to be close to those most important to me but how do i tell them that i still am in the ways the truly matter. and as much as no one who knew me before would have ever guessed that i would even consider moving 1200 miles away from where i grew up, let alone be happy & content here, this has been good for me. i may want different things than i did & i may be a different version of myself, but i am still their dawn...just a little further way & with a bit more confidence in myself to be ok out on my own.

Her toes dig deep and deeper in the sand
She's seduced by the sunsets and her new life at hand
i may not be on the beach all that much but i am digging in deep & deeper here. i have a hard time imagining myself anywhere else. even when the darn hurricanes huff & ouff & try to blow my house down. i *am* seduced by the sunsets--i've never seen anything like them here in FL. and i am captivated by so much of the peaceful tropical beauty that surrounds me. i miss autumn in new england & white Christmases...but there is just something about this area that has me hooked. and i can't wait to see where this new life will bring me next...

guess i just need to remind you all that you *can* come down & visit me here!

=)

just a little fun for my fellow red sox fans

which red sox player are you?

my results...

You Are: David Ortiz
You are "Mr. Clutch". You are content to wait on the bench until your turn at bat. You don't make too much noise until the game is on the line. You aren't too flashy or the loudest in the crowd, but whenever the Sox need you, you deliver. Big Papi.

what i love about sunday

again inspired by the lyrics of a country song: That's What I Love About Sunday by Craig Morgan

**it's still quiet at 9:15am...well except for the dog snoring like a buzzsaw lol

**the sunday paper waiting outside stuffed to the gills with such wonderful things as sales flyers & coupons & the comics. yep I only read the fluff lol.

**grocery-shopping. call me crazy but there is something comforting about unloading all those bags to see the cabinets & refrigerator fully stocked again.

**the way the whole house smells of clean laundry & Bounce dryer sheets

**nowhere to go & nothing to do leave endless possibilities. even if i don't do a darn thing, the fact that i *could* feels great.

**the country music top 40 countdown on
97.5FM WPCV which may be the best country radio station i have found yet. old stuff. new stuff. good radio personalities. they don't play the same top 10 songs over & over all day long. AND i just discovered that they finally have a link to let you listen online!

**that i know when i get up tomorrow to go to work, it will not be with dread or trepidation or any of those other feelings that used to make me want to hide in bed on sunday, in denial of the fact that the weekend was nearly over. i LOVE that i can say "i love my job!"

here's the question

So I finally watched "The Notebook" today. I am probably the last girl around to finally do so. What an awesome love story. Sad (I won't ruin it in case there are possibly a couple more of you who haven't gotten around to seeing this yet...) but sad in a way that makes it that much more real. The tidy little happy endings that Hollywood leaves us with unfortunately don't replicate themselves in real life all that often. So the sadness is sweet. And real.

But more than that, there is this one scene in the movie that has grabbed onto my brain. Noah & Allie are facing one another & facing an inevitable choice. And she doesn't know what to do. She knows that nothing about this choice will be easy because it never is when the choices are about love & people who matter to you. And Noah asks her this (and I paraphrase as best I can from memory): "What do you want? Forget about what I want, what your parents want, what he wants. What do YOU want Allie? WHAT DO YOU WANT?"

How come it seems we can never answer that question for ourselves? We base everything on what makes everyone around us happy but it will never be right until we can admit to ourselves what it is WE want. Sure love is about sacrifice & about putting someone else before ourselves. But in order to get to a place where we can live that kind of love, before we stand a chance at really being happy, somehow we need to find the answer to that question.

What do you want...?

More thinking.

nothing interesting

it occurs to me that i don't have anything interesting to say this morning. which poses the question "why am i here?" not in the broad sense, but here as in HERE lol, logged into this thing, essentially talking about nothing? maybe it's the thought that someone out there is checking in to see if i've posted anything new...maybe i just like to hear myself talk pointlessly & doing so here makes it look a little less crazy. who knows? lol

and i have nothing on the agenda for today to make myself sound better than the average bear. (makes me wonder why anyone WOULD check in to see if i have rambled on...LOL)

went over to the magic kingdom last night for a couple of hours. saw the newly re-opened "it's a small world". was worth it just to see the fresh new exterior & the transformation that the boarding que received. pretty cool stuff! (again, if i had a digital camera, i could share my photos NOW but alas you will have to wait until i finish another 14 shots on a roll of film & then remember to get it processed with the vague hope that something came out worth sharing). the inner workings are all still much the same but you can actually understand the soundtrack once again, everything is bright with a facelift of new paint & i can't be certain but i *think* the little singing doll-children (ok THAT sounds creepy lol!!) got new heads, hair & hands (also kind of a creepy thought...). oh yeah & new boats to ride in. yes, i HAVE been to disney enough times to notice all these little things with ease & assurance! how jealous are you?! i am in love with the concept known as "the florida resident's seasonal pass"--that little gem has paid for itself a thousand times over by now for sure!

