changing gears

the Sox have obviously decided to continue breaking my heart, even in the off season, so i am turning my attention to the Patriots. after all, here are my winter boys, barely given a cursory mention here during the first seven weeks of the season & they are quietly showing us all that you can take away every known receiver Tom Brady has thrown to in his career, give him a receiving corp stocked with names you've never heard before & he is still going to find success. my boys are 6-1 going into Sunday night against the Colts!! this team is not a fluke. and they can never be discounted. the way things are looking now, a weak division will virtually guarantee them a spot in the playoffs & the Patriots are known for improving as the season progresses. get them into the post season & i firmly believe that the only team that can beat the Patriots *is* the Patriots. (no disrespect meant to the Broncos, but don't believe me? look at the horrifically sloppy game they played to eliminate themselves in Denver last year.)

speaking of horrifically sloppy, can someone *please* tell me what the deal is with this Belichick fashion statement??

but *that* is not the team that took the field last night. nothing like an unstoppable 94-yard march down the field for a TD on the MNF opening drive to get a girl fired up for some football! i love that Tom Brady showed up at the Metrodome, a crazed deafening environment, executed the silent counts effectively, and threw for 372 yards & four touchdowns like it was just another practice session. Deion who? ;-)

now if they can just carry this momentum & level of play back to Foxboro for Sunday night. get inside Peyton's head early & take advantage of the fact that Indy has *no* run defense. how sweet would it be to ruin the Colts' undefeated record...

anyway. the game rocked. the Patriots looked like champs. Tom Brady is still The Golden Boy. and Belichick is a genius. if you didn't watch the game (or even if you did & just want to relive the victory), Chad Finn at Touching All the Bases did a live game commentary that totally cracked me up this morning. thoroughly enjoyable.

6-1. after all the criticism. ::shakes head & smiles::

disbanded

i am watching, a disheartened & powerless fan, as one by one, my boys place their name on the list of those testing free agency...

Doug Mirabelli (who filed as soon as free agency was opened) - this one is even harder to swallow since the Sox have picked up Wakefield's 2007 option & we learned the hard way what happens when anyone else tries to catch Wake's knuckler...

Trot Nixon

Gabe Kapler

Mark Loretta - this one *kills* me...

Alex Gonzalez

and i fear this list is only going to grow...

Monday Madness: October 30, 2006

brought to you by Monday Madness

Monday, October 30, 2006

This week's questions are, once again, from fellow participants! Thanks to all of you for your questions, AND for playing! Have an awesome week! =)

1. Small town or big city?

i like to be *near* a big city but i don't want to live in one. i guess it's a remnant of living in Connecticut for the first 25 years of my life. everything seemed suburban or rural. i like the peace & quiet. the grass & the trees. but a 90 minute drive put me in NYC or Boston to enjoy what the big cities had to offer.

2. Do you have a favorite childhood memory, and if so, would you share it?
i don't know tat i can actually single one memory out & call it my favorite, but one of my favorite memories is the beginning of Autumn. my dad would start buying apple cider & warming it on the stove with cinnamon sticks. he would buy apple-filled cinnamon donuts from Dunkin Donuts. mmmmm... the best Autumn evening snack...

3. How do you calm down when something has really upset and/or angered you? Do you swallow it? Call a friend and rant? Go in the bathroom and cry? Punch a wall? Walk around muttering to yourself, complete with scary hand gestures?
well... those are two very different scenarios for me. seems like lots of things upset me lately, but very little actually makes me angry. when i get angry, i tend to walk it off. i try to cool my temper a bit, count to ten, get a bit of distance. i have an almost eternally long fuse. you have to really work hard to actually make me *angry*. if i don't have the opportunity to regroup alone, i will get more & more wound up, which just makes me cry & it makes me even more mad when i cry... when i get upset though, i tend to get more & more quiet. sometimes i will isolate & internalize. sometimes i will write. sometimes i will seek someone out to get some release...

4. What attracts you to memes?
i like that they get me to delve into myself & reflect on aspects of who i am that might otherwise go ignored.

5. How reliant are you on computers to get through your day?
::eyes widen:: i can survive without one... but i would rather not...

6. In a crisis, are you calm or do you panic?
i tend to remain pretty level-headed. four years in daycare with infants & you learn to remain as cool & efficient as you can be when it comes to a crisis. it's much to hard to be proactive in resolving it when you are unfocused by a state of panic.

This week, 5 more questions from our fellow participants! Thank you all for playing, AND for offering suggestions. Have a fabulous week! =)

1. Dramas or comedies?
i like a healthy dose of both. there's nothing like a good laugh, but i do like getting wrapped up in a good drama.

