some things never change
if i have to listen to the Sunshine Network guys complain one more time that Carl Crawford got snubbed not being voted into the All Star game, i am driving down to The Trop to duct tape their mouths shut! just try me.
they spent the whole game last night whining about how Crawford was at least as good as the three staters who got voted in for the American League.
As. If.
they are trying to tell me that Carl Crawford is more of an All Star than Manny Ramirez? Vernon Wells? Ichiro Suzuki? you've got to be kidding me, right?
Carl Crawford leads only one category: stolen bases, and is tied for AL leader in triples. of the four, he is 2nd in batting average, hits & runs scored, but only by a margin; is third in doubles, home runs & RBIs; and dead last in OBP. not to mention his team is 2nd to worst in the AL. oh & the fact that NO ONE outside of the Tampa area has any idea who he is! c'mon! even 2/3 of the crowd attending a Devil Rays game is there to see the opposing team!
i've said it before & i have no doubt i'll be saying it again: the Tampa sports announcers live in their own fantasy land where every Tampa team is a championship team & when they lose, it is a product of favoritism toward the opponent, not poor playing by the Devil Rays (Lightning, Bucs).
and of course anyone would give up the likes of Manny Ramirez, Vernon Wells or Ichiro Suzuki to get CRAWFORD on their team. Carl who?? =P

1. I have broken one bone in my lifetime. (and never wore a cast--it was in my foot right where my toes meet my body & like a broken toe, all you can do is hobble till it heals.)
2. I have had to get zero stitches.

The worst I've ever injured myself was when one of my daycare babies--30lbs at 1 year of age mind you--dislocated my shoulder by falling into me in an awkward position as i was standing him up to pull up his pants after a diaper change; his size made him a little unbalanced & i blocked him from falling & ended yp with a shoulder that still grinds & aches to this day.
4. I've had to go to the Emergency room 3 or 4 times.
5. On a scale of 1 (being the highest) to 10 (being the lowest), my pain tolerance is a 7 or 8 probably, i hate pain.

the one in which my blood runs cold
i should be rejoicing. a win! and HUGE hitting for Wakefield last night. Manny & Papi at 2 homers a piece. the (stupid) scoreboard robbing Lowell of two long balls & Papi of his third, but awarding them stand up doubles & RBIs. the boys opened it up & restored their pride after the whooping they received the night before, coming to the plate with magical bats of steel instead of Twinkies & overcooked spaghetti noodles. i should be glowing over the fact that the Yankees lost & now share the "4 games out of first" spot with the Blue Jays--and because the Sox have managed to start out July on exactly the right foot. there were records set & milestones reached. and even though i was relegated to listening to WEEI online & watching the stats on Gameday because the Sunshine Network decided that instead of the promised baseball game, they would show two Chinese women boxing & replays of the Special Olympics, i was still dancing with delight over the multiple proclamations of "Way back! Way back! This ball is GOOOONE!"

i read something this morning on The Joy of Sox that could have come straight from my own head: Since I often rip Terry Francona for various transgressions (both real and imagined!)... *ahem* often more real than imagined, unfortunately...
truly though...i can't figure out just what in the hell is up with his over-managing the pitching this year. he can't just leave it alone & make his decisions based upon how his starter is doing instead of what appears to be rigidly following some pre-selected pitching schedule he has created alongside the day's batting order. (for someone who will appreciate it: "No schedule for you!" *whack*) i see him pulling starters that are still on the money for no other apparent reason than pitch count, which, while important to consider & monitor, isn't as black & white as simply reaching 100. i've heard more than one pitcher state that sometimes you can throw 115 more comfortably in one game than 85 in other games--15 pitches over 100 can be a whole extra inning from your starter! and more importantly, prevent the use of the EZs. or even worse is when it appears as though the decision is based on what inning it is. "oops! 7th inning! time for Julian Tavarez to come in & lose the game for us! look--it's right here in the game script, see?"
to be fair, other than a few other minor comments he's made that have made me shake my head in disbelief (like only needing 4 pitchers in the rotation or having Wily Mo back Youk at first base, for example), i do believe that Tito knows what he's doing. i'm just a little baffled by his pitching choices is all.
this following quote though may push me over the edge. especially when you look at who said it...and who is responsible for making this happen, if indeed it does:
Johnson admitted to feeling a bit nervous last night: I had a lot of adrenaline going the first couple innings, my first start with Boston and stuff. I was trying to go out there and impress guys, trying to throw a little too hard, falling off the mound a little bit. ... Over the last two innings, I settled down and threw the ball where I wanted. ... I'm just going to go out there five days from now and pitch against Tampa and work at getting the ball down right off the bat.
now i ask you, JASON JOHNSON WHAT?? he can't seriously be pitching in Tampa. i thought for sure he'd be gone after that showing Friday night. i mean...i mean...(look! i am reduced to sputtering!) Kyle Snyder got a WIN & David Pauley showed incredible poise, giving up hits but not very many runs, even if he was cited at the losing pitcher. and they both got shipped back to AAA. and Jason Johnson is pitching again in Tampa?? well so sayeth the Probable Pitchers report on the Red Sox website.
i have to tell you...if Jason Johnson keeps his spot...and upon Matt Clement's return, which is looking imminent at this point (queue up the horror movie music!), Lester finds himself on the bus back to Pawtucket...well, i don't know what. i am actually completely incapable of forming the rest of this thought--the preceding statement is *that* distressing.
i hope he enjoys feeling like this because i, for one, do not.

i'm not much of a user of profanity. i guess probably ass or bitch would score the highest, not sure which. you're much more likely to hear damn or hell come out of my mouth than anything else.

