PSA: July 11, 2006

let this be a lesson to you. when your home is invaded by a hundred thousand tiny black ants & they cover half the wardrobe that is hanging in your closet, DO NOT ask "can this week *get* any worse??" because the answer is YES, yes it can.

you can drive innocently down the road & some sharp phantom object will leave a 4" slice in your tire causing it to blow out.

btw it WILL be raining while all of this happens. and do NOT get yours hopes up when not one but THREE of FL's finest drive past you, pulled over on the side of the roads with your hazards flashing & do not even so much as glance in your direction.

268-freaking-dollars later, i have a new tire & an exterminated home. don't you all wish you were me now??

Monday Music Mambo - Week 101

Hi everyone! Have a good weekend? Today is Keep The Change Day, but I don't know how to make that into a musical meme. So we'll make a playlist instead.

A song you love a lot right now:
"Ever the Same", Rob Thomas
A song that came out in your senior year of high school: "Crazy", Aerosmith
A song about a woman: "She's Always a Woman to Me", Billy Joel
A song with curse words: "It's Been a While", Staind
A song with a great guitar solo: "November Rain", Guns N' Roses
A song by a Canadian: "Thought I'd Died and Gone to Heaven", Bryan Adams
A song you hate: "You're Beautiful", James Blunt
A song other people hate but you love: i'm sure there are a bunch but nobody has ever come right out & told me that they hated a song i love.
A song covered by at least two other bands or artists: "Please Come to Boston", originally done by Dave Loggins, covered by both Kenny Chesney & Reba McEntire
A song without vocals: "Angel Eyes", Jim Brickman

Monday Music Mambo - Week 102

Water: "Old Blue Chair", Kenny Chesney
Earth: "Where the Green Grass Grows", Tim McGraw
Sky: "Somewhere Out There", Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram

Good Monday to everyone! Now, for this week's questions.... and thanks for playing!

1. What is your favorite framed object in your house?
my framed Andie photos that i have hanging in my office
2. If you had a choice of being a carnivore or a herbivore, which one would you be, and why? no way could i pick! i like a well balanced meal.
3. Who do you think should have won the FIFA World Cup? Or, don't you care? the only football i care about is the NFL. i am just glad the thing is OVER so we can stop talking about it all the time. =P
4. What's your feelings on stormy weather? i love it...as long as it isn't a hurricane
5. Do you believe in "time out" chairs? yes i do. i don't have children but i did daycare for years & i was a firm believer in time out when necessary. i also exercise time out for my pup when he misbehaves--into his crate he goes. the key is to be consistent without overusing.
6. Have you ever bought or sold anything on Ebay? never. i never even really look at Ebay.

Sunday Seven - Episode 38

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
List your top seven blogging pet peeves.

1. comment spam!
2. when Blogger misbehaves
3. blogs that suddenly disappear with no warning what-so-ever
4. people who don't put their blog music in an easy to find place so you can turn it off if you need to...or who disable the ability to turn it off
5. tools & add-ons that stop working!
6. bloggers who do not check out their own blogs to see the "read-abililty" or to see if their blog is functioning properly
7. blogs with RSS feeds disabled--i have a hard time remembering to keep up with blogs i can't subscribe to through Bloglines

Saturday Six - Episode 117

1. What is the last food you prepared that you burned badly?
some english muffin pizzas that i didn't think would burn that fast under the broiler while i checked the score in the game. oops...
2. Did you eat it anyway? nope. they hit the trash & i started over. my dog wouldn't even taste one & he is a goat.
3. What is your favorite carnival ride and why? not a big fan of carnival rides. they kind of scare me. but i do like those giant wavy slides!
4. Take the quiz: How is your Inner Child?

Your Inner Child Is Sad

You're a very sensitive soul.

You haven't grown that thick skin that most adults have.

Easily hurt, you tend to retreat to your comfort zone.

You don't let many people in - unless you've trusted them for a long time.

5. What is your ideal summer day? one in which we experience a "cool front" ;-)
6. What was the setting of the last dream you remembered? i was in Manny Ramirez's house

What cartoons were your favorite?

Do you remember any of the theme songs? yep!
Were you up before dawn watching the test pattern waiting for cartoons to come on? nope. i knew what time they came on & i would read a book or play with my paper dolls until they started.

ants in my pants

and i do mean *literally*. OMG.

nothing like walking into your closet after you shower to find hundreds of tiny little black ants happily marching all over the clean clothes hanging there. is NOTHING off limits?? and just what do they think they are finding there?? took me forever to find an ant-free top & pair of pants that matched each other...and i am still itchy just thinking about them.

everything on that side of my closet is being boiled in the hottest water the washing machine can muster & now instead of smelling like fresh clean laundry (mmmm...Bounce dryer sheets...), my closet reeks of Raid.

make no mistake. the ants have had their last hurrah in my house. i am calling in the big guns now.

effing ants.
please shoot me.

shift. this.