2. Your neighbor has frequent noisy parties on nights before you need to get up early. Do you confront him directly, call the police, call your landlord, join in the debauchery, or seethe quietly and do nothing?
i hate to rock the boat. i would probably seethe quietly for as long as i could take it. if it went on to the point of no longer being able to tolerate it, i would have to call the landlord to handle the confrontation, unless things escalated out of hand rapidly, in which case i would have to call in the police.

3. Are you more comfortable in big crowds or small groups?
as long as i don't have to address said big crowd, i am perfectly comfortable maneuvering myself in one. sometimes i like the way you can get lost inside the mass of people. and the opportunities to listen & observe without constantly being expected to contribute. that being said, i love small groups of people, especially people i know well. there's little quite as satisfying as spending time in a small group of people whose company you enjoy. i lose a bit of comfort factor in a small group of i don't already know at least one other person; i am slower to warm up, so having someone i know well alongside tends to break the ice for me enough to get my bearings.

4. Do you prefer Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox?
for almost everything, i prefer Internet Explorer. i am familiar with its features. when it comes to uploading photos to Blogger though, Firefox seems to be a much more effective browser.

5. They say you learn something new every day. What new thing did you learn today?
nothing earth-shattering: Outlook does not offer you a "shrink to fit page" option for printing email.

realize

And coming here has made me come to this:
The one thing I can't get back is the one thing I miss.

It was breakin' rules, flyin' blind;
What you see through younger eyes;
It wasn't what I thought it was,
Man, I swore he was the one.
And then I miss those days,
But comin' back to this place,
I realize it ain't him I miss,
It's that young girl, wide-eyed, first love, one time innocence.

more winter Sox

fragments... all that remain until February are little bitty fragments...

"Guy was like Red Bull in human form, slapping ass and rallying the troops and installing himself as the team's somewhat demented General Patton. He pulled double time as the team's official mascot [Karaoke Guy], gave himself the second greatest nickname in Boston sports history, and provided much-needed comic relief whenever our world came crashing down around us." (Surviving Grady: Gone But Not Forgotten) -- anyone else miss Kevin Millar now too...?

"In his last three years, he has hit .324 with 20 HR's and 66 RBI - just at Fenway Park. This season he hit .355 at home." (Surviving Grady: I See, In 2007...) -- we so often lament Manny being Manny, but i have to tell you, for better or for worse, i'll take the rest of Manny when it comes packaged with numbers like these.

"...the Pinstriped Gestapo..." (Keep Your Sox On In Brooklyn) -- i don't know. this just makes me laugh.

letting go

sometimes you stand on the threshold of change... that pivotal moment when you are standing precariously close to the edge, about to let go of "what was" & fall into the unknown of "what will be"... but before you do, you turn around & look back at where you came from.

you look behind you & see things from an entirely different perspective & wonder how you could have led yourself so far from reality. you see with a new clarity... and you wish you had been awarded that clarity before you accomplished making such a great big mess of the road winding backward from where you now stand.

you stare as far back into the past as you can see. back to that place along the horizon where the land & the sky meet in a tiny pinpoint... and you see that things you thought were good or worth having were nothing more than illusions you created for yourself. things you dressed up to hide their ugliness. things you told yourself were so much more than they ever could have hoped to be. things you clung to that turned to dust in your hands because they were never what they pretended they were. and you realize that you knew this all along but held onto them anyway, like cheap plastic toys from vending machines, that you, in childlike foolishness, thought were somehow valuable if you tried hard enough to believe that they were.

you look into the past & see nothing but a vast emptiness, clouded only by wisps of smoke as they rise from the remains of what you thought were, at the very least, memories worth tucking away.

something in you clenches & twists, wanting to finally release that which never should have held your attention at all, things you held onto for reasons that are no longer clear... and you take the tiny pieces that are left. you hold them in your hands like so many grains of sand. you look at them for a few moments, wondering why you thought you could fool yourself into believing they were ever something you wanted. then, one by one, you let them slip through your fingers, falling away from you & being carried on the wind to be mixed with all the other grains of sand that exist, indiscernible, unremarkable, meaningless, hardly worth even the tiny space they occupy in the great scheme of things.

you watch them fall away & suddenly your hands are empty. they are clean & open to new possibilty, no longer dusty from the past, ready to finally hold a treasure of infinite value. and instead of looking at the ruins that lay behind you, you turn your gaze forward again...

to promise. to hope. to beauty too precious to even envision.

and all at once...

you let go...

and fall...

realizing that the past is forever gone from your view...

that you have carried none of it with you...

and you wonder what will be there when you land...