before i head off to a lazy morning spent on the couch, getting harrassed by the beast & his slopped up tennis ball while i watch a borrowed copy of "the notebook", just wanna say a great big HI to my homey girls (in case any of them ever think to look in on me here) who converged & descended upon seattle yesterday!! and yes i am still pouting & jealous. i'd tell you all to behave but who's kidding who?! it would be a waste of finger strokes on the keyboard. ;-)

you may now return to your regularly scheduled programs. =)

wide awake

i guess i went to bed too early. 4:04am & wide awake. not even like i had a reason to be--just...awake. and i could tell there was no falling asleep again. joy. i'll probably be under my desk napping at noon. so here i am, enjoying the dark peaceful quiet of a house asleep--you know, like *I* should be right now?? but i'm truthfully not all that upset. the quiet is my friend. =)

off to kill some time wandering the internet & reading blogs. after all, i can justify it as doing anything even remotely productive would disturb those who apparently require far more rest than i do. ;-)

at the risk of seeming shallow

what with the post a couple days ago about my pink toes & now this one, people who don't really know me in real life are going to think i am all about physical appearances...lol...you should all know the REAL truth of it! ;-)

anyway.

what is it about a good hair day? why does that have the ability to set the whole day off in the right direction of being great? does it REALLY matter in the great scheme of things? nope! but here i am having a good hair day & i am in the best mood.

maybe i am more shallow than i thought lol....

sometimes it's just the little things

for some silly reason, it makes me happy to look down & see my feet with pink toes in sandals. in APRIL none the less. for a CT girl, that's a great concept considering i think there's still snow on the ground up there & it's typically June at least before it's sandal weather. plus there's just something girly about pink toes. i'm not sure exactly when it was that i finally caved & let myself be a girly girl but i think that's my favorite color on them. what's yours? =)

Play ball!

redsox mickey (photo by me!)

Woohoo!! Another reigning champion to cheer on for a sports season. How much abuse do you suppose I'll have to endure for being a "bandwagon Redsox fan"? Of course it bears no relevance that I was born & raised in New England in a decidedly anti-New York sports teams house & the Boston teams were my "home teams" since CT doesn't have the where-with-all to support any sort of professional sports franchise. Immediately, the bitter fans of losing teams have to justify the allegiances of those who support the victor by claiming we weren't *really* fans until they won...Oh well. I'll manage. I have for 3 of the last 4 football seasons anyway so this is getting to be a commonality. So bring on the Yankees...

GO RED SOX!!

is it just me...?

...or has anyone else noticed that when something is on your mind, that subject seems to pop up EVERYWHERE. and i don't think it has anything to do with just noticing it more. it just seems to be coincidentally popping up in places like on tv shows i watch, commentary on ESPN, in the news, on the radio in the chatter between songs, names of towns...weird places that i wouldn't expect to hear it...

or maybe i have just lost what little of my mind i had left. LOL

when life gets tough...

...this girl eats ice cream.

to give you an idea, dinner consisted of a large bowl of
edy's grand special edition girl scout tagalongs cookie ice cream. nothing cures a problem like chocolate & peanut butter living happily in a sea of ice cream. dessert is an ice cream sandwich. gimme a break i waited 2 hours between them.

sometimes being a grown up is good if only for the fact that you can eat ice cream twice & call it a meal.

do i really need to justify it? a girl needs her calcium intake & i don't do milk.

sometimes photos are bittersweet...

Lake Ostego (photo by me!)

Isn't it strange what makes you homesick out of a clear blue sky? On any given day, I love my life in Florida. Don't get me wrong. Of course there are people I miss like crazy & deep down I am inherently "New England" but Florida is home now.

I was just flipping through some photos though & I came across some of Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard from a few years back. There is this tiny little town nestled into the mountains of New York named Fly Creek. It's about 20 minutes outside of Cooperstown & if you didn't wander a little way off the beaten path, you would never know it existed. Back when I still lived in CT, I used to love a day trip into this area of New York, just me & my dad. It's about a 4 hour trip up but so worth it. We are only on one small stretch of highway the whole trip & at that, it's not a very busy one. Other than that, it's all these windy backroads with quaint little towns and farm country and the Catskill Mountains, just the two of us, some good music, some conversation. We have it all down to a science. I drive the first half of the trip. We stop at McDonald's to grab my dad a coffee & a quick bathroom break. Then he drives the rest of the way. We stop at this little place we affectionately call "the fly trap" because without fail there are always a dozen or more flies trapped inside banging on the window screens--darned if we even know the real name of the place LOL--but the pastries are yummy & we grab a couple of homemade doughnuts & stretch our legs.

