Flower and Garden Fest 2015: Round One

Well. This week has gotten away from me. Last Saturday, I hit my initial round of this year's Flower and Garden Fest. It took me til last night to actually get the photos off my various cameras and into my web albums. And so far, I've only even edited those that I needed specifically for this post. And here we are, Thursday now. I figured I better get this one in the books before it's the weekend again and I'm back for more.

Had to grab my Garden Passport and make my initial circuit to get my requisite booth and menu photos. By the time I finished that, I was ready to do some eating. So I started right where I was.

JARDIN DE FIESTAS

Taco al Pastor (corn tortilla filled with achiote marinated pork, garnished with grilled diced pineapple, onions, cilantro, and salsa verde).

They had this one last year, as well, but the pineapple was cut into much smaller pieces this time, making it more juicy, and there was a lot more of the sauce on the pork. The flavors were just as bright as last year, but with the extra juice and sauce, it was a little messy to eat. There is a little zip, the pineapple and cilantro are still the stars of the show, but I could have done with the handful of "taco juice."

I wasn't sure, exactly, what I wanted next, despite having a loose plan for the day, so I just kept wandering ahead, until I found something that jumped out at me.

PRIMAVERA KITCHEN

Fior di Latte, Prosciutto e Pane di Casa (pinwheel of mozzarella and prosciutto, drizzled with olive oil, with a slice of ciabatta bread).

As I shared over on Instagram (where I share them "live"), "And now I can die happy because OMG." Truly. They had me at 'prosciutto', but as a pleasant surprise, mozzarella was almost creamy. The two, together, were absolutely perfect. I had bites of each, separately. I had them together. I had some on a bite of the bread. I used the crusty pieces to soak up the leftover olive oil. Bliss. I don't know what else to say about it, if I haven't already driven home the point.

I figured it was going to be difficult to beat this one anywhere else in the Fest, much less the very next thing I tried. The line was short, so next up...

THE SMOKEHOUSE

Beef Brisket Burnt Ends Hash with White Cheddar Fondue and Pickled Jalapenos.

I feel like this one was slightly misrepresented, but to its benefit. "Burnt ends" makes me think of tough, chewy, charred pieces of meat. That wasn't the case at all! If you can picture a brisket in a slow cooker, these would be the outer most portion of the roast, the part that would typically be seared before being put in to cook slowly. They were certainly welldone, but not overly so. There was so much flavor. Round it out with the potatoes, peppers and onions in the hash, and it was hearty and tasty. The fondue was thinner, rather than stretchy melty cheese. Similar to a Hollandaise sauce with its creaminess but with more of a cheese presence. It really did a lot to pull the whole dish together. (I skipped the jalapenos. I don't mind a little heat, but that's out of my wheelhouse.) All in all, not a bad follow up to the dish that came before it.

I was about ready for some dessert at this point. I knew right where I wanted to go.

FLEUR DE LYS

Macaron Guimauve a la Fraise (strawberry marshmallow macaron).

After how delicious last year's orange blossom and white chocolate macaron turned out to be, I was really looking forward to this. Last year, they just plopped it on a little plate. I appreciated the "upgraded' presentation this time.

Unfortunately, that's where my appreciation ended. The strawberry flavoring to the cookie tasted a bit artificial and the marshmallow filling made it way too sweet -- and I have a definite sweet tooth, so...

If you can see right there in the middle, there was a strawberry preserves center. *That* part I really liked. It tasted like real berries and their slightly tart freshness really balanced out the marshmallow. But there wasn't nearly enough of it.

All told, it was a successful start. By my calculation, I have another four rounds worth of tasting to do, and plenty of time to get to my Grand Finale Best of the Fest Tour. There are fewer booths (they are called Outdoor Kitchens for this Fest, Marketplaces for Food and Wine) and I have ten more weeks to get to the rest. With a double tour set for nest weekend -- Daniel will be in town for some Festing with a Friend! -- I should be able to get it all complete before the weather really starts to heat up in May!