winter in RSN

to quote someone very wise, i can talk about this now that the Yankees have been eliminated. the most important parts of baseball are, of course, Red Sox wins followed by Yankees losses. and when they happen simultaneously... ::shiver::

ah, but we have some time before we'll be *there* again... because now it's "winter". now is when we sit here & suck up every little mundane bit of Red Sox information we can get our hands on. rumors. contract negotiations. what will hopefully prove to be wise strategical moves that will send Boston back to glory a year from now...

i was stunned to see Papa Jack & Dave Wallace named scape goats for the debaucle that 2006 finally became... but when a team with the payroll of the Red Sox can't get past the All Star break without struggling & suffers a downward spiral like they did for the last six weeks of the season, heads will inevitably roll. (sometimes i wonder though, just for a moment, if maybe it shouldn't be a *lumpy* head that rolls... or maybe that of Boy Wonder, who can't seem to gather all the pieces to make a dominating pitching staff...)

at least this little quote from none other than Peter Gammons makes me feel kind of good about the latest Tito-inspired coaching acquistion: "I'm not big on coaches changing teams, but Boston's hiring of John Farrell as pitching coach is one of those moves that could change the franchise. Farrell eventually will be a general manager, somewhere, and the Red Sox's 2007 season will depend greatly on the development of Josh Beckett, Jonathan Papelbon, Craig Hansen, Manny Delcarmen, Edgar Martinez and, in time, Clay Buchholz, Kris Johnson, Bryce Cox, Justin Masterson and others. In the last eight months, Boston has raided the Cleveland developmental organization for Farrell and farm director Mike Hazen." intersting. very interesting...

anyone who is truly a Red Sox fan, though, is waiting, whether they admit it or not, for the verdict on Trot. even if his numbers haven't been as strong as they had been... even if he spent a little time on the DL (again), he is an institution in Fenway's tricky right field. and he comes out & *plays*. i can't imagine a Sox roster without him & watching him receive a standing ovation as he came off the field a couple of weeks ago... i think Gabe Kapler said it best: "He's a loyal, deep, strong human being that I have a tremendous respect for. It was hard to watch without getting emotional, him walking off the field today, for no other reason than he deserves to be recognized, not because he is or is not coming back to Boston but because he means a whole lot to a lot of people."

someone *did* get a contract signed though & to be honest, i think i have some mixed feelings about this... of course there is the consolation that whatever Boy Wonder ::eye roll:: did or didn't do, he doesn't have *this* stigma hanging over his head: Just some quick math. The Marlins $15M payroll bought them 162 games. The MFY $200M payroll bought them 166 games. That’s $46M a playoff game. (Dirty Watah) now if i could just get over having given up Anibel Sanchez... although i *am* thrilled with having one hell of a Mike Lowell...

::sigh::
football season or not, i miss my boys. let the baseball winter musings commence...

i wonder what it means...

...when the dream you have right before waking consists of being at a party -- you know, one of those "girl parties", like Pampered Chef or Tupperware or what have you. there were all these women there that i had known at some point in my life or another. some since early elementary school even. people i haven't though about in *years*. one name that comes to mind is Jessica Minor. anyway. all these women were sitting around chatting & eating ice cream -- the refreshments for the party were "ice cream social". while they were enjoying themselves, i was running around like a lunatic, checking the ice cream. because people weren't putting the right lids back on the containers. =P it wasn't even my house!! but that was what i spent the party doing was freaking out over the fact that the wrong lids were on the ice cream.

come to think of it... this is not the first time that i have recently dreamt about people i haven't so much as thought of in about 20 years. i had a dream about a girl i haven't seen since fourth grade -- Jill Ginter -- just a couple of weeks ago. hmmmmm...

::Payin' the bills::

Onesome: Payin'-- Hey, 'they' tell us fuel prices are down! What are you payin' this week for a gallon of gas?
$2.07! ok. just realized that i am *excited* about paying more than $2 a gallon. sad.

Twosome: the-- heck you say! There's an election coming up here in the US; do you plan to vote? No, no need for your soapbox. ...unless you want to .
yes. time for a new Governor. have to make sure we can get someone who will be just as fashion-conscious as good ol' Jeb during hurricane season. oh... i mean... ummmm... right.

Threesome: Bills-- Which bill(s) do you absolutely dislike paying? ...and by that I mean the one you "have to-have to" but wish you didn't have to. Tuition/books? Power? The newspaper?
car insurance. it is freaking highway robbery in this state. actually *all* insurance is. between uninsiured *ahem* "migrant citrus workers" & all the snowbirds & no freaking regulations at *all*... i pay about four times more for most insurance than i did in CT! cheaper cost of living in FL, my ass!

let's climb into the time machine...

