Thirteen Things I've learned about the value of a true friend

1. no matter how wrong you are, no matter how foolish or misguided, a true friend will stick by you & support you. it's easy to stand behind a friend's choices when you agree with them; much less so to provide unconditional support, regardless of your personal feelings or opinions.

2. a true friend knows when to offer a hug; when to make you laugh; when to offer potential solutions; when to simply listen; and when to distract you with anything possible to give you the mental break you aren't smart enough to take for yourself.

3. a true friend notices the tiny details that no one else does. and remembers to follow up on even the little things when you haven't mentioned them recently.

4. a true friend fits these lyrics from "A Friend to Me" (Garth Brooks):

And there's times I'd rather kill you
Than listen to your honesty
But you've always been a friend to me

You've always been
Time and again
The one to take my hand
And show to me
It's okay to be
Just the way I am
With no apology

5. the art of reciprocation is something that a true friend understands the importance of practicing.

6. a true friend manages to be interested in what you have to say even if they would otherwise not go out in search of the information you are sharing.

7. a true friend knows that you can go several days without touching base & still be secure in your friendship...but they would rather not too much time elapse in silence.

8. a true friend not only emails with you all day but has several possible email addresses at which to reach you in case the primary one malfunctions...and you have their back up email addresses on file as well.

9. a true friend is someone whom it is never too early in the morning or too late at night to call if you need them...and who will not hesitate to call you at any hour if they need you. no apologies are necessary when the phone rings.

10. a true friend can sing the next line in the song you are singing to yourself.

11. a true friend gives generously without expecting anything in return but your continued friendship...but can accept tokens from you graciously, no matter how big or small they are, and treasure them.

12. a true friend calls you when the pregnancy test comes back positive; when the ultrasound technician accidentally reveals the baby's sex 3 weeks before her due date; to tell you she *still* hasn't given birth (because you are the only person who hasn't called her 15 times to ask if she has); and then 17 minutes after the baby arrives, calls from her hospital bed. and then she sends you photos every time you ask her to which is something along the lines of every 10 days.

13. a true friend never makes you feel bad about yourself; never allows you to feel less than you are worth; and who encourages you to hold on when you're one thin thread away from giving up.

pssst!

all i can say is yay! any more than that & i am afraid i will throw off the delicate balance of the cosmos...or awaken bats that are in power nap mode...

i owe an apology to Alex Cora about whom i made many a snide remark earlier this season. Alex Cora who is now batting a solid .304 & whose batting average is currently higher than both Big Papi *and* Manny Ramirez. =O who. knew.

and how about Little Jon Lester with a shut-me-up TEN STRIKEOUTS last night? i am starting to think there may be something to pitchers named Jon that may just be the key to the up-and-coming Boston pitching squad.

ok that's it. that's all i can say.

next game up Friday.

let it be known...

...that for the first time this season, i went to bed before the end of a Red Sox game. i just could not take it any more. giving up two grand slams to the Twins in as many games was just more than i could handle. and that is all i have to say about that.

i say again (this time on the day he actually starts): Go Lucky 49! may the bats finally be with you now that you have a new spot in the rotation.

big freaking news flash

i have no use for Julian Tavarez. NONE.
talk about a waste of bullpen space. i would rather see David Pauley up here, pitching relief, than Julian Tavarez. who gives up the lead, earned in the top half of the TWELFTH INNING?! why, that would be Julian Tavarez, ladies & gentlemen! and he didn't just lose the game--he hit a batter, gave up a ground rule double, intentionally walked a batter & THEN he gave up the game losing GRAND SLAM. i hope Schill had a word or two to say to the guy who LOST THE GAME that he worked so hard to keep the Sox in, against one of he most impressive pitchers (Santana) i've seen so far this year. i hope that this speculation on Surviving Grady holds true regarding Curt Schilling: He is a baseball warrior. I am waiting for the bullpen to dare blow one of his games. I fully expect him to visit the mound and deliver a vicious beating to the unlucky reliever.

i will drink to this quip by The Joy of Sox: Dear Julian Tavarez: Turn in your uniform, walk out the door, and never come back.

all i can say is THANK GOD Mike Timlin is back & looking like his old self, comfy on the mound & pitching beautifully in his first return after being on the DL.

Francona: if you call another EZ to "relieve" (translation: lose the game), i cannot be held accountable for what happens next. how many times will it take to learn that EZs do not win games?! i have two words for you in situations where you have used up Timlin & Papelbon, yet the game is still going: Manny. Delcarmen. at least he stands a fighting chance. hell, i'd rather see Risky Riske get the nod. or the pitching machine. or JT Snow. =P any of them are better pitching options in a game like this than an EZ.