Snapshot from Along the Broken Road: 2015 - Week 9

Since November 2008, I've been documenting the bits of everyday life in a monthly format, through various incarnations. I've loved these "little life snapshots." But for approximately the past six months, I've been craving a change. More than a little tweak, this time, but a different perspective. After taking note of the bloggers I enjoy who do something similar on a weekly basis, I've finally blended my favorite aspects of their weekly posts with some of the framework of my monthly snapshots...and thus was born Snapshot from Along the Broken Road, v. 2.0

Checking in for the week of March 1 through March 7.

WHAT I READ |
Firefly Summer (Maeve Binchy) - The best way to describe how I felt about this book is the overwhelming desire to proclaim "I'M DONE I'M DONE I'M DONE!!" Finally. It wasn't a bad story, it just dragged on for the first half to the point that I feared it would never *have* a point. I think the ending actually brought the same relief for me as it did for most of the characters. I will admit the ending was not at all what I was expecting, and yet it still felt satisfying, if oddly so.
Merry Market Murder (Paige Shelton) - I have about 60 pages left to go in this one. I love me a good little cozy mystery.

WHAT WE ATE|
We had a "clean-up week" -- attempted to use up some odds and ends to prevent waste, as well as clear out some freezer stock. We had quesadillas (to use up some tortillas and sour cream). We pulled a flank steak out of the freezer. I had an almost empty package of orzo in the pantry, so T whipped up some chicken tenders and a salad, while I pit together some garlic Parmesan orzo. And we thawed out some sausage, spinach, and cheese stuffed shells that we'd frozen from a larger batch.

WHAT I ACCOMPLISHED|
I almost cannot believe it's done (and it came at the price of getting very far behind on reading any blogs this week) but I *finally* got iTunes installed and all my music uploaded to the new computer I got...last June. I also successfully updated my iPad and my phone to iOS8. And I got a whole three magazines into the recycling, but three is better than none, right? All that, in addition to my inaugural spin around Flower and Garden Fest 2015, and a side trip over to Hollywood Studios to cross two items off my Fun To Do List: see the park hatless for the first time and check out the Cinderella carriage on display, promoting the upcoming movie release.

CANDLE SCENTS|
Merry Cookie (BBW) - Another one bites the dust. Farewell, delicious vanilla-scented cookie scent!
Christmas Cupcake (YC) - They claim there is an element of cocoa to this scent, but all I smell are vanilla and buttercream. Which, as we know, I happen to love.
Winter Garden (YC) - This one wasn't my favorite. I expected some evergreen and fresh snow. It just smelled "chemically" to me. The name of this candle makes me laugh, though, because every time I see it, I think of the town in Florida.
Twisted Peppermint (BBW) - This is the one that replaced Merry Cookie in the bedroom. This is one of my favorite Bath and Body Works scents. I stock up on the lotion to use year round. It's festive in the winter and honestly makes me feel cooler during the endless Florida summer. Considering we've been running about ten degrees above normal with June levels of humidity, it's been exactly the cool, fresh scent I needed.
French Vanilla (YC) - Pretty basic, but a classic.

WHAT THIS WEEK LOOKED LIKE|
I fell in love with this necklace at Target, but alas, gold tones look all wrong on me.

This is what we found when I peeled back the plastic seal. Ummmm...

Trees be blooming!

The flowers on this tree look like bottle brushes.

New month! I'm kind of intrigued by this one. Has anyone ever been to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden?

Can't. Get. Enough. Grapefruit and honey.

Too warm for the second day of March. Everyone up north wants to smother me, right now, but this is too soon for 80s.

Flower and Garden Fest plan. Lists are my favorite.

My favorites.

This is how I coped with Wednesday.

On my way to evening midweek Lenten service.

This is the secret to making Girl Scout Cookies last longer.

Oh, yes, I did. The Disney Side App officially kills me dead. (Sorry, Android users. Only released for Apple devices.)

I lack spatial skills. Nothing like having to call your pickup-truck-driving husband to come rescue his own birthday gift.

Wee oranges!

I miss living close enough to come up to Disney's Boardwalk to walk in the evenings.