...take a little trip back in time with this survey that Heather sent to me yesterday. (hmmmm... why do i feel the need to make sure my crystals are in place...? heh. i digress.)

shall we?

Fill this out about your SENIOR year of high school! The longer ago it was, the more fun the answers will be!

1. Who was your best friend(s)?
well there's Chele, Brian, Shannon... and... ::whispers:: Angela...

2. What sports did you play?
none if i could help it. =P just what they forced on me in phys ed.

3. What kind of car did you drive?
i didn't drive. i got chauffered. hee hee...

4. On Friday night, where were you?
at the football games with the marching band. that ended on Thanksgiving though. after that? ummmm... probably driving around with Brian... or at the movies with whomever... or at some kind of rehearsel for Drama... or at some school-related event. OMG... Chele... remember the senior auction?? LOL!!

5. Were you a party animal?
nope. not even close.

6. Were you considered a flirt?
a flirt?? i barely talked at all during most of high school. i finally started to come out of my shell during senior year but i don't think i was a flirt.

7. Ever skip school?
no. even on Senior Skip Day -- Chele & i actually had permission not to be there! LOL!

8. Were you a nerd?
a little but only because i got good grades. i was also a music department geek. but i got along with everyone pretty well. if *I* felt like it.

9. Were you in any clubs?
i was very involved with the music department, which included the Drama Club. that's about it. took up all my time anyway.

10. Suspended?
never. i never got into trouble for anything. ultimate good girl. lots of respect for authority. that & i hated when my father looked at me sadly & said "i am very disappointed in you." i still don't do well when someone says that to me...

11. Can you sing the fight song?
oh man... March on for Central High lalalalalalala... LOL! great. i don't remember the words but the tune is going to be stuck in my head forever now. (Heather: bet you're glad you can't hear this one huh? something else i should hum for you so you don't feel left out??)

12. Who was your favorite teacher?
if this was about *junior* year, i would be able to use my all-time favorite teacher for this answer but... anyway. ummmm... Dr. Powers, i think. i had her for Advanced Vocab (ok fine. so maybe i was more of a nerd than i choose to remember LOL!) & she was *hysterical*. took pictures of Eric Swift sleeping through her class everyday & posted them on her wall. and of course, whatever happened later, Jim Tardif was the best band director we had while i was in high school...

13. Favorite class?
i crammed all my credits into the first three years of high school so that i could skate through senior year & enjoy easy classes. i only had three classes senior year! English. French. Advanced Vocab (first half of the year)/Phys Ed (second half of the year). and Band. i spent the rest of the day in "study hall" in the music department offices... lol... "studying"...

14. What was your school's full name?
Bristol Central High School

15. School mascot?
the ram

16. Did you go to dances?
i went to some before my senior year but i think senior year itself, i went to maybe part of one at the beginning of the year. and the prom.

17. If you could go back and do it over, would you?
i wouldn't change anything really about the way it happened... or at least how i remember it, but NO THANK YOU to the idea of going back & doing it again for *any* reason!

18. What do you remember most about graduation?
it was hot. and we were all trying to keep Shannon from crying.

19. Favorite memory of Senior year?
Pippin. hands down.

20. Were you ever posted on the senior wall?
the what??

21. Where did you go most often for lunch?
it was splt 50-50. if i was buying lunch, the senior cafe. if i brought it with me, i just stayed in the music department.

22. What did you do after graduation?
i can't remember! but i know it didn't involve the graduation party that the school hosted!

23. When did you graduate?
1994

24. Where are most of your classmates?
other than the ones i have stayed in contact with... which would be Chele & Brian... i have *no* freaking clue. i hear through the grapevine that many of them are still in Bristol, not doing much.

25. Who will resend this first?
well i didn't really send it. maybe someone will see it & decide to blog it themselves though. i don't know.

26. Is there anyone you wish you were closer to then?
no, not really. i was close to the people i wanted to be. there are some ::coughcoughPattyBerniercoughcough:: that would have liked to *not* be so close to!

27. Is there anyone you lost touch with, you wish you hadn't?
maybe a couple of people. but i have reconnected with the important ones. =)

28. If you could change one thing from your senior year, what would it be?
oh boy... let's not go here... i'm going to just say "nothing" but... maybe there's *one* thing... i never thought i would say i wanted to change something but... i think a little differently now than i have in the past about changing things...

29. What was a major event happening in the world during your senior year?
i don't know about the *world* but in the U.S. i remember that Kurt Cobain was found dead, former President Nixon passed away, Tonya Harding had Nancy Kerrigan beaten in the leg during the Winter Olympics & the Buffalo Bills lost the Super Bowl *again*. (sorry, Sue...)

