just when i tried to make my peace with it...

i read *this* on Surviving Grady:

JD Drew
Positive spin:
Should add a solid bat to the line-up. Career number are 286/393/512/905 with 30+ double and 25+ HR potential.
Negative spin: In half of his seasons as a major-leaguer, he's played in less than 110 games. He is often injured and hasn't produced the RBI numbers one would expect. And he is ofen injured.
Summary: Money aside, this deal still hinges on Manny. Hitting in the fifth spot, Drew would be a huge addition, if he has to hit third or fourth, this could be a disaster. Side note - don't let the guy wear #7, he's coming into town under fire as it is, don't add to the pressure. Finally, why is he "JD" if his name is David Jonathan?

Julio Lugo
Positive spin: Ahhh, friends with David Ortiz?
Negative spin: Lots of errors.
Summary: This reeks of player infatuation ala Edgah. I'm not buying into "needing production from the SS position" argument. If that were the case, bring back Cabrera for less money and better fielding. And cool handshakes. I guess if the Sox are paying per error, A-Gon and Lugo make the same money?

can i just have Trot & A-Gon back now? please?

let's talk chocolate

i'm kind of cranky right now (what is with my humbug attitude the last couple of days anyway??) & maybe this will help.

i love fun little holiday chocolate treats. they're no See's, mind you but they are fun nonetheless!

first of all, there is something about Reese's Peanut Butter Trees. they are the only thing i like better than the standard Cups.

and who can resist a York Peppermint Snowflake? i can't!!

and then i was introduced to these:

oh minty deliciousness. i got a fun little holiday act of kindness from Holly & it was filled with treats, including the Hershey's Mint Miniatures! they are limited edition so i will need to keep my eyes out for them & stock up when i can...

might as well make my peace with it

Here we go again: In defense of (or at least an argument for) J.D. Drew from "Feeding the Monster" has helped me feel *slightly* better about the deals the Sox made with JD Drew and Julio Lugo, but that doesn't mean that i won't still be missing Alex Gonzalez & Trot Nixon. and i'm still wishing we'd waited one more year before making Pedroia our man at 2B; Mark Loretta he is not. i guess we'll just have to hope we hold onto Manny, because at least the batting order appears a little stronger with these new acquisitions. so much for a repeat performance from the now-disassembled perfect infield...

this week in "what the hell happened in football?!"

i swear, this has been one weird season in the NFL. this week was no exception. what the hell happened?? starting with the Ravens losing to the Bengals on Thursday night. (don't even get me started on the Thursday night games being shown on the stupid ass NFL Network that nobody seems to get...) i know the Bengals weren't doing *that* poorly at 6-5 but against the 9-2 Ravens? one of the best defenses in football? and a not-to-shabby offense? i just don't get it.

follow that on Sunday with the Cardinals topping the Rams *in* St Louis; Cleveland pulling out a win against the Chiefs; and the Eagles somehow coming back to win Monday night over the Panthers... craziness. sheer insanity.

add to that the Martin Gramatica clutch kick to give the Cowboys a win over the Giants. Gramatica, whose career appeared to be over a few years ago & who is now playing for his third different team this season, who unseated one of the best kickers in the NFL (though i can't stand the guy), Mike Vander-brat.

and what about Tony Romo?! i am starting to think this guy is for real...

then we come to The Four Games That Matter:

of highest importance, the Patriots won, but it was a nailbiter. not weird. not even abnormal for this season. until you consider that they barely managed a win over the Detroit Lions. even Tom Brady said the win was ugly. who has ugly wins over the *Lions*??

and the four touchdowns? *three* of them were by Corey Dillon. not Laurence Maroney (who left the game with an undisclosed injury). not Tom Brady. but Corey Dillon, who has been rumored to be to be on the down swing.

let's just hope that Mike Vrabel (who also left the game early with an undisclosed injury) isn't going to miss any time. the defense is already depleted enough with Rodney Harrison out and Eugene Wilson & Junior Seau done for the season.

of course the Bucs lost. ::pauses for a brief happy dance:: again. not weird, right? until you look at that second photo & realize the two angriest head coaches in the NFL are shaking hands & *smiling* (even though Gruden's was a little strained). i'm much more comfortable seeing these two sporting their grinch faces.

and the weirdness that doesn't need further explanation: the Titans are victorious over the Colts thanks to a 60-yard field goal with just a few seconds left in the fourth quarter!! woohoo!!!

i love seeing a pouting Peyton. =P i wonder who he blamed this time?

the only thing that wasn't good about The Four Games That Matter was that the Packers took their third loss in a row, this time to the Jets. =( 38-10. actually, that's not a loss. that's a complete ass-kicking. wanna know what's weird about that? you would expect to see six interceptions thrown by Favre with a score like that. nope! only one. ::sigh::

i just don't get what happened this week. even the things that look like they should make sense have elements that don't. ::shakes head in bewilderment::

Holidays Around the World: Norway

Christmas is a festive time in the "Land of the Midnight Sun." on Christmas Eve, farm animals are traditionally treated to the finest oats & barley. birds are remembered during julenek, when they are offered large sheaves of grain placed high on spruce poles. After darkness, it's "lights out" as homes are illuminated only by the warm glow of candlelight.