i think i may have been to one or two but i don't recall for certain which ones. and they might have actually be Busch Gardens parks. i have no clue.

i think guys are *much* easier to get along with. they aren't all two-faced & back-stabbing the way girls are. if a guy has a problem with you, he'll pretty much tell it like it is instead of acting like every thing is fine & then turning around & being vicious the second you walk away. and again there's Jamie's answer which may explain why i like her so much!: Depends. Usually the opposite sex. Unless it's girls who usually get along better with guys. Then for some reason we hang well. :)

i'll take me some Coco in center with an extra helping of "how the HELL did he do that??" defense over JD without a second thought.
and small ball--real execution of the fundamentals, has never been so breathtaking to behold. bunting. base-stealing. tagging up & scoring on sac flies. picking off the runner--and picther appreciation for doing so.
hitting to get on base. face-in-the-dirt, grass-stained-knees defense when it counts. with all the excitement of walk-off homers that we've had our share of celebrating in Red Sox Nation...there was something enchanting about watching my Boys manufacture runs & play red-hot defense.
"Just when you're ready to wonder if David Ortiz is only human after all, just when you're beginning to think that .260-something batting average is proof that The Shift is his Kryptonite..." Big Papi works the ball off the wall to get a double, bellyflops his thunderous self into third base on a Lowell fly ball, and tagging up, chugs home for the tying run on Tek's sacrifice fly. as long as his heart doesn't stop from the exertion & he doesn't take an injury attempting to slide into bases, i could watch Ortiz play ball like this every day, showing them that not even this shift can hold him down forever. oh yeah & his 200th career long ball just to remind you that the shift doesn't work on that either. ;-)
"I'm pretty sure he'd contribute more playing with a torn Achilles' tendon in one leg and a wooden peg for his other leg than Willie Harris and Dustan Mohr would with four healthy wheels between them." yes, i am certain that the return of Gabe Kapler has shown to be invaluable already, as priceless as it is incredible that he can dig it in & charge balls like this over there in spacious Fenway right field. i am not missing the likes of Mohr & Harris in a daily switch out routine. i just cringe when i see the fancy footwork taking place when Gabe dashes around the outfield like he's the new Bionic Man.

here's hoping that tonight's Boston debut for Jason Johnson doesn't leave me continuing to wistfully wish we had given David Pauley just a little bit longer to test the waters in the bigs. i want to believe that the best thing for everyone is that he is getting a little longer in the minors to develop rather than feeling as if the revolving 5-slot in the rotation is just another black hole in our pitching struggles this season.
coming up to the trade deadline, it is good to see that Manny is happy in Boston. finally. this is a whole new side to Manny we're seeing this season...and i can't say he's disappointed me with his attitude.

before i am completely remiss two weeks in a row, i must thank my wonderful friend Michelle for my very own Thursday Thirteen banner. =)
1. the unmistakable sound of a bat on a ball launched into the upper deck. even when it's not my team (though i prefer when it is), there is just something about that sound that is musical...
2. the roar of the crowd at Fenway when welcoming back former team members--whether active in another organization or retired from The Game--as long as they don't arrive on a bus bought by anyone with the name Steinbrenner.
3. precision infielding. the perfectly turned double play. fluid. effortless. lightning speed. it's a beautiful sight if you stop to appreciate it.
4. the rare game where Wakefield's knuckleball is on target, rendering him unhittable. the propensity of the knuckleball to be fickle & unpredictable is both its strength & its weakness. there are often good at-bats and good innings but the good *game* is incredible.
5. pitchers' duels.
6. a cannon-arm release from a catcher picking off a runner's attempt to steal second base. there is such accuracy required. cat-like reflexes involved. hard throw up the middle. a pitcher you need to avoid hitting standing between home plate & the target.
7. closers that shut. it. down. even when you're facing one, you know what you're witnessing is something extraordinary.
8. Red Sox - Yankees games. these match ups are WAY more than just the hype. they are electric!
9. outfielders showing above-and-beyond effort to snatch long balls back from over the wall.
10. 2 outs. bottom of the ninth. go ahead run at the plate. STRIKE THREE! that kind of adrenaline rush is unmatchable with the game on the line. even if you lose, everyone is watching that last pitch as if in a state of suspended animation.
11. the excitement of a late inning rally.
12. seeing players who understand the importance of "wearing their socks right".
13. Red Sox jubilation in conversation. or commiseration if we must.

Peyyy-dro!" after giving up 8 runs in 3 innings--let it be known that i cannot believe these were *true* Red Sox fans capable of this sort of behavior. watching his fine footwork as he scrambled around the corners of right field late in tonight's game is a moment of wonder when you recall that he had, what has been for many, a career-ending injury less than one year ago.

not to be forgotten is last night's opener against the "other boys from New York"...and in my opinion, quite a performance from The Kid. i have good feelings in my gut about Jon Lester. i think he fits right in here.
can't say *anything* else about the Sox. it goes against the rules of The New Superstition. but i encourage you to look up the stats for yourself! ;-)

guys. it is Not. Necessary. to bathe in cologne. this is one of those instances where less is *definitely* the best way to go. you want a girl to pass through the space near you...catch just a hint of something yummy that tickles her sense of smell...which may cause her to hang around a bit, hoping for just another hint, trying to figure out just what smells so good...and the idea is that it might even get her to move a little closer to where you are in an effort to smell that delicious scent again. drowning yourself in it so that her eyes water before you've even entered the building is not going to lure her anywhere near you. even if she doesn't run choking & sputtering in search of fresh air to fill her lungs, she may in fact be unable to penetrate the wall of smell around you.
also. if it smells like something my Gram used to polish furniture? yeah. not the sort of scent that reels a girl in.
just saying.