30. What do you think changed the most about you since high school?
O. M. G. what *hasn't* changed?? i don't look the same. i don't act the same. i don't live in CT anymore. i underwent almost a complete metamorphosis between high school & adulthood.

Friday Fun: October 18, 2006

courtesy of Friday Fun

for lack of anything to ramble out, i think i will dig into the stash of old meme material i've been hoarding for a while... yes, i am aware that it is not Friday. i am fervently wishing that it would be & there we are...

Friday Friends

1. Do you have regular get togethers with your friends? What is your favorite thing to do with your friends?
define "regular" lol... Alison comes down once a year. Heather comes down once a year. i go back to CT once a year...
2. Do you think men & women can truly be just friends?
sure they can.
3. Do you have a “best friend”?
yes, i do. the best one ever... could not live without...
4. What are the 3 must have qualities for a friend to possess?
want me to be happy even if they do not necessarily agree with my decisions. allow me to be there for them as much as they are for me. be able to *laugh*.
5. What are the deal breaker qualities that will cause you to not be friends?
self-centeredness. back-stabbing. be "a Thing".

Friday Foolishness

1. How patient are you with the foolishness of others?
well that depends. who is being foolish? and what kind of foolishness are we talking about? if it is someone i love & they are saying something foolish (like for example: thinking that they cannot talk to me about what's bothering them because i will be annoyed or don't have time), then i have all the patience in the world to make them feel loved & secure. *but* if it is just someone not paying attention or goofing off when they need to be serious & get the job done, my patience dwindles rapidly. do not waste my time with inefficiency, ignorance & immaturity for very long!
2. Do you find pettiness to be mildly annoying or does it make you want to slap some sense into people?
i think we waste too much time on being petty. there are bigger issues to devote our time & energy to. sure. we all have our petty moments, but when they become the rule & not the exception, it really makes me want to slap some heads.
3. Do you know people that so much like to be the center of everything that they will make something out of nothing?
YES. thankfully, i determined their toxicity & have ceased associating with them. =P

Five Fridays

Name 5 favorite…

1. TV shows?
Friends. Boston Legal. Grey's Anatomy. Sex & the City. PTI.
2. foods?
mashed potatoes & gravy. honey balsamic chicken. ice cream. Italian pasta salad. virtually *anything* on the buffet at Biergarten.
3. things to do?
email with some very special people. go to Disney World. play with my camera. go to California. watch the Red Sox.
4. online stores?
ummmmm... i can't tell you the last time i shopped at all, online or otherwise.
5. online haunts?
Blogger. a whole pile of blogs i frequent using Bloglines. RedSox.com. Fox Sports. and i almost always have my Gmail open.

Fridays Past

1. When you were a kid heading to school, what did you most look forward to?
being able to see the friends i didn't get to see over summer vacation.
2. What was your favorite subject?
anything related to English or vocabulary or spelling. i also started liking history when i got older.
3. Who was your favorite teacher and why?
Ms Norton. junior year English. she spoke her mind & said the most un-PC things to us. she was hysterical. unconventional. maybe insane. but *effective*. man, did we learn in that class.
4. What did you like the least about school?
MATH. and assigned reading.

Friday Favorites

We are music-themed this week!!

1. When you are having a slow morning, is there a particular song that gets you going?

no, not really. as much as i love music, i don't think i have anything that really makes me get up & move.
2. What is your favorite kind of music?
no one particular kind. i like all sorts of music. it's all about lyrics first & sound second. it just has to make a connection with me.
3. What is the last song you heard?
"Far Away", Nickelback
4. Do you and your significant other have A Song? What is it and why?
::coughcough::
5. Do certain songs bring back memories for you? Give us an example!!
sure! one example: "There's More to Me Than You", Jessica Andrews. i'll let the words speak for themselves...

I spent years and all this time
Thinking I was better off 'cause you were mine
You always said it was your way or the highway
So I'm shiftin my life into drive
I'm getting out, kissing the past good-bye
Like Toby said, "How do you like me now?"
This conversation has run dry
And I keep telling myself

There's more to me than you
Don't underestimate what I can do
Well I'm alright, it's okay
I know I'll make it through
'Cause there's more to me than you

I'm not saying I'm battered and bruised
But I might as well be with the words you used
I believe in myself, that makes me stronger
Things changed and so have I
I'm gonna make hay while the sun still shines
You can clip my wings, but I'm still gonna fly
I'm on my own and on my way
And I keep telling myself

There's more to me than you
Don't underestimate what I can do
Well I'm alright, it's okay
I know I'll make it through
'Cause there's more to me than you

There was always something that meant more to you than me
And I'm just sorry it's taking this for you to see

There's more to me than you
Don't underestimate what I can do
Well I'm alright, it's okay
I know I'll make it through
'Cause there's more to me than you
There's more to me than you

Wednesday Mind Hump: October 18, 2006

brought to you by Blogdrive Insanity

Greetings! Ready for another mind hump?
Today is Long Distance Day.