"I've never been so happy to get out of here with a win in my life," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. (Redsox.com) me too, Tito...me too. and the rest of RSN & everybody who suits up in a Red Sox uniform 162 times a year i would suspect.

they did it though. in the eleventh hour of this series, my boys came through by getting themselves on the board first & not relinquishing their lead, no way, no how. held on by claws...teeth...sheer will to come out on top...praying that Papelbon can make his entrance (errr...walk from the park bench "bullpen") on 3 days off & help them win with their measly one run lead...until...

Boston Dirt Dogs: (Frank Galasso, cartoonist)

...Big Papi knocks off his Big Crappy routine & seals the deal in the 9th, bases loaded, no one out. no one but the ball which is probably still sailing. oh. right. it can't still be sailing in a (stupid) dome. but it's embedded firmly in the wall at least. or dancing a merry jig with the long balls assisted from the park by Manny, Mirabelli & its older sibling, the Big Papi 2-run homer in the 5th. i know there will be some who are disenchanted by & critical of Ortiz watching his first home run of the game make its grand exit, calling him arrogant, but really? even though it bugs me too to see showboating of that nature, generally speaking, i can't help but think Papi had the right to do that, considering it was Joe Maddon's execution of the shift that has had some crippling effects on David's hitting this season. the little kid that still exists inside me almost wished he would look the Rays' manager in the eye & give him a big wet PPPPPFFFFTTTT!! before rounding the bags. almost. ;-)

"Pretty much what they're trying to do is get in my head," Ortiz said. "I've got to stay with the same approach. I just figured that hitting the ball up there, no way they can catch it. They've really been playing some extreme defense, so I've got to stay where the ball is and try to hit it as hard as I can." (FOXSports.com)

or as Jerry Remy put it: "The only way to make a successful shift against this guy is to put a position player in the third row of the bleachers." all i know is...man is it pretty to watch him go yard.

found this little tidbit & had to share before moving along to a few other non-Ortiz-centered thoughts:
After yet another monster night, David Ortiz, fresh out of the shower, looked to the chair next to him and saw a stack of $20 bills.

"Is that my money?" Ortiz, a little confused, asked multiple times.

Coco Crisp finally came over and solved the mystery, grabbing the stack of bills and putting them in his wallet. Ortiz then busted out laughing and told reporters, "You know how I knew that wasn't my money?"

He then opened a container filled with $100 bills and bellowed out, "This is how I roll!"
(Redsox.com) LOL! well we don't pay him the big bucks for nothing. ;-)

wait! just one more! last one, i promise! i wonder if Duh-wayne & the Migraine think Carl Crawford qualifies for this too? Crawford, who can only dream of being Mr. Clutch the way that Ortiz is.

(Image: Brian G)

As usual with Wakefield, he never let on to outsiders how much he was hurting entering this start. (Redsox.com) between Wakey & Lowell, gritting their teeth & playing through the pain, i wonder where we'd be if these guys were playing healthy....all i know is that for someone pitching injured, i'll take 5 innings of what he had last night. the fluttery dancing of that knuckleball is something to behold when it's working its magic. i hope the 6-day rest is enough for Timmy to get back to feeling good though. we do NOT need to find him on the DL. our pitching woes are miserable enough with the likes of Johnson seemingly entrenched in the 5-spot of the rotation. the one *good* thing i can say about the relief though is that minus the EZs (need i even point that out??), we have a couple of guys in there that have been doing some work. and i don't mean the blatantly obvious "set-'em-up & shut-'em-down" team. Craig Hansen is starting to come around, enough so that i do not cringe when i see him warming in the pen (or the dirt at the side of the field as the case may be in *some* domes). and how about Lil' Manny?? he's stepped up nicely on several calls for help now and i actually feel a sense of...can it be?...confidence when they bring him in. at first, i thought it was just the relief of not seeing Julian (or Rudy. or Javier.), but now i am noticing that his appearances are looking better & better. nowhere near the feelings of resolve yet as when Timlin and/or Papelbon come in, but a far cry better than how i was feeling a few weeks ago when i saw Tito or The Nip reach for the bullpen phone, that knot of dread as my stomach sunk, knowing it was way too early to call in the only two guys i was willing to pin my hopes on at that point. but now there is consistency from the baby faces of Hansen & Delcarmen and my heart rate is returning a little closer to the range of "normal".

i think i am going to keep this next part in the back of my head for the sake of my sanity:
Bob Ryan gives us a pep talk:

I suppose you want to know what's going on. Baseball's going on. The Big 162. The ebb and the flow. ... You guys are supposed to be seasoned fans. That's what I keep hearing. ... I promise you they'll all be looking back at these three nights at some future date and laugh. ... [R]ight now the oppressor is baseball. But don't worry. There are 80 games left. ... They'll be just fine.