Then it's on the road again, next stop Fly Creek. It's this neat functioning cider mill & orchard with a country store & a snack bar. We browse the store, get some cider (which they sell "regular" and frozen so that it will keep for those who are on a trip like ours) & other goodies. Then we have a snack, complete with some hot apple cider & some sort of apple dessert: apple crisp or apple pie or hot apple topped sundaes. Yum... With our stomachs content, we hit the road again, our destination close but not before one more stop along the way. On another side road, tucked away from first glance is the
Cooperstown Brewing Company where you can take a tour of the brewery & sample some of their specialty beers. My dad always buys a case or 2 to savor during the hot summer months. He's practically on a first name basis with the brothers who own the place but this is just that sort of area: small towns where faces are familiar and people are still friendly & pleasant. Next stop for us is the ultimate destination: Cooperstown, home to The Baseball Hall of Fame. We always wander through these halls, see the memorabilia, the latest tributes. I am especially intrigued by some the photography that they display there now as well. But even if you aren't into baseball, the town still holds so much appeal. There are neat little shops all up & down Main Street that have a flavor of baseball of course, but also something distinctly New England. We aimlessly meander the street, stopping at a few old favorites (we've been doing this since I was a small child) & here too it's amazing how people stop to wave & smile, not just friendly but that look of recognition that warms the expression on their faces. My dad goes up probably 4 or 5 times from May through October (I used to make the trip with him in Ocotber for my birthday and the foliage) and these people have seen me grow up. There are a bunch of little places to eat scattered throughout "downtown" but we have our favorite places: a light lunch at the Pioneer Patio, where the owner will keep the restaurant kitchen open just for us even if he was about to lock up & he will stand behind the bar, chatting with us as we eat, talking a little baseball with my dad, always remembering my dad's favorite teams.

After lunch, we shop some more and then we drop our packages off at the car and take a long walk up & down the tiny streets, absorbing the atmosphere, looking at the houses that have all the old New England charm you would expect. We always end up on the banks of Lake Ostego (pictured above), enjoying the conversation or simply the comfortable silence. Then it's dinner at one of the restaurants "downtown" where there is a baseball theme to the establishment & they of course serve beers from the brewery we had visited earlier. We eat & relax & then as the sun is starting to set, we head for the car to start the ride home, tired from the day but that happy relaxed sort of tired that comes from a day full of time well spent. There was never any rushing around, just an easy pace. My dad drives the first leg of the trip and at McDonald's, we switch & I finish it up.

The whole trip is comforting & predictable as are the memories I have of it. It's one of the things I miss the most, being so far away now. And tonight the photos made me a bit homesick: for autumn in New England, for traditions, for my dad. But the memories are sweet & warm and they make me smile.

If you ever find yourself on a getaway to this area of New York, make sure you get yourself off the interstates & give yourself the freedom to explore, to find your own special memories. It's a place I hold near & dear to my heart...

Arisen

On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them: "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here. He has risen!" (Luke 24:1-6) Posted by Hello

I am not one of those people who talks very often about my faith & what I believe. If someone were to ask me about it, I have no problem sharing it with them but I do not often bring it up myself. I suppose there are people who think that I should but I am the quiet type in just about everything & that is reflected here as well. I simply believe what I believe in the way that I was raised--it is such a personal thing for me.

But this morning I'm going to do something slightly out of character. You may feel free to read or not read of course, but I am simply going to share what Easter means to me--surprise surprise, in the words of a song. It is an Easter hymn that I remember singing for most of my life but it professes the joy & triumph I feel in my heart when I an reminded of what Easter means to me as a Christian: By Grace through Faith I am Saved and if I Believe, Heaven will one day be my Treasure.

He's risen, He's risen, Christ Jesus the Lord
He opened Death's prison, the Incarnate Word
Break forth hosts of heaven in jubilant song
And earth, sea and mountain, the paean prolong.

The Foe was triumphant when on Calvary
The Lord of creation was nailed to the tree
In Satan's domain did the hosts shout & jeer
For Jesus was slain whom the evil ones fear.

But short was their triumph, the Savior arose
And Death, hell and Satan, He vanquished His foes
The conquering Lord lifts His banner on high
He lives, yea, He lives and will never more die.

Oh where is thy sting Death? We fear thee no more
Christ rose and now open is fair Eden's door
For all our transgressions His blood does atone
Redeemed and forgiven, we now are His own.

If you believe as I believe, then today you know peace & joy. If you believe something else, then I wish you a happy day to celebrate Spring & rebirth & a new season. Whatever you believe, I wish you a very Happy Easter.