1. What's the longest distance you've ever traveled?
for about 15 years, it was the 1400-mile trip that i made to New Orleans for the LCMS National Youth Gathering until about four weeks ago when i flew 2500 miles to California to visit Nichole & Daniel.

2. What's the longest distance you've ever walked?
it was between 10 & 11 miles. i walked home from work once when i was 20. i didn't feel good, i didn't have the car that day & i couldn't reach anyone so i set out on foot. that's a long ass walk when you have a fever & a splitting, throbbing headache & it turns out you also have a raging sinus infection which is what caused the fever & the headache in the first place. no wisecracks about me leaving work "just" for that: i took care of 16 babies. 16 babies + an enormous headache that makes you feel like your skull is going to crack wide open every time you bend over or someone so much as whispers = absolute hell. for as long & miserable as that walk was, it was better than staying at work.

3. How far away is the friend/relative who lives the longest distance from you?
i refer you to question #1.

3) What is the last thing you wrote down? a website & some information from my boss's wife that i need to pass along to our Accounting Manager.

4) What is the last favor you did for someone else? delivered some paperwork & envelope from someone in another building to someone who works in the main office.

5) What is your favorite TV show? ooohhhhhh... tough call. i love Boston Legal, but Nichole has me totally hooked on Grey's Anatomy now. favorite show of all time though would still have to be Friends.

Forward Friday

1. What are you going to be doing this weekend? harassing the cutest two year old ever with my camera
2. Do you tend to plan ahead or live for the moment? while there is a time & place for both extremes, i tend to live the majority of my life somewhere in the middle: make tenative plans with enough flexibility built in to play things by ear.
3. Do you live by your calendar or are you techno-savvy with high tech organizers? If so, which one do you use? mostly my calendar. especially at work where my desk calendar is sacred. i also use the reminder feature in Outlook for extremely time sensitive tasks.
4. Where do you see yourself in a year? In 5 years? a year from now, i hope to be concluding my first year as a thirty-something in a warm climate of some sort. five years is a little harder for me to project (especially after what you have learned about me in question two!), but i will speculate & say: i hope i will be completely in love & maybe have a child... we'll see. check back with me in five years. ;-)

Friday Fill-in: October 6, 2006

brought to you by Divine Reality

again with a little bit of catching up...

October 6th

My favorite thing about autumn is... the beginning of football season, now that i don't have crisp weather & fall foliage.

I'm currently reading... nothing. i just finished "Where Are the Children?" by Mary Higgins Clark. i am always taking suggestions for good reads though!

The last time I bought a purse... was about four months ago. i don't have a variety to choose from. i keep one at a time so it needs to be versatile. the last one was black. the new one is brown leather.

I hear... the light on the fishtank buzzing; my own typing; trucks & forklifts; and a business-related conversation between Rich & Phil.

Last night... i watched Grey's Anatomy...

This weekend... i will be at Disney World quite a bit with Heather & Baby Girl!

September 29th

When I'm sick I need... to sleep sitting propped up so it doesn't turn into pneumonia.

I like... tomato & fresh basil ...on my pizza.

I just bought... the softest blanket ever!

If I had more time I would... probably go crazy. more time is not on my list of needs at the moment.

If I were in charge of the world... someone would have to create a teleporter as the very first order of business.

This weekend I'm gonna... sample a wine or two, and see if it tastes or smells like something other than wine. ;-)

September 22nd

6 things in front of me right now... computer. telephone. cell phone. sunglasses. candy dish. bottle of water.

5 things I'm good at... listening. organizing. being cheerful. playing things by ear. being understanding.

4 things I can't live without... loving those most important to me. email. Verizon IN texting. my camera.

3 things I'm wearing right now... my new sneakers. levis. a burgundy v-neck t-shirt.

2 things I ate yesterday... kielbasa. yogurt.

1 thing I'm doing this weekend... watching fireworks.

more catching up on memes...

::Name that Tune::

Onesome: Name-- Ah, what about names? How did your blog name come to be? Is there a story there?

there sure is. i don't know that it is captivating reading, but i blogged about it a while back.