We know all this, of course, but it's maddening just the same. However, I also recall writing back on August 7, 2004 that "this summer hasn't been a whole lot of fun ... even the victories have left me pissed off" and asking is this "The Most Frustrating Red Sox Season Ever"?
(The Joy of Sox)
i guess i just got so used to seeing the Red Sox as the victors that this little post-euphoric slip in Tampa came as a bit of a shock to my system. they'll be ok. they will hit again. they showed me last night. BELIEVE.

and with that, done in the dome. onward to Chicago to take on the 2005 World Champs & their lunatic manager. should scare me but...i'm just happy we're getting the hell out of The Trop. Little Jon Lester gets the start tonight...and i'm nervous but not as nervous as i thought i would be. here's hoping we make this next series a winning one somehow & then a solid 3 day rest for the team with the 3rd best record in MLB.

i could live the rest of my life without Tampa pro sports teams

things that irritate me about "The Trop":

1. Dwayne Staats and Joe Magrane. the stupid 70s hair. the innane commentary. the freaking delusion that the Rays are a great ball team.

2. they insist on calling David Ortiz "Dave". listen. if you aren't going to refer to him by his last name, then it's David or Big Papi. you aren't his buddy. you don't get to call him Dave. the most familiar you are allowed to get with him is Papi. that's it. now knock it off.

3. it's a dome. i HATE domes. and i firmly believe that if you want to build a dome ball field then you aren't allowed to do so unless you can afford to make the roof retractable. and you may only close it on account of rain. period. baseball is an outdoor sport. (so is football but that's got nothing to do with the price of tea in China. not till September anyway.)

4. "house rules". namely ones that benefit only the home team. for example: ball hit by A-Gon hits speaker but lands in fair territory & is dropped by pitcher = foul ball. ball hitting the "C ring" by Rays player and bouncing back onto the field = home run. ball hit by Youk off the "B ring" and bouncing back onto the field & caught = a fly out. just who makes up these rules??

5. just because Carl Crawford steals home does not mean we are looking at an all star player. get OVER it. we are NOT looking at the most exciting player in Major League baseball. and if you are awed by him, maybe you ought to at least LOOK at the other teams you play against. he's a *good* player but there are a lot of other players out there who are a lot better. 'nuff said.

6. Manny Ramirez sitting out of the All Star Game does not have anything to do with "Manny being Manny" you asshats. Manny sitting out of the game is because Manny has been having knee & back trouble for a couple of months now & he is electing to make a decision based on his health & needing to be a healthy part of his team's line up for the second half of the season. he is showing responsibility to his team by bowing out & giving his spot to the next guy in line. i will point out to you that this person is NOT Carl Crawford.

7. a park bench & a strip of dirt along the sidelines for warming up while constantly needing to check over your shoulder for foul balls lining your direction is *not* a bullpen. are you seriously THAT cheap??

thank Nichole for this one. in fact, i urge you. click on that link & go right over there & thank her yourself. i just know once you get there that you'll love her as much as i do. =)

1. Have you ever been searched by the cops?
nope. just the security personnel at WDW.

2. Do you close your eyes on a roller coaster?
nope. i do not RIDE roller coasters. *barf*

3. When's the last time you've been sledding?
oh jeeeez...uhhhh...the winter after senior year of high school i think? or maybe it was during that year. i went with a bunch of people up to BCHS (where i went to high school) & we slid down the giant hills leading to the football field. and then we went for hot chocolate. and for the record, that was more than a dozen years ago. =)

4. Would you rather sleep with someone else, or alone?
i sleep much better alone these days.

5. Do you believe in ghosts?
yes i do. and angels. and all sorts of things we can't readily explain with mere logic. i think there is far more of this world than we want to admit exists because we can't wrap our minds around it...but that doesn't mean it isn't real.

6. Do you consider yourself creative?
i think we all have the potential to be creative but like any other skill, it requires exercise & use or it stagnates.