Park Without Hat.

I never noticed that they included Coit Tower in the San Francisco part of Streets of America in Hollywood Studios. I did not enjoy Coit Tower. I may have made an unpleasant face when I noticed it.

Cinderella's carriage on display at Hollywood Studios (promoting the upcoming movie release). This was the other reason, unrelated to The Hat, that brought me over to this park.

DP. That's ME.

One Man's Dream is such a hidden gem of an attraction.

Strawberry Cupcake from the Boardwalk Bakery. It insisted on coming home with me. It was right to insist.

This Week on My TV: March 7, 2015

Disclaimer: Consider the fact that there could be spoilers ahead. You read at your own risk!

**(Grey's Anatomy, S11E13 Staring at the End) I suspect that a lot of people want to ask me the same question Dr Herman asked Arizona: Are you ever not chirpy? (My answer: Not if I can help it.) -- Oh, the awkward newness of the "I like you more than I expected to" phase with Amelia and Owen. -- "Life will out." I get what it means, but it's such an inelegant phrase, rolling off the tongue. -- LOL: Amelia saying Derek has transcontinental smugness. -- Arizona and Dr Herman laying (lying?) (I *never* get the right) in the grass was so reminiscent of early Mer and Cristina. -- I wasn't sure I was going to, but I really enjoyed the back-and-forth between Amelia's lectures and the rest of the story.

**(The Good Wife, S6E13 Dark Money) Colin Sweeney. Possibly one of my favorite recurring characters on this show. He's so unabashedly creepy. -- Irony: The biggest drug dealer in Chicago's kid is worried about Kalinda breaking the law by talking on her phone while driving him home -- I would not hold up under the rigors of campaigning. -- Ed Asner has played some very icky bit roles in the past few years. This was definitely one of them, though with a dose of humor. -- Alicia: Do you always demand this kind of privacy? Redmayne: Everywhere I go. I hate people. -- Owing Bishop a favor *has* to be making Kalinda inwardly question if it was worth keeping Cary out of prison.

**(Mike and Molly, S5E12 The World According To Peggy) Eh. There were some humorous moments with Peggy pretending she chose to retire rather than was asked to leave, but very little of it was noteworthy or memorable.

**(Better Call Saul, S1E5 Alpine Shepherd Boy) I'm unable to decide which rejected client was the bigger whackadoodle: the secession guy or the toilet patent guy? (OMG, that toilet.) -- I can't figure out if Chuck's condition is real or something that requires psychological care. -- LOL: Jimmy studying Matlock and then distributing the Jello cups with his ad in the bottom, while he works the room at the senior facility. -- I am dying to know what the story is with this lot attendant guy!

**(The Middle, S6E16 Flirting with Disaster) Oh, Frankie. Who offers dip with bbq chips? Ew! -- Tag [on his car accident]: Nothing big. Everybody's still alive. -- I cannot remember the last time I laughed as hard was when Frankie was on her cellphone with her sister, speaking inappropriately about Axl's friend as the guys pulled up in her car and she thought the bluetooth played the conversation to them. -- Awww...Brick and Sue bonding on the way back from Brick's convention.

**(Modern Family, S6E17 Closet? You'll Love It!) I have to admit, I'm totally into this Haley and Andy thing. They're playing it up just enough and in just the right way. -- LOL: the annoying drone recording Phil's pants falling down.

**(The Big Bang Theory, S8E17 The Colonization Application) Leonard and Penny and the body paints...and I would be so worried about making a mess that would just never work for me. -- LOL: Raj snooping in Emily's room and breaking her drawer. I think she got the best possible revenge on him too, by leaving him wondering about her closet's potential contents. -- Oh, Sheldon and this Mars application. It is just three steps forward, two steps back for you, navigating an adult romantic relationship. -- Amy: If we had a family on Mars, our kids would be Martians.