On Christmas Day, many attend church before spending time at home with family members. On Second Christmas Day (New Year's Eve), children celebrate julbukke by dressing up in costumes & going door-to-door for goodies.

the main event for Norwegians, though, is Christmas Eve. this is when they have their special Christmas meal & exchange gifts. that night, Julenissen visits, delivering toys to the children. nisser are gnome-like creatures protect the farms, and come out during Yuletide festivities to eat, drink & play harmless tricks on people. Julenissen (literally "Christmas elf") lives in the woods & barns across the coutryside. he is the gaurdian of every family's welfare, so children leave a steaming bowl of porridge in the hayloft during the holiday period to thank him.

Holidays Around the World: Mexico

in Mexico, the storytellers were the Three Kings.

they told of beautiful candlelight processions, the sounds of children's laughter, the tale of how poinsettias are a Christmas symbol that originated in Mexico, and the sweet smells of the season that make Christmas a magical, meaningful time of community.

in Mexico, Christmas is called La Navidad & its main celebration is called Las Posadas, which means "shelter." during Las Posadas, Mexican families recreate the journey of Mary & Joseph seeking shelter in Bethlehem. for nine nights, beginning December 16, Mexican children dress up like the holy family & visit their neighbors as part of a candelight procession. beautifully carved Nacimientos (nativity scenes) are set up in different homes. the prayers & festivities begin when the procession of Mary & Joseph is welcomed in.

on January 6, the day the Three Kings arrived in Bethlehem bringing gifts to Baby Jesus, Mexican children leave their shoes on the doorsteps in a special celebration called Dia De Los Tres Reyes (Three Kings Day). When the children awaken the next moprning, they are delighted to discover wonderful toys & gifts in and around their shoes.

the legend of the poinsettia tells of a girl named Maria & her little brother Pablo. they were very poor but always looked forward to the Christmas festival. each year a large manger scene was set up in the village church. the two children loved Christmas but were always saddened because they had no money to buy presents to leave for the Baby Jesus. one Christmas Eve, Maria and Pablo set out for church to attend the service. on their way they picked some weeds growing along the roadside & decided to take them as their gift to lay at the manger. they were teased by the other children but they said nothing, knowing they had given what they could. as Maria & Pablo began placing the green plants around the manger, miraculously, the green top leaves turned into bright red petals. soon the manger was surrounded by beautiful star-like flowers: the poinsettias we use to this very day.

The Saturday Six: December 4, 2006

courtesy of Patrick's Weekender

Saturday Six - Episode 138

1. What is the last fruit or vegetable juice you drank? How long ago did you drink it?
cranberry juice. straight. unsweetened. this morning. just like i do almost every morning. promotes a healthy bladder & urinary tract. and believe me when i say this is especially important to me.

2. Which are more likely to have on hand: fresh fruit and vegetables or fresh juice?
i almost always have fresh fruits and/or veggies on hand. fresh juice? not so much. my juice is usually the pre-bottled kind you buy at the store. i don't really consider that "fresh."

3. Does a negative movie review make you less likely to see the movie? Does a positive review make you more likely to see it?
nothing makes me more or less likely to see a movie if i decide that i want to see it. if i decide i *don't* want to see it, sometimes the review of a friend (or the fact that they sit me down & start the dvd, lol) will cause me to see the movie in question.

4. Take the quiz: What gender is your brain?

Your Brain is 80% Female, 20% Male

Your brain leans female

You think with your heart, not your head

Sweet and considerate, you are a giver

But you're tough enough not to let anyone take advantage of you!

5. Which line of description in the results best describes you?
"You think with your heart, not your head."

6. The U.S. Mint has announced a plan to reintroduce one-dollar coins, this time with former presidents. Would you use one-dollar coins, or is paper still the way to go?
that depends. i already have quite a few coins to lug around. seems like more would just be heavier. and would they be significantly different from the others so that there would be no confusing them?

Friday's Feast: December 4, 2006

Feast One Hundred & Twenty

Appetizer
Have you ever flown in a helicopter?
no. the idea of flying, in general, doesn't bother me unless i overthink it. unless we hit turbulence. but the idea of being in a helicopter really freaks me out for some reason.