7. Do you think O.J. killed his wife?
i think...that i wasn't there & i would hate to say someone's guilty without the proof before my very own eyes. but if it looks like a duck...and walks like a duck...odds are...

8. Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie?
Jen. Jen. Jen. i have a really personal issue with "the other woman"...and how Brangelina handled itself was all too familiar ground for me--i hold them both equally responsible. i've said it before and i'll say it now: yes i know they aren't together any more. i'm not over it. Jenn'll probably be over it before i am.

9. Can you honestly say you know ANYTHING about politics?
enough to sound semi-intelligent and like i don't live under a rock. then again, what more is there to politics these days than mud-slinging, lying through one's teeth & drama? it's like high school all over again...only with higher stakes.

10. Do you know how to play poker?
no clue. and have no interest. plus i am a terrible liar. i laugh. no poker face for me!

11. Have you ever been awake for 48 hours straight?
i don't believe so. i am sure that i must have dozed off at least a little bit even if i was up for most of it.

12. What's your favorite commercial?
ooooohhhhhh...a definite tie. there's the Peyton Manning Mastercard commercial where he is in the diner (D CAF! *bang bang*D CAF! *bang bang*). and the Gatorade commercial that's on now ("shut your big head up!"). and i love the Foxwoods commercials when the Red Sox games on Extra Innings are shown on NESN--especially the one with "the lucky chip" or the one themed like The Wizard of Oz ("The wonderrrr...of it all! Fox. Woods.).

13. Who was your first love?
ahhh...love. next question?

14. If you're driving in the middle of the night, and no one is around you, do you run a red light?
no because i know that as soon as i do, there will be one of FL's finest hidden behind a bush somewhere just waiting to pull me over.

15. Do you have a secret that no one knows but you?
no i do not.

16. Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees?
say WHAT?? look around you (here in the blog i mean). what do YOU think??

17. Have you ever been Ice Skating?
requires far too much coordination on a slippery surface for that to possibly be a good idea. and not a soft enough landing. =P

18. How often do you remember your dreams?
as long as i wake up on my own & not by being rudely ripped from a sleeping state, i can remember every vivid detail. and believe me when i tell you that some are worth remembering just for sharing purposes.

19. What's the one thing on your mind?
the one thing? ONE thing. ONE. *snort* yeah right. there isn't enough room on this blog. or the internet.

20. Do you always wear your seat belt?
always. it goes on as soon as i get into the car. when i was a kid, my dad had me convinced that the car would not, COULD not, move unless seatbelts were fastened. pretty clever huh?

21. What talent do you wish you had?
clever *timely* comebacks. ;-)

22. Do you like Sushi?
i've tried little bits of it. some of the textures kind of disturb me.

23. What do you wear to bed?
tank tops and pj pants... or track pants. *giggle*

24. Do you truly hate anyone?
i don't lean in the direction of hate. the closest i get to that is extreme apathy. indifference. or if i am going to feel something, hurt. but i don't waste my energy on hate.

25. If you could sleep with one famous person, who would it be?
sleep with? what happened to 'have dinner with'?! i don't sleep with people just because. not even hypothetically.

26. Do you know anyone in jail?
i've known people who have been in jail. none that are there at the moment though.

27. What food do you find disgusting?
there are foods that i do not care for but find actually disgusting?? liver & onions ranks right up there. oysters. cottage cheese. any sort of hot cereal.

28. Have you ever made fun of your friends behind their back?
not as an adult. i've made fun of former friends though. heh. Thing 1.

29. Have you ever been punched in the face?
no & i hope never to be. i would cry.

30. Do you believe in angels and demons?
i refer you to question 5.

i could just watch animals for hours...these particular creatures call Busch Gardens (Tampa) their home & were my personal favorites. the little gorilla baby is 7 months old & he is just like watching a human baby of the same age. his little face was so sweet & his mama was so attentive to him. it was fascinating to watch them interacting. and that little chimp was a riot, doing tumbles & stalking things in the grass, totally putting on a show for the people watching him, hamming it up & laughing at himself! =)

there is nothing better than Italian pasta salad on a hot day. yum. and it's so simple, you can throw it together in less than 20 minutes, start to finish. mine is just halved grape tomatoes, sliced black olives & diced green pepper--and pasta of course, with some Roasted Red Pepper Italian dressing. you could also add cucumber (i didn't have one) or diced onion if you prefer (which i don't!). the only thin that possibly makes this better is when you eat it as left overs & the salad gets to marinate in the dressing over night. *happy sigh*