**(Reign, S2E14 The End of Mourning) Well, if there wasn't bad blood between Conde and the royals before, there sure is now, after they accused him of being behind the poisoning of Henry via the Bible. -- Initially, my reaction was "Mary's uncle poisoned Henry??" I wasn't even shocked, because it is right up his alley, but I never suspected it at all. But with all the double backstabbing and deceit, of course it was really Narcisse working with Antoine to earn a bag of gold *and* get de Guise out of his way with Catherine. -- I'm glad we haven't totally lost touch with Greer. Especially since it appears she is now pimping out ladies of the night at the low brow inn where she is taking refuge. LOL! -- Mary's sparkling gown. Swoon. -- Oh, break my heart, why don't you, Conde, with that profession of love to Mary. -- Narcisse is plotting his way back. So many characters in this show amuse me, him possibly most of all. -- Hmmm... if Antoine wants to make Bash suffer, does that mean he will possibly attack him by hurting Kenna? -- What an ending. Francis and Mary basically declaring their marriage is a shell only for the sake of appearances? Francis "rekindling" things with Lola? Mary speaking in veiled statements about her feelings for Conde? Oof.

**(The Blacklist, S2E14 T. Earl King VI) The family game those Kings played was some seriously messed up crap. Yikes. -- Oh, Harold. You knew there had to be a price for getting you into that medical trial. There's always a price. And an inappropriate favor is most often the going currency when the piper collects payment. -- When Red realized he'd been tricked by Madeline Pratt, I believe the expression that crossed his face was multiple shades of displeasure. I love when Spader speaks, but he is so talented, he can say volumes without ever making a sound. -- Red [to the Kings' tailor fitting him for a tux]: Really, I'm all for being thorough, but now you're just taking the nickel tour. -- Weird and awkward: Tom and Lizzie's phone conversation. -- I thought it was weird they referred to Berlin as being "out of commission," because last I knew, he was *dead*. -- Weird and awkward, part two: Lizzie waking up in nothing but a lacy slip and Daddy King wheeling in and...snuggling her hand? ::shudder:: -- Nice touch, bringing General Yaabari back (briefly). -- Red [bidding on himself at the Kings' auction]: Nine. Nine million. My money must be good here. -- So, now we know that Harold's diagnosis is a fatal brain tumor. -- Red being all badass in a tux = swoon. -- Red [after the Russian roulette gun turned out to be loaded this time after he shot it at Daddy King]: Oh my God. What are the odds? ... I died laughing. -- Lizzie [to Red]: I risked my life for you because I care about you. Deal with that. ... Big admission! HUGE! -- What a strange ending, with Tom/Christof. I have to believe his story intersects with Red and/or Lizzie again, otherwise why bring him back? But...how?

**(Mom, S2E16 Dirty Money and a Woman Named Mike) So, Christy has managed to be sober in regard to drugs and alcohol, but now has a gambling problem? I'm not sure that's how sobriety is supposed to work... -- For people struggling with cash flow, Bonnie and Christy sure eat frequently at that diner.

**(Blue Bloods, S5E17 Occupational Hazards) Nicky: It's complicated. Frank: Make it simple then. ... This? Is the key to life. -- Kid [collecting charity money at the restaurant, about Frank]: Who does he think he is? Nicky: Well...he's the police commissioner. -- This episode had more creep factor than most. I kinda liked it (from behind my blanket), between someone being in Erin's apartment and attacking Morgan at the office. I noticed Erin keeps a gun in her desk drawer now, though. Can't always rely on Frank coming to her rescue. -- I'm going to guess Jamie isn't going to struggle with his shooting incident like Jenko did with hers. -- I'm pretty sure if you make Frank Reagan come and arrest you himself...just...bad news.

Oh Hey Friday!: March 6, 2015

It's Oh Hey Friday! time, hosted by September FARM. The idea is that you talk about five things -- any five things, themed or random -- and away we go!

The "This Week Was" Edition!

ONE|
A little bit stressful. (The...shall we say...culmination of Ladies Days should not run late is all I'm saying.)