**side note**
this also makes me happy to read (also from The Joy of Sox):
The clock is ticking on Willie Harris. Gabe Kapler went 4-for-10 in three games with Portland and was sent to Pawtucket, where he was 2-for-5 with two RBI last night.
i know it's "just the minors", but the fact that he's hitting & feeling good, well...join me in a joyful round of: Na-na-na-na. Na-na-na-na. Hey hey hey. Goo-ood bye!! for Willie Harris.

now if you will excuse me, i need to pace. Matt Clement takes the hill tonight & RSN never knows which Matty we'll be seeing...at least if he bombs, it will be to a pitcher i am somewhat partial to. ;-)

home sweet home

or should i say i am just happy to be warm again, even if it is with Tropical Storm Alberto (who i keep wanting to call Alfredo for some reason??) pouring down (much needed) rain all over the place. and even if it comes with about 94% humidity. because i hate hate HATE being cold. i hate it as much as i love the people i got to see this weekend.

and there are somewhere along the lines of 200 photos to prove it--the best of which will be gracing this very blog in the near future. =)

i miss my girls but it is always good to come back home too...

sometimes it needs to get out of your head before it eats you alive...and then you can move on again

I lose my way
And it's not too long before you point it out
I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
I'm forced to fake a smile, a laugh
Every day of my life
My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

("Because of You", Kelly Clarkson)

the sunny side of Boston pitching

who gives up 3 home runs in a game & still comes out the victor?

i cringed & made a couple of snide (from too much recent defeat) remarks to my email baseball buddy, RSN-West...and they are words i will gladly eat ANY day of the week since regardless of the runs he coughed up, Schilling became the first nine-game winner in the AL last night.

The way Joe Torre looks at is: "The mark of a good pitcher is giving up homers with the bases empty and Schilling has done that," Torre said. "He's not going to beat himself. He's not going to walk people. He nade a couple of mistakes with the splitter. That's two homers, He throws a lot of strikes. He makes you beat him." (FOX Sports)

it was good to see the Boston bats alive & well last night. 9 runs on 15 hits, including a 3-run homer by the sadly-quiet-this-season Jason Varitek.

maybe they needed that rainout to end the dry spell? =P let's just hope that they saved something for Wakey tonight. maybe he'll be in luck with the rotation all jumlbed up now after a cancelled game, a double header on tomorrow's horizon & another minor leaguer testing out the hill in the bigs. maybe. i bet *he* isn't holding his breath.

MLB.com puts it as: "The captain and all of his brigade came through, when they most had to." well in my humble-yet-ever-present opinion, they have to tonight as well. they owe Timmy at this point. even if he wants to take it in a professional manner, i continue to feel frustrated for him.

also praying that Lowell, who still isn't back to his lunging-after-balls self with that strained hamstring, isn't too tight from a pitch taken in the ribs...or that Youk's elbow is ok after a pitch nailed him right on the bone. the baseball gods think they are humorous by giving me bats & threatening to take away my lightning infield, where hit balls of opponents' bats go to die. i. am. not. laughing.

in happier, more hopeful pitching news, the Red Sox have acquired *another* pitching Papelbon in the draft. Jon's younger bro, Josh. and rumor has it, Josh has an identical twin, Jeremy, who also pitches. i wonder if this cannon for an arm is genetic? and can we get this third Papelbon? could you imgine? the Sox could have a starter, reliever & closer...yet the whole game the other team faces nothing but Papelbons. one getting tired? that's ok, bring in another. a girl has to have dreams...

tonight. Fenway. the Dougie-and-Tim show. lucky #49. i'm pulling for you Wakey...

SPF this week is brought to you by with the help of Dictionary.com

1. ap·er·ture
n.

An opening, such as a hole, gap, or slit.

A usually adjustable opening in an optical instrument, such as a camera or telescope, that limits the amount of light passing through a lens or onto a mirror.
The diameter of such an opening, often expressed as an f-number.
The diameter of the objective of a telescope.
Because I know you’re all just weirdos that read my site, your assignment isn’t going to be a hole, a gap or a slit because UPPERCASE God only knows what you’ll be showing me!

SPF ASSIGNMENT:

1. A wide open space.

2. Brightness

3. In the dark

Have fun SPFers because this is another, ‘it’s how you see it’ type of assignment. Surprise me!

1. a wide open space: not taken recently but actually one year ago. and i offer it up in honor of my trip back to CT this weekend! =)

2. brightness: so much brightness of color found in the wall murals at Pizzafari in Animal Kingdom

3. in the dark: or in the shade, creating the darkness of a silhouette against a gorgeous FL sky