Twosome: that-- and this. We've all thought about a change of locations from time to time: is there any place you'd like to try living for a while? (You can go back home when you're done with the tryout .)
::mysterious smile::

Threesome: Tune-- us into what you're listening to lately. ...anything on your radar we should be aware of?
i've been listening to what's in my playlist; Lionel Richie: The Definitive Collection; whatever happens to be on the radio that sounds good as i scan stations; and Nichole has me really wanting to check out new Evanescence.

::How High is Up?::

Onesome: How-- many Apples in your orchard? Didn't we just ask this one? Are you a Mac-o-phile, a Windows user, or one of those penguin people (Linux users)?
Windows. there is something about familiarity. and there are still so many things i use on a regular basis that are not mac-friendly.

Twosome: High is-- what in height for your family? Are you a tall group? ...a short stack? ...or a mixed lot?
we're quite a mixed lot. i am one of the tallest women in my family though!

Threesome: Up-- ...and down and all around: Labor Day marked the end of Summer for those of us in the US (regardless of how the plants felt what with the temperatures out West and hurricanes in the East). How about you: what signals the change of seasons this time of year for you?
now that i don't have apple orchards, fall foliage & crisp weather: cooler weather (hey, everything is relative). exodus of the toursists. influx of snowbirds. MLB playoffs. NFL kicks off.

::Common Household Products::

Onesome: Common-- Quick and easy: the most common name you can think of! Okay, let's make it a first (given) name...

first name that pops into mind is Mike/Michael. in a company of 40 people, we have seven!

Twosome: Household-- cleaners? What is your "go to" cleanser when you have to clean the place up? Are you a Lysol Junkie, an Orange Blossom Special or maybe a Bleach it to Death type? Come on, come clean !
Windex & a roll of paper towels. Clorox wipes. Lysol.

Threesome: Products-- come and products go. What's on your list as a "wanna' have" for this Fall (no, not for Christmas; we'll save that for later).
nothing major: some Autumn-scented candles. a new pair of jeans. and some new long sleeve shirts.

Friday's Feast: October 4, 2006

(catching up...again...)

Feast One Hundred & Twelve

Appetizer
Measured in minutes or hours, how much exercise have you had in the last week?

actual *purposeful* exercise? about 90 minutes. (yes, i *know*, Nichole, but i am not 30 *yet*!) the rest is more...implied...and is all the running around i do. seriously. upstairs. downstairs. one building to another. back & forth between offices. all day long. and then i can't even tell you how many weekends are spent walking & walking & walking around some area of Disney World!

Soup
If you had to change your blog title to something else, what would it be?
are you kidding me?? i had a hard enough time coming up with the one i have!

Salad
Name one television show you watched when you were 9-12 years old.
Full House

Main Course
If someone gave you $50 to spend with the one condition that it had to be educational, what would you purchase?

books of some sort. what exactly, i don't know, since i don't usually go with a list in hand. i tend to browse & see what captures my attention.

Dessert
Do you tend to prefer dark colors, neutral shades, or lighter/pastel hues?

darker "jewel tone" colors , usually accented by neutrals

Feast One Hundred & Thirteen

Appetizer
What is your favorite herb or spice?
mmmmm... basil. the way it tastes *and* smells...

Soup
Name a song you like but haven't heard in a long time.

"Smooth" by Santana, featuring Rob Thomas

Salad
If you were to take just one minute to write down as many things as you can think of that you need (not want) to do, approximately how many things would there be?
well...that depends. really only 3 or 4 if you want just overall general items on a master "needs to be done" list...all of which can always be broken down into more individual line items on sub-lists...

Main Course
Tell something interesting about one of your family members (nothing scandalous, please, just something unique).

my brother is married to a published author

Dessert
What's the latest you've ever stayed awake?

i think this should say "longest" because the *latest* for me would actually be classified as early, as in the sun has long since been up! i can't remember exactly how long but close to 48 hours! you can see how useful i was, mentally, by that point, because i really don't remember how long i was really awake before my body simply decided it had had enough & was napping now, thank you very much.

Wednesday Mind Hump: October 4, 2006

brought to you by Blogdrive Insanity

Greetings, humpers! Today is Visit Your Cousin In Prison Day. Yikes!

I need some new questions. Should I do Halloween-themed questions? No, too early for that. I suppose we'll do a "this or that" format this week.

Apple pie or pumpkin pie?
apple please. my Gram made the *best* apple pie i have ever tasted... and i've never been able to find one that even comes close...
Cars or SUVs? ummmm... Nissan please. ;-) other than that? don't care. (just not the XTerra or the Murano)
Pen or pencil? depends. normally pen, unless you mean in my address book or my checkbook!
Electric guitar or acoustic guitar? acoustic
Shower or bath? 99% of the time a shower... although a bath has its time & place...
Daffy Duck or Yogi Bear? Daffy Duck!
Butter on a biscuit or jam on a biscuit? butter, please.
Bringing sexy back or dropping it like it's hot? oh, bring it back, as long as it is done tastefully, with class & elegance. sexy does not & should not be synonymous with trampy.