A photo posted by Dawn Peters (@daybreak1012) on

TWO|
A little bit silly.
A photo posted by Dawn Peters (@daybreak1012) on

THREE|
Freaking awesome, because the orange groves all around are in full bloom and there are actual Spring Training baseball games being played (meaningless, but still! games!) and I'm going to Flower and Garden Fest at Epcot this weekend and just yes. Yes to all of that.

And this. Grapefruit drizzled with honey. I'm all over that.

FOUR|
Hot. I know this makes everyone not in Florida hate all the people who live in Florida, but I had to run the a/c almost every day this week and that makes me sad. No, I do not want to live in a 25-foot snowbank. I left all that behind thirteen years ago, without a moment of regret (except for between the dates of December 20 and January 2). But neither do I want to pay for an additional two months of air conditioning costs. That's all I'm saying. Oh, and also: humidity hair. /pity party

FIVE|
Challenging in ways that made me laugh at myself. A lot. (Good thing this wasn't at the beginning of the week. Seriously.)

Snapshot from Along the Broken Road: 2015 - Week 8

Since November 2008, I've been documenting the bits of everyday life in a monthly format, through various incarnations. I've loved these "little life snapshots." But for approximately the past six months, I've been craving a change. More than a little tweak, this time, but a different perspective. After taking note of the bloggers I enjoy who do something similar on a weekly basis, I've finally blended my favorite aspects of their weekly posts with some of the framework of my monthly snapshots...and thus was born Snapshot from Along the Broken Road, v. 2.0

Checking in for the week of February 22 through February 28.

WHAT I READ |
Firefly Summer (Maeve Binchy) - This. Book. Will. Never. End.

WHAT WE ATE|
We made meatballs subs from the stash of meatballs in our giant freezer. It had been ages since we last had brown sugar glazed pork, which we rounded out with some mashed potatoes and asparagus. On Friday, T roasted a whole chicken, and I warmed up some sweet peas and wild rice. And then there was the giant dish of baked spaghetti, which will mean leftovers for several days and I think we might try freezing a serving to see if it's a freezer-friendly reheat.

WHAT I ACCOMPLISHED|
Flat of strawberries: mission accomplished. And...that's pretty much it, other than, you know, day to day living.

CANDLE SCENTS|
Merry Cookie (BBW) - Seriously. Like someone is baking sugar cookies in my bedroom.
Christmas Wreath (YC) - I feel so silly with the Christmas scents, but it's still winter!
Creme Brulee (YC) - Vanilla scents make me happy.
Magical Frosted Forest (YC) - And, here we have more evergreen. I had an unofficial theme for the week, I guess!

WHAT THIS WEEK LOOKED LIKE|
Cold snap was short lived in Florida. We rocketed 53 degrees from our record-breaking low on Friday to well above seasonal on Sunday. Not a fan of contemplating a/c in February.

Sweet.

Time to walk.

Love birds!

You wish this were scratch-and-sniff. Trust me.

The sauce is made in the same pan as the pork tenderloin medallions, so it's all the yummy browned bits and liquid brown sugar and some butter and some red wine. And it makes me seriously contemplate licking my plate clean. Literally.

So much hair now. (Also, my natural color is a lot darker than it used to be, judging by my roots.)

When did I move to Seattle? I mean, c'mon. I don't think I could like in the contiguous United States and be much further away from it.

Contrasts: light and dark. blue sky and clouds. sunshine and rain.

I love my friends-via-internet. Like Janet. Who found this lovely and sent it to me. Just because it made her think of me. I know exactly where it's going to go. Just need to find a frame.

Seriously. Seattle.

I had a weird laryngitis thing. In a fit of dumb, I took a single DayQuil liquigel. Which contains decongestant. Except I had no congestion (I was just trying to stop the reflexive coughing). It stopped the cough, but got bored and liquified my brain. That is the only way I can account for the box and a half of tissues I went through in ten hours, despite have zero sinus congestion. I ended up drinking a "tea" of hot water, lemon, and honey. Then I took a half dose of NyQuil and when I woke up I was cured. The end.

I love peas.

You're jealous of my tin foil hat. You know it.

Happy. (I've been a Annual Pass Holder since 2002. They didn't make these back then though.)