Soup
What color is your warmest coat or jacket?
a light creamy tan color. and it's really not that warm. i usually have to layer a sweater underneath it on the coldest days here in Florida to actually stay warm if i'm going to be outside for any length of time.

Salad
What is your favorite rainy day activity?

stay in where it's warm & dry with some candles burning & the tv on for background noise. snuggle up in the recliner with my soft blanket & play on the computer, watch tv & text with friends.

Main Course
Describe your hands.
soft. vanilla-scented. pale. long thin fingers. almost always cool to the touch. healthy nails, not too long.

Dessert
If you could eat only one nut for the rest of your life, what nut would you pick?

not a huge fan of nuts but i think i will say... cashews. i would gladly give them up all together & not feel like i was really missing out on anything though.

immersing myself in the holiday season (aka a long rambling post but i promise there are photos!)

you've noticed that i wasn't here much this weekend, maybe? well, i was a busy girl!

i finally found something i've been looking for since i moved to Florida: an LCMS church close to where i live! i went this morning for the first time & liked it well enough to go again, we'll say that much. i am a tough customer when it comes to churches. i am used to churches like the ones i attended back in Connecticut and there is just nothing like them down here. there are no enormous, ornate altars; only flat, "table-like" altars. the sanctuaries themselves all seem open & too contemporary when compared to the churches i am accustomed to, which were old & rich with history & had balconies to fill up some of that space between the floor & the high ceiling. of all the churches i've been to since my transplant to Florida, this was the closest to what i am used to. there were some differences, but nothing too difficult to deal with:

* the projection screen at the front of the church, with the order of service & all the hymns, instead of following along in the hymnal.
* the statue of Christ at the rear of the church, instead of over the alter.
* the palm trees flanking the chancel.
* the blue Paraments on the alter -- we are taught during Confirmation class that it is acceptable to use either purple or blue during the Advent season, but i've only ever seen purple, so it was just a shock to actually see blue being used.
* the Christmas tree lit with white lights and decorated with red bows & a lighted star at the top. all my life, the church Christmas tree was decorated only in white & gold and lit with spotlights, so to see a "regular" Christmas tree in church seems odd to me.

there were some things, though, that i was happy to find:

* worshippers partaking of the Eucharist knelt to do so, something i haven't seen in years.
* we stood through the opening hymn.
* we used the "trespasses" version of the Lord's Prayer, complete with "Thy," not "You."

i have just never felt "connected" to the other churches i have attended in Florida. while i don't have a connection to this one either, i am at least compelled to go back again for the Wednesday evening Advent service. time will tell...

this evening, while watching football, i worked on my Christmas cards. i have three different designs planned for this year. i got the first set completed & the second set half done.

yesterday, i spent the entire day at Epcot, enjoying "Holidays Around the World," and all the decorations in the park, as well as on the Boardwalk & in the surrounding resorts. the resorts are impressive themselves, even just as they are with all the little themed details, but in their holiday decor, they are downright amazing! each resort is festively decorated in the resort's theme, in complete Disney fashion. every tiny detail is perfect.

especially amazing were the displays in some resorts constructed entirely of gingerbread!

it isn't just the resorts though. it's the shops & pavilions all throughout Epcot as well! treats & decorations & items available for purchase...

i didn't even know that Holidays Around the World existed before this year, but it was so interesting. there are eleven countries represented in Epcot's World Showcase: Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, the United States, Japan, Morocco, France, the United Kingdom and Canada. each pavilion had a storyteller that shared the customs & traditions celebrated in that country during the holiday season. it was fascinating to hear about the celebrations. (i am going to do a separate post for each country, one per day, over the next week & a half though, because this is getting pretty long already and really, it's too interesting not to give each its own spotlight.)

i did manage to stop & enjoy a very yummy berry tart in Norway though...

i watched Mickey's Tree Lighting Treat, which was difficult to see very well because so many people were trying to fit into a very small space, but it was fun to see the tree-lighting ceremony, nonetheless.

and i finally got to see something i've been wanting to since i got my first annual Disney pass: the Candlelight Processional. each holiday season, the program takes place in the America Garden theatre. more than 400 performers fill the stage. there is a 50-piece orchestra, a candlelight choir and a celebrity narrator. the choir sings beautiful holiday songs & Chrismas carols. the narrator tells the Christmas story between songs, concluding with "One Solitary Life," followed by The Hallelujah Chorus. it was beautifully done & so worth the long line i waited in to see it.

this was weekend was perfect for getting me into the Christmas spirit.