The rules are, there are no rules!!! All you need to do is copy and paste the above questions into your blog and add your responses. After you've finished, return here and leave us a comment so we'll know you've humped. Be sure your hump is linked back to http://bdinsanity.blogdrive.com so others can hump too.

Remember, there are no right or wrong answers. If one of the questions doesn't inspire you then simply "pass" it. Just use your imagination!

long live whichever team knocks the Yankees out of the playoffs!

so. i was getting ready for work this morning & had ESPN on for some background noise. just as i was about to shut it off, they played a commercial promoting the MLB playoffs, which start today. it zeroed in on a dejected Red Sox fan. and then it proceeded to encourage everyone whose team did not make the post season not to abandon hope. because now is when we all band together & root for the Yankees to lose. (or such was the gist. remember, i still wasn't entirely coherent enough to retain this information word for word, but the point was *not* lost on me!)

heh.

so much for being "America's team" huh? even ESPN (though they have some vendetta against the Red Sox and also got in a shot at reminding RSN that we are *not* enjoying playoff baseball in 2006) is soliciting an anti-Yankee rally among the fans of MLB. whether they are genuine in their ill-wishes for NY or not, no advertising campaign, not even the ones that make Peyton Manning look like an even bigger doofus than he manages to do on his own, has ever sounded sweeter in my ears.

here's a thought

the Colts are so great.

the Colts win so many games every season.

the Colts are already a playoff caliber team.

blah. blah. blah. blah. *blah*.

i have to say. maybe the rest of the teams in the NFL would have similar accomplishments if *they* were guaranteed to play two games every season against both the Titans & the Texans. out of a 17-week season, with every team getting one week off & playing all the teams in their division twice, that is essentially four wins handed to the Colts every year, barring something outrageous happening. must be nice to have a quarter of your season all but secured before you even get started.

just sayin'...

brought to you by Patrick's Weekender

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name your favorite sports teams, and for the less sports-educated, be sure to indicate the sport with which they're associated.

1. Boston Red Sox (baseball) - born & raised in CT, where you are either a Boston sports fan or a NY sports fan. i am *not* a NY sports fan.

2. New England Patriots (football) - i am going to clarify that i am by no means a bandwagon fan that jumped on board when these first two teams won championships! i love my first two teams, win or lose--though there are some members of both i find particularly disposable...

3. Green Bay Packers (football) - let me be more specific. i am actually a Brett Favre fan. he is my very favorite quarterback, possibly of all time. i love his fire & enthusiasm & the passion he brings to the game. i don't know how i will feel about the Packers once he is gone...

4. Anaheim Angels (baseball) - if you add the Los Angeles to that, you are hereby asked to remove yourself from my blog. no, seriously. don't get me started. by default, i am an Angels fan. i think that someone...or some two...may be slowly brainwashing me here...

5. Hoston Astros (baseball) - for some reason this has just always been my favorite National League team. although, at the rate the Red Sox ship players back & forth to San Diego, the Padres could take over that role. half the team they have now are former Sox! and two of my current favorite Sox played for the Padres! hmmm... another California team. i think there are a couple of people with some explaining to do...

6. Carolina Panthers (football) - favorite NFC team, not sure why, other than the fact that their quarterback, Jake Delhomme, has a style much like Brett Favre. i like tough quarterbacks who play like they love the game & come out onto the field fired up.

7. any team that can prevent the New York Yankees (baseball), the Tampa Bay Bucs (football), or the Indianapolis Colts/Peyton Manning (football) from winning a championship!!

1. From amanda f:
What do you do when somebody complements you?
a. Smile and say Thanks
b. Ignore it and change the subject
c. Complement them back
d. Turn red in embarrasment at the attention and look around to see other people's reaction
e. Take it as your due!

somewhere between a & d, depending on the situation, the compliment & the giver.

2. From shelly:

3. From kia:
What do you like most about yourself?

the fact that i am very low maintenance

4. From julie:
How do you spend Christmas?

since moving to FL, it's pretty quiet. not too many places to go or people to see. i usually go to a candlelight service on Christmas Eve...and...that's about it.

5. From wide imagination:
When do you normally blog? Day or night?

whenever the urge strikes me!

6. From rach:
What song can you relate to your personal life? Share a line or two of that song.

What is your ideal time to go to sleep at night?
